- I've always fancied trying one of these "full dress tourers" and the big BMW R1200RT does not disappoint. This is my first impressions type review of the mighty boxer powered beast....

I recently picked up a 2017 R1200 RT LE with 40k miles on it. Impeccable condition with full BMW history. Rides like a dream for such a large bike handles and stops well too. I found this “older” review very useful Andy thanks.
Hi TMF and all RT/BMW Boxer fans. As my handle will tell you I'm a big RT fan. Had mine 4 years now, it's a 2010 with 60,000 miles on it now. Been around Europe a couple of times on it and numerous UK trips. I've done the sports bikes and sports tourers but once I got this I never used my other bikes - so sold 'em and just have this now. It really does do it all. Here is a list of what impresses me about it:
The Engine - as all 1200 boxer riders know, the torque is just awesome, pulls from any speed in any gear with a cheerful "ok Dude, lets go then" kind of attitude, and then it'll slow you down too in the intermediate gears if your hassling sports bike riders for a bit of fun, by just rolling off. I had a great blast with a Triumph 675 rider last year through some real twists close to the Dolomites. He was hanging off on all the corners, with hard accels and heavy braking, while I just maintained my distance, 2nd and 3rd gears, very little braking and feeling BAD - inspired by some Foo Fighters on the Audio system and the thrill of the chase. This leads me on to.....
The Handling - Vice-less (is that a word?) is what I call it, it just stays so planted at any speed and lean angle, never shakes its head/feels like there is a hinge in the middle/falls into corners or any of those little confidence zapping characteristics of so many bikes. That said much of this can be down to poor suspension settings (how many leave it as they bought it??) and the number one for poor handling - Tyre Pressures!! - always check and set 'em before any ride
The Luggage - takes soooo much stuff and with the liner bags so easy at the hotel - and never leaked yet!
The Screen - just great, set it to blast your visor clear in the rain, cosset you in a calm bubble or drop it a bit when your getting a wiggle on!
The Seat - best I've ridden on bar none! I did add the comfort seat, not for extra comfort, standard was fine, but it is just a little lower and I'm a 30" inside leg so appreciate that little extra foot planting when paddling around with "she who can't sit still"on the back!
The Presence! I wear a hi-viz bib (NOT a Bloody POLITE one I hasten to add - a step too far IMHO) when commuting, and on the traffic jammed dual carriage way section, the traffic just seems to part for me - Marvellous!!
The only real downside is the finish, whilst most of it is ok, you do have to keep on top of it to keep it looking good. I've tried many products and methods and the easiest and best for me seems to be wet the bike down/spray on muc-off on a small area - say 1/2 of the wheel/agitate with a 2" paint brush/rinse off with low pressure water from the garden hose.
So next bike will surely be a water-cooled RT, daren't try one yet, won't be able to leave the show room without signing up!

Great review but width for filtering is all in your head. The GS with expanded vario panniers and Adventurer is actually wider than the RT and the RT is more stable at slow speed so agreed its not the easiest bike to filter with but its not such a big issue when compared to a GS. I know as I have both models. Very informative review however - keep up the good work.

David Meadows so I’m not crazy having a 2014 RT and also want to add the new GS ADV to the stable. Are they that different or I’m I wasting my money???
Also the thing about riding with a pillion is non-existent. It's same as a Pan more or less in my experience, appreciate the caveat about it not being a familiar bike - love the reviews btw

SPOILER : 5 years later TMF will buy the Honda Goldwing and is still in love with his GS.
The radio is awesome. Imagine driving through some sleepy Cotswold village at 5am playing Welcome to the Jungle at full volume.
And that's why I wouldn't be allowed one of these bikes :(

Used to be a bloke down here would blast about on a gold wing with flight of the valkyries (is that the name, whatev) on at about 300bd.

So glad You got to ride one and review it, I have had one since October, but coming from a Pan, don't have a problem filtering, especially with the Panniers Off! Love it! Keep the Vids coming! Helps while away the winter months!

