Hey Dr, really appreciate that you repeat your doubts in multiple ways “I’m not sure that is the case... it could happen but it’s highly unlikely” - You’re an expert, and a skeptic too. That feels rigorous and good for those background listening.

Took me 1 month to figure it out why my skin was so red after starting using that lotion. Later on I used a serum with 5% niacinamide and the same thing happened. I’m not sure if it is the niacinamide or other ingredient, because I used other products with niacinamide and my skin stayed normal.

    Dr. Dray,
Thank you for your transparency, I appreciate it. You take the time to educate us not just talk at us.
The time you take to provide information that is thorough and unbiased is invaluable.
The kind of advice/information you provide is something you usually have to get a referral for then wait months for an appointment.
In the U.S. you may need private insurance to see a highly competent physician? I’m not sure.
Luckily in Canada everyone has access to quantity health care.
I’m both amazed and grateful that you take the time to make these videos.

@@ehiedusi6461 depends on the color bae :) if the tiny bumps are the color of your skin, that may be texture you're just noticing, will probably go away. feel your cheek, read your skin, listen to it and what it wants you to do. maybe you have dry skin or irritation because you're using too much! if you've only been using it for a couple weeks, your skin may simply be getting used to it almost like what it does with retinol, etc. introducing new actives is hard, so remember to be patient and stay consistent :) i know this is a product that everyone loves, so try using less of it possibly and remember to moisturize/wear spf. your skin should start improving !! always remember to talk to a derm if the problem persists, maybe see if it's clashing with any of your other products, etc. you really can have too much of a good thing, so remember, use less!!!

Recently I started Dupixent, and the hype around it was true, my eczema has basically all cleared! Now I can focus on strengthening my skin barrier again, and focus on the more aesthetic parts of my skincare like dark spots, and preventing signs of aging lol. Also, now that my eczema has cleared so much I can comfortably use my Retin-A Micro again!

As a sensitive redhead, I love Vanicream, Aveeno, and CeraVe products and have used them for years at the recommendation of my dermatologist. I plan on trying some of these other product lines. I have been able to use CeraVe Daily Moisturizer Lotion and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash for my daily routine. I use CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for my face which does not have niacinamide listed. It is recommended for eczema patients. It does have hyaluronic acid in it.

I have mature combination skin that is prone to redness and irritation. I just started using the 10% Niacinamide from The Ordinary recently and feared the reactions others report, and I did feel irritated after my first use. I changed up my usage steps after watching another video and have had no problems and have seen improvement in my redness and irritation. The key is to use a moisturizing gentle wash like CeraVe, use hyaluronic acid first, then use only 2-3 drops of Niacinamide for the whole face. I follow with a good gentle, unscented moisturizer.

This is so interesting to hear you talk about this and read everyone’s experiences in the comments. I had no idea about the prevalence of these reactions! I use the ordinary 10% and it transformed my skin. I’m talking overnight my active breakouts hurt less and my rosacea flushing is basically gone now. I can even use this twice a day. Dr Dray, do you think it’s bc of my skin condition maybe that I tolerate this so well, when others who don’t have rosacea do not? I find I actually need it in serum form and the 10% was actually the game changer. The 5% in Elta UV Clear even did nothing compared to this. It has to be bc of that inherent barrier defect of the rosacea right? That since I need that repair I don’t have the reactions? So mind boggling. The human body and how people are different is such a fascinating thing.

Skincare has come a long way, there is no excuse for brands that have been around since I started my routine early teens, putting so much crap in their products making me think I had sensitive skin. Also a lot has been down to user error on my part, redness around my nose was because I put cleanser on my dry skin left it on, showered and SCRUBBED it off with a wash cloth burning and irritating my skin. I have learned so much here.

