As a child, I remember going on the through train from Aberystwyth to London Euston. From Aberystwyth it was hauled as far as Shrewsbury by a 37. At Shrewsbury it was replaced by a 47 as far as Wolverhampton where it was replaced either with an 86 or an 87. The 37 was always the one with the most character.
Love the 37s and the sound they make, as does my dad. The horns aren't on the roof as they are located inside the loco's nose, which you can tell because there is a pair of circular horn grilles on each end for the sound to come out of. Only the 37s built with split headcode boxes and access doors had the horns in the nose; the later ones without end doors had the horns to the roof for some reason.
Good video, no roof horns on your Lima 37 though as they are behind the circular grills on the front of the nose (phase 1 class 37 with phase 2 & 3’s having horns on the roof like your green one).. The aerials would be to show it is an RETB fitted loco and the Highland Region sticker on the cab side’s are for Inverness’s based locos
The spilt box version he has the horns was mounted internally, you can see the grills above each headcode box for them, the centre headcode 37s they were mounted on the roof
I notice that your model sports the "arrows of indecision" made famous by British Rail who, most often used to display boards at stations displaying; "British Rail regrets to announce - all trains running as normal."
Hi Lawrie, brilliant video, looks very nice! I'm a big fan of the 37s. That particular one (split headcode front) has horns in the nose, not on the roof. Centre headcode has them one the roof (as with the Hornby one).
Lawrie, have you driven/will you drive a 37? It would be fantastic to see the whole procedure to fire one up from cold, and of course some (mechanically responsible) thrashing! Plus I’ve always wondered what it looked like in the nose ends.
Hi Lawrie, I once saw a colas rail class 37 pushing a network rail test train on the mainline, I heard it before I even saw it. Managed to film it too, Stay safe :)
The Class 47 is my favourite diesel locomotive but when it comes to Diesel shunter Lawrie your Ruston Locomotive is my favourite diesel shunter my favourite 0-6-0 tank engine is the Jinty
@@lmm I've seen 37 254 a few times while been out traveling by train and it's very strange to see a loco that I spent a lot of time on , yes it's come out of retirement lol.so great it's back on the network again 😊
Lawrie, a very nice model, thanks for sharing the video. As a " Yank" I quite like the sound of a Class 37 , a very powerful , purposeful sound, and I like the videos where they are doing a full " thrash."
The horns are right on the Lima loco, the split headcode examples have the horns mounted inside those little round grilles high on the nose on either side of the doors rather than up on the roof.
Hi Lawrie, you say at the beginning that the horns are missing from the roof. No they’re not, in the split headcode box 37’s the horns were in the nose end behind the little round grilles.
Now I feel really old. The Walsall - Water-Orton line ran alongside our school and a procession of MGR hopper trains and various other freight hauled by classes 25, 24, 20's in multiple, 31, 37, 40, 44, 45, 46, 47 and 56 trundled past all day long. The 47's and 56's were being turned out with wrap round yellow ends, large logo and large numbers in corporate blue at the time (must have been around 1980?). Highly practical for us because it meant we could even note the numbers down while we were in English Literature class 😂. I still managed to get a B in my O level exam... I think there'll likely be a few large logo 80's diesels on my future garden and garage layout. It'll make a change from filthy Black 5's and 9F's.
The 37s are the most superior diesel locomotives ever built in my opinion. The split box 37s were built with horns inside the nose rather than mounted on the roof (you can see the circular grills high up on the front of the nose which cover them). Regarding the 37/9s, only 6 were rebuilt of which 3 survive today. 37906 is being restored at the Battlefield Railway, 901 is close to returning to the mainline and 905 is, I believe, stored at Leicester. 905 and 906 have Ruston engined which I think are 4 cylindered and sound really nice. Great video as always, I enjoy seeing the retro models. I like the fact they are still able to run decades after being built, much like the real ones themselves. :)
I've always regarded the Class 37 as the british Version of the american GP-7/GP-9...basically indestructible and still going strong despite being a "first generation," diesel that replaced steam. Ironically enough it was the GP-7/9 for me that got me into diesels...along with some help from its ALCo analogue the RS-3.
Yes, the class 37's with the 2 headcode boxes had their horns mounted in the nose, there should be 2 small round grills above the headcode boxes which is where the horns would be... Good locomotives though..
Lovely locos Had a chance to drive I think 37075 on the churnet valley when it was resident on the railway The loco in the past had a new nose fitted and both ends are different I also have the Lima 37 in Police livery Just a question but did Lima become part of Vitrains ? And not swallowed up by Hornby Brilliant vlog as usual
Hornby still sell the Lima version in their cheaper Railroad range of models with upgraded motor to allow it to operate on DCC better and you can get one DCC with sound fitted. Still a great looking locomotive for its age. If you want get the next level in detail class 37 you need to get either a Bachmann, ViTrains or coming soon the Accurascale versions and judging by what has currently come from Accurascale their version will look excellent.
Hi Lawrie I was browsing through Ebay and I came across a hornby maroon 0-4-0 Tank engine and a ventilated box van in MSLR livery does that happen to be the Mid Suffolk Light Railway Livery ?
hey up lawrie love the lima class37 if u ever need any lima bits just drop us message you will find lima engines run really really well even if they get rate dirty n need servicing they still run well :)
If it keeps slowing down at the same place, I'm sure you'll find that it's the track, not the loco. If it was stuttering once every time the wheels went round, then yeah, the loco needs looking at.
Hi Lawrie. Not really a diesel fan, but who doesn't love a Class 37? I don't know why they are called tractors, they just purr like a big cat! What does it say at the bottom of your T-shirt? I looked at your merchandise website and I'm afraid you just have the basic "I'm currently unsupervised"; if you get the more interesting version(s) I would consider buying one.
The prices the way they are at the moment you’d pay twice as much for a non runner Lima Loco 🥴 been a real price jump during lockdown in the second hand market, especially on fleabay. Real Bargain that I’m looking forward to the train fairs again this year
Wow nice. I dont really like lima models but still looks nice. if you want i can send a DB br 151 from Lima i dont know if it runs but i got it from my uncle
It is not unusual to see short trains with multiple locos up front, as Railtrack or whatever they are presently called, charge per train movement over the tracks so, if you had say 4 light locos to move, it would be cheaper to add them to an already scheduled short train, therefore having 5 locos on a short train.
I can just hear all the model railway snobs laughing at the lima and triang the new class 37 you can buy now sell for £250 or more unless you buy the Hornby railroad basic model witch id the old lima mould anyway BUT i myself have a great love for the older models
Both models running the same speed on analog is extremely rare. I wonder how much they can both pull together :-) I have a Class 37 as well. Even though I live in California, I love modeling other countries just as much. My other account has a video of it: ua-cam.com/video/8sSG4xLARbw/v-deo.html
pulling test on the green 37 is not reasonable, reason is that the 37 has traction magnets in it which work on steel track, however you are using nickel silver track.
Bought a lima 37 years ago it was the first new loco I'd ever bought and it was dire , the wheels weren't square on the axles and it was the worst quality I've ever had , even my old lima shunters from cheap sets were far better made and ran better .
The thing is though, Lawrie.... Do you flail and bellow when a 37 fires up and/or thrashes and clags away? Cos if you don't, are you really a tractor basher? 🤔 You've got to have some fun, haven't you? 🤣😂
Pretty sure the horns on a split headcode 37 are behind the grilles on the nose above the headcode boxes rather than on the roof.
Yep 😉