Filtering is such a big part of my riding I couldn't give that up even though I would love one of these
Another good review. I have one of these 2015 bikes and an older GS. I’ve had all versions of the GS from the R1100 onwards and covered a lot of miles and some big mileage days on GS’s - I’m a fan of the GS. Picking the best is pointless as it really just comes down to personal preference, having said that, if I want to cover distance with luggage and arrive feeling civilised the RT has the edge for me. The size is just an illusion it’s just plastic covering space to produce a very effective fairing, if you think the experience is car like or that they don’t handle you cannot of ridden one. Brilliant fuel economy and range as well!
Yes I must admit if I ever look to change out my GS the RT will be close to the top of the list as a replacement (as will another GS!)....

Purchased a used late 2015 R1200RT just over a month ago, and just completed 1200 miles so far. An awesome bike, with great handling ( for such a big bike ) comfort ( heated seat is a surprisingly welcome addition ) and the ability to travel for hours with no ill effects. Planning on doing a bit of touring in the summer and can't think of a better bike. Would certainly recommend to anyone thinking of this bike. Thanks for he excellent review M.F.

+TheMissendenFlyer Couple of points thought you might find interesting, mine doesn't have radio or keyless
( both a bit pointless in my view ), but does have pro-shift gears and apart from 1st to 2nd gear, is superb and makes it super smooth for passengers. Just for your info, front lights ( low and high beam ) are fantastic at night:-). All the best.

+elliott keen Nice one SImon - I agree, you can keep the radio and keyless ignition, the rest I'd take though! Sounds like your gear shift assist pro is similar to mine on the GS, good when under load going up the box. So with no radio I guess there are just blanking plates where the speakers were on the bike I rode???
+TheMissendenFlyer Yes, gear shift pro works up and down the gears. It takes a bit of getting used to, but now use instinctively. Speaker grills are still in place, I guess the 'gubbins' are not underneath. The buttons on the top of left hand fairing are now blanks.
I've had the 2011 model now for 6 months and absolutely love this machine. As you say it has a bit of an old man stigma about it, but I can honestly say it doesn't feel like an old man's bike, it goes like stink and is so comfortable. When cruising along on my CBR600 at 70 I know I am are doing it, but the RT is ready to get going at that, you just don't feel any of the buffering of the open bikes. Horses for courses but I love this bike.

Looks like the perfect bike for doing some long distance trips in Canada and the US. I was planning on a GS, but the wife wasn't as eager on that choice. One test ride had both her and myself convinced that the RT is the best choice for us. Keep up the good work!

Your review is one of the best I have seen of this bike. Your views on the rt1200rt strikes me as being quite honest and btw totally in Line with my own. Maybe it˚s time to give the old war bird some peace and Sunday-drives only (K100RT, July 1986), and finally pull the trigger on one of these new boxers for my own retirement. Once again another great review. After several thousands miles on my RT the only thing I don't like is I have found the saddle bags are very easy to scratch and expensive to repair. Mine have been damaged twice, once when I parked it to close to the garage wall and once when it was scraped in a parking garage. The longest ride I have done stopping only for fuel, food and bathroom is from Mukilteo, WA to Dallas, Texas 1937 miles to my destination. Never found an issue in parking lots or at slow speeds, however each person has a different perception.

Great review, exactly my feelings. I have a r1200rt from 2008 still air cooled and not so fancy dashboard. However, I am glad to see they kept all the feeling/“character” of the bike in the new versions, everything you described applies to all models so far at least from 2005. Maybe one day I upgrade to newer model. Cheers

I went from a R1150 GS down to a F800 GS. Test rode one of these before Christmas. IMHO an impressive machine, plus being a shorty at 5'8" I found it extremely comfortable. A great video, I think it's time to pull the trigger.

Great review. I too struggled with the GS vs RT question having just come from a Honda ST machine. In the end I opted for a GS which I haven't regret. During the test ride my wife asked "the RT is a beautiful bike but which one would you feel better about dropping!" She rides a 700GS. No bias there!! I predict I will eventually end up on an RT but not for the foreseeable future. Love the ruggedness of the GS! The perfect all around machine.

