Local shop did a carry in rebuild on my AW4. They wouldn't activate the 1yr warranty unless/until I immediately drive it back for them to test drive / inspect after I installed it. Been holding strong.
The owner of a shop I worked at had the transmission go out in his dodge truck. He had the alignment, oil change kid help him take it out. They took it to a transmission shop to be rebuilt. They put it back in and it didn't act right. A few days later it stopped moving and was towed back to the shop. They ended up sending the whole truck to the transmission shop. I guess they left some spacer or something out on the converter and destroyed the fresh transmission. I've never had one apart so I'm not sure if it was on the transmission or flywheel side. I'm not sure if they charged to build it again or just charged for the extra labor pulling it and putting it back in. Either way, the boss (a small business owner himself) was mad at the transmission shop when he was the one that messed the job up.
I hate to see you taken advantage of so much, but I'm glad you are taking steps to improve that situation. Your knowledge is invaluable and I hope you keep doing what you're doing.
Auxiliary cooler is a great idea, I smoked a 727 rebuild because I didn’t flush the cooler and should’ve installed an external auxiliary cooler. This is a great video to help people who swap or rebuild their transmissions.
I love it when I rebuild a trans and tell the people bring it back in 500 miles so I can service it. Then 6 months and 10k miles later they come back and say it isn't shifting right. I'm like, haven't seen you, haven't seen it to make sure you installed it right, and now you want me to warranty it? I started telling people the warranty ends when your outta sight of my shop. Drives me nuts people bringing me parts off Amazon to have installed, then they bring it back and tell me it's not working right. I'm like, well, I didn't sell you the part so it's on you.
I have a 95 zj, so 42RE transmission. I didn't realize when we got the Jeep, someone cut the transmission cooler lines and connected them together next to the radiator. So the only cooler this transmission had was the cooler lines. Drove that way at least a year, some drives over an hour long. Never seen issue. I put it back to stock cooling as soon as i saw the line. I didn't take chances, i put a new radiator because i had to wonder why they bypassed the transmission cooler in the transmission. Only issue this thing has is not wanting to downshift to first at a stop, and very first start of the day, when cold, it doesn't like going to second gear. I don't blame it, it's only a winter issue, and very cold when it happens. Maybe time to do a fluid change on it.
The salvage yards close to me only give a warranty if it’s installed by a shop and I have seen so many come in that people for some reason can’t understand that fluid level is critical
As a retired mechanic I sure feel sorry for you for all the BS you went through that is sad and yeah you just you can't guarantee what other people do so do your best job to get it put in safely and correctly and flush them cooler lines is the biggest problem there is that will kill anything you are a fair man
Calif here...in my youth, I've done maybe 25 transmissions; all inline as sideways had barely come out. I've done only C-4, C-6, 727, 350 and 400's. Only on one were the clutches down to the metals and warped blue. The parts for that one came out of a core. On the rest, I've seen the original inked part numbers on the frictions...no wear at all. Most have had hard seals and lucky that the owners knew enough to stop driving the car and making things worse. I loved those 727's. Throw the parts in a box...shake it a bit and an assembled transmission pops right out.

So many shops were ripping guys off with Cummins trucks spray painting the trans with alumiblast and replacing a speed sensor and charging for a full rebuild

Because of the "professional shade tree" mechanics, I will no longer do the bench jobs. The shade treers will NOT flush the cooler lines, lie about check engine lights, engine performance issues and improper installations.
Been building since the late 90s , I learned very quickly never to do warranty on carry outs / customer installs . The amount of ID10T's who are unable to stab a converter properly is astounding
I bought my second car when I was sixteen. It was a 1978 Camaro that I bought in 1987. It was only nine years old but within a year of buying it the the engine spun a rod bearing and the transmission burned up. You could actually hear the fluid boiling, it sounded like popcorn popping. The transmission shop had to flush the cooling lines out and told me that they had no idea how it lasted as long as it did.
I recall only rebuilding just 1 of those units and they did not flush cooler lines and I recommend replacing radiator and check valve which they did not do! It did not last very long and they came back and told me about it. Usually people would try to blame me for failures and I would tell them to bring it back and that would not happen. After hearing from people I would just tell them that if they want an overhaul that I would only do it if I removed it and installed it.