Thank you so much for this video. It is a blessing for anyone still unsure on how to use and at what percentages. I wish I had this info a few months back when I had my first niacinamide experience with the Ordinary + Zinc serum. Needless to say, it burned my cheeks like crazy and small little white bumps formed on my chin. It took weeks to clear up. I wasn't using any other product except face wash (which I'd used for years) and a basic moisturizer. I tossed the serum, rather incorporating 2% niacinamide in my new moisturizer. My skin is much better now. Happy Friday🎉

    Thank you for this video.
It makes so much sense. I ended up at an esthetician's office because I used CeraVe sunscreen with reapplication, for two days, and my skin became very, VERY dry and inflamed.
I couldn't figure out WHAT caused it. I figured it was a cleanser I was using.
No, the CeraVe sunscreen has Niacinamide in it.
I got my face healed, and was using Cetaphil cleanser for sensitive skin.
I ended up with another flare up, which I THOUGHT was due to a sunscreen, but no, it was due to me using a cleanser and moisturizer with Niacinamide in it.
So, process of elimination made me recheck the ingredients on the Cetaphil cleanser, and it's the newer formula with Niacinamide in it.
I tried just using the cleanser to see if it was the amount of Niacinamide, and while it improved, I still had the burning and itching feeling in the shower when water droplets got on my face.
I had to remove all Niacinamide from my routine for now.
I could probably handle it in one product, once a day, but I'm not willing to do that right now.
But this video helped confirm my thought that it's probably not that I can never have niacinamide in my routine, but I need to be careful in WHAT products I use that have it in them, and HOW MUCH I am using of those products, and probably how frequently I use those products. It's probably a quantity issue for me.
But my GOD, companies put niacinamide in EVERYTHING. To me, it's ridiculous to put it in everything. For now, I have to avoid certain sunscreens because Niacinamide is in them.

I got painful blistering with TO and itchy, burning, rash-like reactions with Cerave. Cerave hydrating face wash and body lotion (which don’t have it) work perfectly well on my face and I’ve used SA face washes from other brands just fine. I haven’t seen a reaction like that in my skin with ANY other product. 😭

Niacinamide makes my skin very dry and it does burn and sting when I use it . Most of Korean Skincare has Niacinamide in it . So it’s been a bit hard to find products that don’t have it . But I have started to look out for them . 😊 And I think if one of the products has a low percentage and the rest are hydrating and moisturising enough it should compensate. I guess Skincare is a journey and everyone’s different.

This is very informative! I actually used to use cereve products for like 10 or 12 years with no issues and actually used to get many compliments on my skin at the time...but I have to tell you...., I started to experiment with other products; like the anti aging ones with retinol and out of the blue had a terrible rash on my forehead and around my eyes. I later found out it was eczema! I was so upset because whatever I tried, I could not get rid of it and the itching was unbearable. It also really knocked my self esteem down. But now, it’s been about 8 to 10 months or so, and my rash is gone...well, mostly gone. It seems like my skin on my face hasn’t really been the same ever since. It appears as though I have tiny bumps on my forehead that will not go away. I don’t know what to use. I found out my allergies are propylene glycol, methylzialone (not sure I spelt that right), and coconut oil. But almost every product I see on the shelves have that stuff in them. I’m using eczema honey face wash and body moisturizer and currently, bought the Eva naturals Niacinamide 12% and zinc 2% serum thinking it could help maybe clear up some scars, tone down a little redness, and shrink my pores a little. I’m glad I’ve found your channel though. I’ll see how it is for me. Probably just going to test a small patch of skin somewhere else, maybe on my wrist or neck first. Sorry for my novel. Lol