This was a very smart review because all of us who are researching the GS without the intent of every riding it off road, just on motorways wonder if we should be looking at a non-off road offering from BMW, like this RT. Now here comes the million dollar question: Why not replace the GS with this RT machine now? what is it about the GS that makes you prefer it now to the RT even though you do not do off road? , why wait till you get tired of it, what keeps you with it now? something obviously does. that will be a very valuable answer.
I just prefer the looks of the GS - it is a close run thing though, the RT makes more logical sense for me I agree (just can't quite get past that bulbous front end and it having a radio installed!)...
@@TheMissendenFlyer I see, honest answer. But the RT does slightly better it in road handling and over all "feel" ? Looks aside, the riding experience is slightly better ?
Having owned both a 14 GS and an 18 RT, I loved both, They ride different. The rt is more stable when coming to a stop. The GS feels more planted, on city streets at slower speeds. If you like to go fast the rt is way better. I had bmw top boxes on both too, I liked both of them but the one touch locking is nice. I changed my own tires on the gs, but the rt is still on the original pr4s I don`t want to scratch my wheels up a least the first time.

I have a R1150RT and use it as my daily. You have to pick and choose when it comes to filtering. For my daily commute I've taken the panniers off and just run with the top box, which has made it a lot easier.
Purchased a new 2017 RT in April, trading in my 2012 K13S and absolutely love it. Covers the vast distances down under with ease and comfort. Loved your review and agree with all your findings. I use a Bluetooth headset for listening to music and GPS prompts and don’t find it a distraction. I really am enjoying you channel, very informative thank you.

It was this exact review which made me go and buy my first R1200RT LE (65’ plate) I saw this review as it’s one of the only fully in depth uk (if not THE only) reviews I watched the whole thing, went to my local Motorrad Dealer, test rode one for myself and completely agreed with the review and ended up buying one in metallic grey/green pre owned with 16k on it but absolutely mint! Cannot thank the flyer himself! Keep up the work!

I decided to move from the new GS Adventure to the new RT. Had it for just over 2 weeks now. So far, I'm really impressed with it. Very quickly get used to the size of the front fairing and change in seating position. Compared to GSA it's quicker in lower gears, smoother on the throttle response with very little jerking and the quick shifter is smoother, engine sounds less noisy probably due to fairing coverage and turns very capably. Once you retrain yourself from slow manoeuvring the GSA it also becomes easy at slow turning too. Front wheel doesn't leave the road like it did around tight fast bends like it did on the GSA.
+gadgetsandwheels Good to hear from you G&W - was watching your channel a little earlier - I completely agree with you on the RT, quiet, comfy and the quickshifter works better than on my GS....it'll be one of these or the K1600 when I fall out of love with my GS (not yet, wallet still recovering from last weekend's purchase).....thanks for stopping by - TMF
+TheMissendenFlyer Yeah, it was another option to look at the K1600 but I liked the nimble nature for its size of the RT. I was surprised how once you get over the fairing size, it's a nippy and stable bike rolled-up into one. I stopped worrying about the image side of things when I got my first GS some years ago and many of the "cool" crowd couldn't associate with it :-)

+Max Flight ....according to those that own the bike (if you check some of the comments here) filtering is just as possible as on the GS, just takes a bit of practice....
Max Flight I suppose if my primary reason for biking was filtering, then of course I wouldn't have chosen this bike. It is possible but by no means commuter bike. Though, for me, the open road is much more fun than filtering. And I do live South of Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and North of Peak District so I'm a stones throw. So, buying a bike for filtering would have been the wrong choice for me.
Even from video the bike not only looks cool but sounds and handles nice Perfect video BMW bikes are simply top class

TMF, you may remember that I sold my 2003 R1150RT to get a 2015 R1200GS. I believe I made the right choice for me: I am 6'4" with 36" inseam. I believe the new RT was made more friendly to shorter riders. My legs felt a bit cramped on my RT. I have more leg room on the GS, and have the "tall seat" on it. I'm happy with my choice of the GS. The Vario cases don't hold much, so I take a couple of duffel bags on long road trips. The mirrors on the GS allow for wider bags to be carried. I'm sure the new RT is a fine bike.

nice review, I love mine its a 2011 with 27K on it. Bought it brand new. I love heated grips and seat also.

