upgrading my soundboks 2

  • First, I LOVE my Soundboks 2 speaker, I LOVED my Soundboks 1 speaker as well! BUT as with anything, there's always a way to improve it! I had an issue with my tweeter blowing. It's a nice sounding tweeter and works well in the configuration... until it blows.
I was/am not using my Soundboks daily or even regularly. When I did/do use it, I ran/run it about 75% of it's max. I don't push my controller hard either (I like my equipment and want it around as long as possible).
The warranty is great, they sent me 3 additional tweeters... but as with any warranty, it eventually expired. SO it was either pay for another tweeter I knew would blow, or get something more robust and do the install myself. I did the later of course!
So I decided on an inexpensive horn tweeter (but one that had some "real" reviews). A horn tweeter, unlike the silk dome tweeter, carries farther and it brighter. If you're up on the speaker, it's definitely gonna be a little more harsh. BUT if you're setting up for a field party or a camp party at Burning Man (see vids) the horn makes more sense because the sound will travel farther and be clearer over a longer distance (that I've found). Plus the horn tweeter is more durable. I just made sure the tweeter could work with the 72 watts RMS the speaker's class D amp puts out for the tweeter.
As you can see in the vids, the project was very simple and although I didn't have a video of the final run, I assure you, after several weeks of djing off my porch every Friday for my neighbors, the tweeter did extremely well. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them!

Hi, I need to replace the display on my Soundboks 2 - have you made a video of that?

Hi, I have not yet. What's going on with your display? I assume you're referring to the control panel with the knobs and inputs?

@@justbekazu I’m not quite sure, because the volume button was loose as I bought it - used. Now I would like to fix it.

@@Woodoo151 ohhh… well the knobs become loose on the 1s and 2s. One of mine is loose too. I looked for an allen key or screw to tighten, but didn’t see anything

I wonder how it would sound with some cerwinvega! Woofers?
Or will it ruin the amp.

the magnets on the woofers aren't very heavy... I would assume that anything robust would stress the box out bc the box's dimensions were designed for those drivers... I would assume the amps would push anything... not for as long tho. That would be a fun experiment, finding drivers that would be able to run in that size inclosure but have more thump... everything needs more thump! I have two soundboks 2, I haven't had the pleasure of using the 3 yet. I'm not saying they made improvements based on my requests, but I got the 1 when they first came out (I think it was a crowd funding thing) and immediately loved it but wanted more from it. As a dj (#justbekaz, if you're curious) I wanted more bump (so larger ports for more air flow) and more input options like quarter inch and xlr. I'm sure I wasn't the only person requesting these things (but I'd like to think I was one of the first). it looks like on the 3 they've also improved the tweeter (not only placing it more appropriately in the middle of the drivers for a better blend (something i mentioned as well)) so this upgrade may not be needed. I've used my upgraded 2's a bunch of times since the lock down, and the horn tweeter makes a huge difference in the ability to clearly hear the mid/highs farther out. Low frequencies are easy, you can feel base (if not just hear it) but the mid highs would be lost if you were in the back of the pack. Now those frequencies push just as hard if not harder and you can hear all the music from farther out.

@@justbekazuhoping one day I'll be able to get the sound boks2 .... I ha have three partybox 100's.... sounds really good.....but im guessing one SB would still be louder....also have two bumpboxxes... extremely 🔊 loud....just no Bass!!

@@theotherhouse5910 I have the bumboxx flare 8 and utra! No, the bass isn't a deep as the SB (cabinet space is the key) BUT they are great for toting to the park and to the beach and general gatherings where you're not trying to be the absolute center of attention! And I thought the mic thing was a silly addition to the 8 until I needed a wireless mic bc the one I brought crapped the bed. Came in very handy!

I did! It’s fantastic! Definitely worth doing! The range for clarity is much further out and it blends great even relatively close up.

Put a capacitor on the tweeter if you haven't already might help it last longer

The tweeter was just too small and soft for what I use my boxes for. The horn has a stronger build and magnet, and pushed high ends sooo much further!