Definitely followed the last piece of advice a while ago. I kept trying to include niacinamide in my skincare routine, and it was just the the one ingredient that gave me itching and rashes and it burned (I tried isolating it once because I couldn't figure out if it was the niacinamide or not, and it turned out to be it).
I don't know if it was a true allergic reaction, but I am sensitive to certain topicals. Anything with fragrance, anything with alcohol or witch hazel (toners in general I just do not tolerate well - I've tried several). At this moment, my holy grail skin care ingredient is azelaic acid. Without it, my skin reverts to all the problems I've ever had lol. Most lotions and creams also break me out because they just clog me up or for whatever reason make me sooooo oily. As a last ditch effort, I used a petrolatum based lotion (thanks to your recommendations) and it honestly saved my skin paired w/ the azelaic acid. Like - it was night and day how good my skin has gotten. I wake up with no oilyness, just a plump/supple feeling on the skin, and I'm not dry! 😭My acne is gone, save for the common pimple here and there, especially during my period.
So I have concluded that I am probably someone who has sensitive skin. I can handle most vitamin c's though, and retinol, as well as that super strong exfoliator that the ordinary makes. So I don't get my skin 🤣glycolic acid is also another one I can unfortunately not tolerate. Hylauronic acid is also something I cannot handle by itself. It's got to be formulated with just about anything else. And if you would like to know: I finally got my regimen down after almost two years of playing around lol. The simpler, the better for me. My cleansers need to have salicylic acid. C: that's just my skin type I guess (I have combo skin, oily and dry patches). I love squalene~ I've kept richer creams for the body but not the face~ I might try it again at a lower concentration, but since the azelaic acid is doing so well for me, I don't see the need for it right now.

I’m one of the very few who’s skin hates Niacinamide. I got extremely sensitive skin. That, Glycolic Acid and Witch Hazel is extremely irritating on my skin among many other things, and caused contact dermatitis. And it’s not purging like ones so often led to believe. My skin barrier is damaged and I’ve never had such a bad skin ever. Red, irritated and inflamed, with loads of red bumps and pimples, hives even, and I don’t have acne prone skin. It stings and burns. No matter what I put on. And I hate that it’s in almost every skincare product these days as my skin can’t take it regardless of where in the formula it sits as an ingredient. Wether it’s the Ordinary or any K-beauty products, I look a hot mess. Actually my skin has never been this bad after starting with Korean skincare. Then again I didn’t start using actives, cleansers nor sunscreen until recently. Previously I never had issues with sensitive or red skin. Beside the occasional pimple in my T-zone due to junk or dairy, I only had oily skin and blackheads to worry about. And the biggest irony of them all is that they are all products for sensitive, red and acne prone skin. Yet instead of fixing it, it made it way worse than it was to begin with. I’ve tried The Ordinary, and various k-beauty brands like Klairs, Cremorlab, Cosrx, Heimish, Isntree, Purito... still red, still red bumps, and inflamed/irritated. I give up. Going back to using minimal with products, and no actives. Along my hairline and on my cheeks I have pigmentation that almost looks like chemical burns. Never had this before. Like a mixture of a tan, and red bumps, but brown in color. So ugly. I hate my skin at the moment. Just wish I never gone crazy with all the Korean skincare products, and stuck to what I’ve been using for years which never broke me out. And skincare isn’t supposed to hurt, sting, burn or be uncomfortable in the 1st place. Regardless of the price, it’s not worth ruining your skin. I also try to use products with a short ingredients list without perfume/fragrance, alcohol etc. I’m also allergic to soy (tofu), and grass pollen.

Dr Dray, are there any ingredients in skincare that should be avoided when using niacinamide? I only get redness and a burning sensation if I use niacinamide serum (I use the one from the Ordinary) before applying 'Say Yes to Cucumber' moisturizer. If I use the two on different days, then I have no issues. I've never had issues combining the niacinamide serum with other moisturizers either. I guess niacinamide must come into reaction with one of the ingredients in "Yes to Cucumber", which is surprising cause it's a really gentle moisturizer with pretty clean ingredients.

I am unable to use products with niacinamide. I was using a skincare line that had niacinamide as an ingredient in their cleanser & moisturizer. Over a period of about 3 months, I started developing what I thought was acne, but it didn't behave like acne - red bumps that never developed into comedones, & were painful. I finally had to stop using the product, not knowing what was the cause. FF to today - I started a new skincare item & within a few hours I noticed red bumps - looked at the ingredients & there it was: niacinamide. Looked back at a different product I had used that caused the same red bumps - lo and behold: niaciniamide. Super frustrating because it seems like people don't believe that this intolerance can happen, & niacinamide is in so. many. skincare products.