Ejoyed your review, still a great bike. I had the 1100 1995 model back in 1995, so comfortable, did 740 miles in 12 hours crossing Europe, no aches or pain. The handling out of this world, glad they still use the wishbone suspension on the front.
I have been on the fence for months as to whether to go for the GS or the RT. I finally made a decision and it was partially due to this video. I bought a 2017 r1200 rt last weekend. It is one sweet machine. I purchased the optional top case and I've decided to leave that on and add the side cases as needed. Love this bike.
Lovely bike, you're a very lucky man! If/when I come to replace my GS I shall be looking very closely once again at the RT, a beautiful bit of kit....enjoy!

Seems like an almost perfect bike.
I have to imagine that some time soon, given the nature of the bike and the tech development, that it will likely have a DCT transmission in its next iteration.
I would hope so, even if it is as an option.
I just can't see anyone wanting a bike like this and objecting to fully automated gears - and I do not mean CVT, I do mean DCT, like some Hondas.

I really want to swap my wonderful and much loved 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650 for one of these.
In the real world though, I only do anything like a tour once or twice a year, and only in Japan where I live and, given that roads here are narrower, more congested, and subject to a national maximum speed limit of eighty kilometres per hour, yes fifty miles per hour, this bike would be wasted 95 percent of the time.

These RT's are a great machine, but I have to disagree with you about wanting DCT - for me that would put me off the bike, I love the quick shifter :0) ....Lucky for me BMW haven't used DCT on any other machines to my knowledge... Fantastic review of the R1200RT ! I have a 2012 , which I picked up a year and a half ago with only about 14K miles on it, and am in love with the machine. The one you have probably has the low seat option and/or optional lowered suspension. I had a standard seat, and even at 5'9" with a 31 1/2" inseam could not flat foot it. You did a great job of representing this BMW for what it is for prospective buyers.

Well thanks for the review I agreed with all your comments about the RT because I bought one last May. I have only put 3000 miles on it but I love it every time I get on it. And when I'm not on it I love just looking at it in my garage. I have the same keyless start. The Navigation 5 makes traveling out of state so easy. I'm from Chicago and rode it in June to a BMW Rally in Pennsylvania in the Allegheny mountains and never got lost. I'd love to get it over to Europe. Hopefully someday. Thanks again.

Great review! I also have the 2015 model, in Ebony Black, complete with all the available options. The combination of the BMW Navigator 5, Sena, a compatible smartphone and this motorcycle is just perfection.

Great review of a superb bike .It is a heavy bike when doing slow manouvering but once the speed increases the weight disappears and is a brilliant handling bike for a large touring machine .Have had my bike since 2008 and love the bike for all the touring trips we have done on it .You can take everything plus the kitchen sink on it too in the luggage !

Daniel, many thanks for the review - I just watched your Triumph Trophy review, and you mention the price. On this R1200RT review you don't mention the price. If the UK is anything like Australia, there is a big difference in price. For example, the BMW R1200RT is AU$32,500 approx' ride away, and the Triumph Trophy is AU$23,490, that's a big AU$9,010 !! What is the difference in price in the UK? Great videos, keep it up mate!

We are clearly on the same wave link TMF as I have just found your road test. If all my numbers come up tonight Monday I will be waiting, outside my local BMW Motorcycle dealer, for it to open.The demo of the radio I found interesting as one of my riding colleagues listens to music via his sat nav and you have just proven to me I was correct in not doing the same. I think I would find it irritating rather than enjoyable as I just love the roar our bikes engines gives out. Yet another good review.