I just saw a short where a guy made the statement that a transmission (rebuild) is like taking a 100 question test and you fail if you get one question wrong. Long story short I put the transmission in and when I was blowing the cooler out found it was blocked. The 50 radiator guy slid the hose over the shipping cap on cooler.
42 and 44RE's were the bane of my existence for many many years. Have only rebuilt 3 47's and the only one that had an issue was the one that wasn't installed by me, they also didn't give me the valve body when I rebuilt it nor did they want a new converter. I didn't warranty that transmission. He came complaining a week later saying I didn't build it right for him. I made him help me take it out... And we found out a lot. And then he paid me for a whole new rebuild and I installed it. The guy learned a lot from his own mess.
I had my aw4 rebuilt and got a new torque converter. The shop warranty stipulated that I flushed lines and cooler. I ran new lines and a heavy duty cooler in line with the rad cooler. I used a transfer pump to push the junk out of the rad cooler. I had to bring it to their shop because it was slipping. They said it was a failed seal causing a pressure drop. They pulled it fixed it and reinstalled it on their dime which I was super appreciative of.
I actually had my wjs 42re blow. That snap ring broke and taking it apart. Everything was burned so I just tossed a new one in. I just learned a whole lot and will be making several changes and might buy another to go through and make good. The current one works but doesn't go into overdrive doing 70mph.
Everybody needs to work (sell) to the general public then they’d understand , I’ve owned my own shop for 40 yrs and owned auto parts store also , transmission and a/c compressors are a pain , you HAVE to flush the system first or you’re wasting your time , if your old one is burnt up or trashed where does all the trash end up ? In the lines , cooler and the torque converter a/cs is in the lines filter and evaporator core and condenser coil , so you have to clean those out or the replacement parts you put in will be trashed also !!!! Place I use to buy used trannys from wouldn’t sell you one without you bought a filter kit and a can of cooler and line flush and most part stores won’t warranty an a/c compressor unless you replace filter drier , orafice tube and flush for system ! It’s hard to educate customers on some of these things but if you put labor and warranty cost back on them ( instead of yourself ) they’ll educate themselves really quick !!!!
@@jeffthekiller6648how much of a warranty should someone give on a $350, 25 yr old transmission? This mechanic is selling way too cheap to be offering any type of warranty. I offer a carry in /out rebuild service and charge thousands for rebuilds with a warranty but only if a professional shop installs them. Otherwise no warranty. They know the terms when the purchase from me.
I used to work at a transmission shop. I can't tell you how many times the customers would break stuff during installation and try to blame us lol usually the pump when they forced the engine and transmission together because they didn't recheck to see if the tc was fully seated.
Your 💯correct its amazing being a mechanic at the lies people tell when your trying to figure out what the vehicle is doing. The public is ridiculous. New supporter love the Cherokee. First 3 jeeps I built for my daughter was cherroke, been up to ride with Darren several times at Summer town . Great wat to teach one how to drive and have cheap fun
Thanks for sharing. Yep those should be no warranty for how little you charge for them. I had issues with my xj trasmission always running hot up hill. Even with a cooler it still ran hot. I had the local transmission shop rebuild it and he mentioned when going up hills the trasmission will run cooler in 3rd and wow it made a big difference. AW4 4x4 1999 limited
You're dealing with used transmissions you never know what you're going to get. I deal with junk yards all the time they tell you it's got low miles on it it runs great and then you put the motor in it's knocking. I've been through it all. But I've also had really really good junk yards that try to test their stuff if they can. Used parts suck but you got to do what you got to do.
I'd never offer a transmission etc without doing the install myself. I'd also identify all my parts, eg punch mark with with an ID hidden somewhere or laser etch with a logo, that makes it hard for people to return their broken parts, saying it's what you supplied. Basically, everyone is out to take advantage
Thats a good price especially consider8ng the prices of stuff around here. There's nowhere near chester county that even will rebuild a manual trans anymore much less warranty one. If I still had my old xj, I'd be buying from you
some transmission coolers dont flow well even clean so some people i seen take the lines and loop them.(nissan xterra?) I love rebuilding them but got some horrors too. Your customers gotta be thankful you love what you do. If ya find as good trustworthy mechanic keep him by obeying that golden rule. treat others the way you want to be treated
Every time I've brought my car to a transmission shop they immediately tell me it's a bad transmission. I've fixed every one of those "bad" transmissions with the exception of one! Point of my story, Don't trust transmission shops.