I've watched all your vids, but came back to this one a bunch of times. Well after a test ride I was flipping hooked. As I needed a 2-up machine with comfort for the pillion Vs. the new GS which I also rode and loved, but 2-up lends its self to the big RT, not the GS for me.
It's kinda like my Ducati ST4S which still has a safe place in my garage, maybe 60-70 lbs more than the Duc. But the Duc is much more sport focussed. Funny but the new R-RT and my 2002 Ducati ST4S both have about the same power to weight ratio so the acceleration is about the same, which I like for this big old comfy cruiser...
The RT is much less frumpy than my old K1200LT which is a true beast!
Once anyone gets used to the new R1200RT they will be surprised how this thing loves to rail through many corners that intimidate some sportbikes.

V useful, I’m shifting from a Honda Rune cruiser to a touring bike and the RT is rising up the desirability list, it’s either this or a Honda Pan European!
I got a 05 model.gearbox just gave up at4300 miles😞but handles superb,truly a bike for all seasons!with heated seats,grips,an massive adjustable fairing!but hunched over riding position.that have you in pain after a hour or2!
Can't be as painful as my Panigale Mark, this thing is like riding a sofa! Lovely bike (on my list!)...

I think in and ideal World if money were no object we'd perhaps all have one of these in the garage alongside our other bikes,
I haven't ridden this incarnation so it was very interesting to get your take.

My friend owns the R1200RT and says that its in a league of its own. His previous bikes were Pan Europeans and to hear him speak about the BMW speaks volumes about it. We own the K1600 GTLE. Great review.

No my friend hasn't ridden the K1600 yet. He's been riding for over 40 years and says that there's no other bike out there for him. He's similar in height to you I think.
They're two different to even attempt to compare them....
Well they are both large BMW touring bikes so I think a comparison is fair surely...I agree they each attempt to solve the same problem but in a very different way (boxer twin versus 6 cylinder for example)....
Just loooove my 2014 RT LC as a daily commuter. I ride about 3.000km a month on it and despite its size and dimensions, filtering on highways and the Ring around Brussels go very smoothly! Even in the city center, it's still quite ok for me. Wouldn't trade it for any other bike! (except maybe for a new R1250RT... :-))
I think I’m right in saying the panniers are about the same width as the bars so gives you a good idea what gaps you can get through. I filter on the Edinburgh bypass, it’s possible but it’s not easy. The fact it’s so easy to ride slowly offsets the width. It has a hell of lot of road presence so car drivers notice you more.
They are lovely bikes. The only issue some have is the cramped riding position. I put lowered pegs on which helped but would prefer more room so I could get a 90 degree angle at my knees. I struggle after a while.

Bitten the bullet and just agreed a deal on one of these, trading in my GS. Didn't bother with the radio though. Was determined to hate it but really impressed on the test ride.

I swapped from water-cooled R1200GS to new R1200RT in March ....... Brilliant bike, I run with the 28L top box without panniers, and filtering is on par with GS.

Great review! I have one of these, and drive in traffic daily, filtering most of the time. It is not such a wide bike, but if you're used to a GS, it may feel like it, what with all the Tupperware around you. Interestingly, mine went in for some small repairs the other day, and they gave me a GS as a loan bike. Also felt strange for me in the beginning - different handlebar position, lower footpegs etc. I can understand why people wax lyrical about the GS. But I still prefer my RT - amazing for touring, which we do regularly.

Warning: visiting your local BMW dealer has a huge propensity for expense! My son's buying the XR1000 tomorrow (thanks TMF for review and comments). Factory demo - big savings. The problem is there's an ex-demo 2016 RT next to it with all the toys fitted......I think I'll capitulate and squander more of the kid's inheritance. Overall, by only 'concern' is the physical size making for more of a challenge getting both bikes and the car into the garage, but otherwise can't fault it. Pity the Navigator 5 is so expensive though. Thanks for the great review - I also don't get the radio - in my world it's about as much use as an ashtray.....
If you're shelling out for the mighty RT (great idea by the way, lovely machine) what's another £600 for the Nav V? ;0) Seriously the Navigator is a brilliantly integrated bike information system, I strongly recommend it if you can squeeze to it.....have fun on the new machine(s)...
I know this is an old post, but getting to the expense of visiting the dealer.....
I paid a deposit on recent second hand R1200GS iconic, number 16/100, over the phone. Went to the dealers to sign the papers and sitting on the showroom floor was freshly unwrapped 100/100. Yes, I spent another two grand on that one instead.
Now moving back to the UK after best part of two decades abroad, my main priority is the extra expense of a house with a nice integral garage, preferably a double and only for the bikes, nothing else.
And there, TMF, is why all us bikers are broke.....
Nice Review. Ive just signed on the dotted line for one of these today, an ex police Demo bike, so has smaller panniers (makes for easier filtering), single seat, lacks gear assist shift pro and lacks the radio, but had a huge cost saving ($5000). I am in Australia.

I had an RT and flipped it for a GS which recently got stolen. Would go back to the RT in a heartbeat. Amazing bike

+TheMissendenFlyer I use my bike daily to commute into London. Unfortunately someone stole my GS whilst I was at work. The GS was awesome and great at filtering. The RT fitted me better and for and all round machine for all seasons it works better than the GS. Although wider than the GS I found it fine for filtering, you have to be a little more patient through certain gaps but my journey time did not decease with the GS.

I have a 2013 R1200RT which is the last air/oil cooled model and it is everything I could want and more:) I live in Southern California so I do lane splitting (carefully) on the congested freeways here and also mountain and desert road riding with no issues. I have just over 26k on the odometer and bought it new.

6 weeks and 2000km into ownership, and I continue to be amazed with how the RT contently exceeds expectations, especially handling at speed. Still waiting for Givi to supply the top box mount allowing me to use my old 46l Monokey unit as was not prepared to shell out CA$1500 for the OEM item. With this I'll be able to store the panniers at home unless heading on an extended trip and reduce the girth (my wife's first comment was 'man, has she
got a big butt!').
I'm still mulling over getting the Navigator 5, but was disappointed to discover the extended information you've praised on the GS is (apparently) not provided on the RT (are there any other owners who can comment on this?). Despite the excellent dashboard
and colour display, I wish more than one information category could be displayed
simultaneously- personally I like to see tyre pressure and outside temperature,
and not have to keep switching. The speedo is clear (kph only for Canada), but
no mph - oddly the digital readout is only kph too - just how hard can it be to
make the digital display switchable, BMW?) So as soon as I had south of the border, I have to rely on the GPS.
The fuel consumption is a very unexpected bonus - up tp 4.4l/100km (64mpg imperial/ 53mpg US) which is only marginally worse than my previous 700GS. Contrast this to my son's XR which seems pretty consistent at 7.5l/100km, and that would explain his 'range anxiety' when on an extended route with me.
When purchasing any BMW, the ‘factory options’ are remarkably good value when contrasted with the accessories such as top-boxes, exhausts. As mine was a BMW Canada factory demo, all the option boxes were ticked, some of which I may have not
specified if buying new. However, I view the keyless ride / central locking as quite outstanding, and even the radio has been used in traffic (used to view a radio as in the same category as ashtray…)

Odd what you say about the various displays, you sure the on bike displays (never mind the Nav 5) aren't configurable?? - on my GS pretty much everything can be displayed anywhere if you want too, although it is all a bit convoluted getting through the setup menu....either way, have fun and enjoy - all the best - TMF
Sadly it seems the info section is GS exclusive. From the Motorrad site - "MyMotorcycle feature for the R1200GS* and R1200GS Adventure**" Now even my local dealer is unaware of this and I keep hoping he'll let me plug one in to confirm one way or the other, but given the above I am not hopeful. Seems odd to me that the electronics are not more standardized between the R models. Regarding the dashboard display, one can to select only one of many items. (consumption, outside temp, range, avg speed, tyre pressure and more).
How odd...and as you imply, somewhat disappointing (as it's such a great feature on the GS)...
Went back in the archives for this one. Thinking about adding a used RT to the stable.