Man I feel like most people will be more careful with the way they install a trans knowing they can’t return it to you. Some will still let the neighbor crush their coolant lines and trash stuff but you just can’t fix stupid. Some people will do anything to save a dollar. I’m not even a jeep guy but I enjoy your videos. I live about 45 minutes from you so if I end up getting into a XJ I’ll be looking you up.
The only used trans warranty I've ever seen. Is at like pull-a-part or LKQ and its like 2wks or 30days, where they'll let ya take it back and you can pull another one. You pay a few dollars more for the warranty at the time of purchase. Plus too many people think they don't need the kick down cables hooked up correctly and that'll cook the trans. Or they have a bad converter thinking it's the trans and the new trans ends up having the same symptoms
Need to drop something just heavy enough on that transmission table to where is makes a slight bowl... just enough for the oil to pool in the center... rather than on your crotch. Drill a hole in the center of the puddle, put a oil pan underneath.... mabye build it to where you can slide the oil pan directly under the top of the table to where you can still store stuff below the table
I have heard so many people say they dont service or worry about the transmission in their car ,they just focus on the motor and thats a major mistake , the trans is equally important, cuz when it dies its big $$$$$$ to fix , i change the trans fluid every other oil chang and also the trans filter and the engine oil filter . Plus i got a bigger trans coolers on my trucks and a trans temp guage .... itll save u from a disaster when work or towin your boat
Funny I just did a 44re the band did delaminate but everything you say is exactly what happens most the time the one way check valve is the calperate Your a stand up dude not to many around like you👍
The overdrive was off another vehicle that thing was laying in the dirt. Been doing transmissions 20 plus years. If the cooler is stopped up it will cook planetary gears as well or at least very bad bushing wear. Like bad to where a non transmission builder can see it. You got to mark your stuff. Punch set at harbor freight is like 20 bucks
We have a 2005 jeep grand Cherokee it has the i think 5.7 and is all-time 4X4. Well it started acting funny and Overdrive would just turn itself off and say high temp despite it wasn't overheating at all. So over months finally one day we was pulling the mountain "paved road highway" but its a good hill. It just bucked. Like what i imagine it would feel like on a horse. It kinda felt like the front tires locked for a split second. Regardless got it home and transmission was shot. We knew a guy selling a good jeep but needed a motor so we bought it and swapped the transmission. Well now it slips sometimes. You put it in drive and itll kinda jerk but then goes on. You can fly down the highway just fine but its just when you first get it in gear and sometimes you gotta roll to get it in reverse. It doesn't make sense tho that it worked fine and then you put it in ours and bam it has issue. We dont care we still drive it and will drive it until it blows up but its definitely made me scared of transmissions. I don't think i will ever go through that headache again. **the reason i don't know the specifics is because its my moms jeep. I loved that jeep and its a beast in the snow but sadly once the transmission started acting up it just ruined my faith in them
Aw4 in my 98’ has 250k, wife drove it manually shifting for 2 yrs before I started driving it and put a set of solenoids in it. Shifts perfect! They should have just used it in all jeeps!
As a neighborhood mechanic i had a customer with a no start condition 1 month after spending $4k and 4 months at a shop to fix a no start condition. The shop said they replaced the wiring harness but 1 month later the vehicle was back to no start condition. This is in the winter with me crawling in a dirt driveway in the snow, same day the customer had to drive to the airport to catch a flight. Took me 1 hour on my day off to diagnose the problem as a bad connection to the starter motor, completly corroded. I replaced the spade connectors and charged my customer $50. I charged $50 because i considered the fix i did was or should be common knowledge, it is for me and i'm a cook not a mechanic. So yeah, some driveway mechanics charge so little because they think a monkey should be able to do the job that's not their primary job, it's common sense. But my dad was a neighhood mechanic by request, electrical engineer professionally, so what do i know, obviously not how to charge for my expertise. Please don't disparage my contributions to my community as a driveway mechanic. Thank you.