I just bought a 2015 with Over 6,000 miles! Rode it from Austin Texas to Las Vegas. It goes ok at 120mph. Odd that it isn't as fast as my 1996 K1100 LT. I found fifth and sixth to be lacking and need to shift down to forth to get decent power, unlike my K where I never had to downshift. Maybe it needs a couple more cylinders?
Heated seat sounds lush. Keeping the plums warm in the colder climate can be struggle sometimes!

Large and bulbous ??? After riding a 1,000 lb Gold Wing for the last 5 years ( a great bike by the way ), I find my 2014 RT, at 550 lbs, quite light and slim ! It's a lot more fun to ride than the Wing, although I love the Wing for what it is.

Use a top box and leave panniers at home. Filtering is the same for both bikes, slightly wider with boxes on.
Elect screen is nice in rt as I drop the screen in traffic and raise it as I go faster to turn off the sound(wind noise) and am able to look over the screen. Also heated seat on rt is an advantage in cool weather.
I went to test ride the 1200 RS and ended up with the RT .The girlfriend loves it and feels safer with the size and stability of it . I dont have the panniers fitted normally and just rely on the top box which makes filtering a lot easier ,I just hope this bike gets rid of the fuddy duddy image the old RT had

i was looking at one of these RT's and a ST 1300 Pan , trying to get an impartial comparison , and i must say your review has swayed me toward the RT , so a big thumbs up for that ;)
...though I've never ridden a Pan European and I only hear good things about them....it's Allen Millyard's day to day bike so it must be good....
Was in BMW today and these things are absolute leviathans. You should try an F800ST mate, I keep eyeballing one as a step up from my CBR600F

+Lee McDonald I think the F800 would be a great step up from the CBR600F - these RT's are big, but fantastic once you get 'em rolling. Coming from an R1200GS myself it's not such a big leap to the RT....

Thanks for the great review. I did a test ride during last summer and I loved it, the engine feels smoother than the GS for some reason. I also did a test ride on the K1600GTL and I was amazed how silky smooth the 6 six cylinder engine was, it is my favorite engine (apparently British firm Ricardo developed the six cylinder engine for BMW). I do not know why the K1600 feels lighter and more nimble but on paper it is heavier than the RT. I heard rumors that BMW will be releasing a new K1600 in 2017. I am planning on upgrading my bike next summer not sure which bike to go (GS vs GSA vs RT vs K1600). Please do a comparison video between the K1600 and the RT if you could.

Thanks for the review, 'flyer! I had a GS for 17 years - just got nicked. Who'd have thought anyone would want to nick one of those? Anyway, I tried to do a bit of offroading in the early days, and it's not really doable. John Deacon (RIP) could do it, but so much easier on a F650 or whatever the latest is. I always found the GS a bit heavy and tall, especially around town, and if you do any motorway work at all, the wind is a pain. I went through about 4 windscreens before finding one that was OK on the motorway, and of course it's too tall in town and on hot days. Bottom line, next bike will be a RT, once the kids are old enough to be left behind!
Yes the RT is an amazing machine - I liked it much more than I thought I would. Defo near the top of my list when I come to replace my GS......sorry to hear about yours :0(
Nice review. Regarding filtering, the bike is actually about the same width as a GS and filtering is easy once you get used to the bike - no more difficult than a GS, though with both, riding pannier-free is the option if you're a central-London commuter. Weight-wise, it's only a few KG more than a GS Adventure and carries it lower down, so it's very manageable :)

I've had 2 previous gen. RTs and have just sold my GSA to go PCP on a new RT - picking it up the end of Nov :)
I rode the Multistrada DVT, R1200GS-W and R1200RT (all 2016 inc electronic suspensions) back-to-back at the weekend, for about 15 miles each time, on the same roads/circuit. All were great, but it surprised me that I thought the RT was the best handling and most comfortable. I got off and used the 'magic carpet' ride expression too. It was like first class airline travel. In the States, filtering is illegal (except CA), and there's plenty of long straights and great weather temperature variation, so its a good choice over here. Maybe my next bike too! :-D
Yeah, an excellent machine for crossing the US I would think...currently top of my list for when I come to replace the GS (unless the new GS is something even more amazing of course.....)
As a GS rider myself, you got to admit this bike get’s stuck in your head doesn’t it? Riding this was a revelation for me. I always assumed riding a motorcycle was supposed to be uncomfortable. All the discomfort of the gs is just not worthed anymore after this. The GS sucks at highway. This one is made for what we use the GS: road. I can count on one hand the amount of times I went offroad with mine. we all buy a GS for the looks and the world tour we will likely never make. I’m sold on this one.

its a marmite bike - love them or hate them .Coming from an FJ1200 i was in the latter camp even with the double camshaft , so i bought a K1300GT . However i have too say I never thought id love the GS but in the latest water-cooled guise its a revelation so i can't see why you'd want an RT over a GS particularly if you don't tour. The vibration did my head in on the RT and at sensible cruising (90) it never settled down .but appreciate the review

Love my 2010 RT,The sat nav is great,the Audio is great and the handling is awesome for a big bike.Do find the stock seat gives me a bit of a numb bum after 100 miles or so but i only paid 8 grand for it with 4K miles.Compared to my new Harley Road glide ultra the BM feels like a moped,wont be selling either bike for a long time.Good review on this video,more real world than biker mag bollocks.

My favourite amongst the BMW offerings. Decent looking headlight cluster, too. Interesting comparison with gadgetsandwheels review, he having recently replaced his 1200 GS Adventure with a 2016 RT.

Excellent review as always. I test rode one in 2014 without the electronic suspension (embargoed at that time) and wasn't particularly impressed with directional stability when cruising. I would guess the ESA has sorted this. I too found the screen very effective - too effective perhaps as I found myself feeling rather remote and no longer remaining as focused as I should be. Right now I'm faced with the choice - GS1200 or RT. I suspect the former as there remain some unpaved roads that I need to explore here in British Columbia.

2 things i dont like about the new RT: it feels cheap compare to the previous model ( lots of plastic ) and the beautiful dashboard becomes totally illegible once the sun is out ( no solar protection and it also vibrates with speed ).

Owned prevoius incarnation truly magnificent bike (it just broke too often on me and BMW dealer in Eire prooved to be little helpful) but handlingwise was superb! Such a big machine handling so light and nimble!

Thanks TMF great review. My wife and I took one out for a test ride recently (she rode it as well) and it brought memories back of my 2007 RT. The new one is poles apart from the 09 version and definitely a consideration for the next bike (currently own a 2014 GSA).
Taking another one out on the 7th June to see if my first impressions are still true and then who knows after that?

Although I love the GSA to bits and like you will never put it through what it was intended for I still burn a candle for the RT. Having ridden them for the best part of my previous career in the Met Traffic, they feel like an old friend.
Let the stereo types not deceive you they truly are a formidable machine and excel in the twists and turns of the lanes.
Will certainly let you know how I get on at my local dealer (Cannon BMW) and what I decide to do.

Yes, MissendenFlyer I am sure it will make some happy bikers and pillions. I saw the review of the new street twin and I can't wait to get my behind on that one. It looks fantastic and most of the pro riders are over the moon about how sweet it is to ride it. Maybe it's time for my street triple to have a baby sister. I will have to check the contains of my coffers to see if Mr Osborne left a bit in there for me to spend ;) (and there is the space issue as well). Have a nice one.
Yes that Street Twin has been getting some rave reviews, nice little machine....will be interesting to see what the pros make of the T120 when it breaks cover.....