I had to paid for rebuilds on to different trans on 1997 f350 with E40D and my 2000 f250 with the 4r100 , the e40d was fine but the 4R100 i had him rebuild for me with a triple disc torque converter with billet front cover and updated spag better clutches and shift kit on the valve body , no when i got if back when i drove it the Overdrive shift had a noticable shift flair and he said dont worry about it and would not help me , so i ordered a new valve body and installed my self and WA LA !!!! I FIXED IT , i never used him again , it was benchmark transmission and i wold not recommend using him cuz if i could fix that myself how easy would it be for him to fix it for me and i paid $3800.00 , i need a built trans cuz i tow heavyweight loads for my tree business . Anyway great video , i like your honesty...
Dex, on the 04 WJ 4x4... the overdrive is starting to kick and buck in and out of gear... or so it seems. Would there be a sensor or whatnot that controls that? I'm stumped and lack any serious knowledge. 🤷♂
I can tell you two stories I bought a Dodge Intrepid a 1997 had 168,000 mi on it everything was original month later the transmission started slipping a local place wanted to replace the transmission I brought it home and hooked it up to an air compressor and flushed out all the fluid changed everything put a new filter in and new speed sensors that car lasted until 250,000 MI! I had almost the same similar incident with my Chrysler imperial I think shops out there trying to make money! Instead of being honest after that I never took my car anywhere else and did my own work!
You are way to honest, but don't stop what you are doing , God will reward you, as of those others that you sold transmissions to, well God will judge them for lying and dishonesty and not installing the transmission like you told them to.
My guy would not warranty the unit unless he pulled and installed. His reason is to check the vehicle, and also have money to fix any issues that there may be with the unit. This is also is policy with rebuild units.
I've ran 4 different 4.0 Cherokee, 1 4.0 TJ, 1 08 WK 4.7 and never had a transmission problem. I also never ran large tires and they were daily drivers used for backwoods hunting, fishing, offroading, grocery getting etc. Definitely not like DeXJ runs them!😅
#1 Cause of "Worked fine then stopped" is due to improper installation. They blow the pump or Torque Converter by 1. Not ensuring the torque converter is seated properly prior to installation (or it slips off due to handling during installation) 2. Forcing the transmission in/tightening the bolts. #3 is reusing the transmission fluid and not flushing the cooler. I don't blame you at all. Never had an AW4 fail and I deliberately abuse mine. I'm just not an idiot.
I see so much of myself in you. As a tech myself I am always bending over backwards for people and I've stopped it too. I want to do right by people but people f*** it up for everyone else. It's sad.
OKAY I NEED SOME HELP BUDDY IM RUNNING A 1996 jeep GRAND Cherokee has the 242 transfer case and it blew going up hill but can’t see where the fluid came out of. The trans fluid was still at full level and so I got a used transfer case but it was a 249 J got it all put in but my shifting 4x4 linkage doesn’t fit so. 1) is it worth running the 249J in my 96 Jeep grand Cherokee 4.0 I6 2) is there any advice or information you can share with me about how and what I should do after putting a totally different transfer case in?
Giving money back for the installation issues for the installer to learn what they did wrong should not cost you for their learning and new experience. When it cost a person for something they did wrong you learn much faster. I have been in this field for over 40 years and have eaten my misses and have eaten others but now I cover my behind in doing everything only to the job once and not loosing money and lost time that never can be compensated for when older you will see lost and wasted time.
My wife's car was a 2017 jeep patriot it had 20k miles. The vehicle would get stuck in park and we couldn't put it in reverse or drive. The dealership could never troubleshoot it cuz the check engine light was never on. It was a sealed trans with no dip stick so you could never check the fluid level. After multiple trips to the dealership I traded it in and bought a chevy. Terrible experience
I’ve never replaced a transmission before but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Never warranty a customer installed transmission. If they are too cheap to pay a professional they accept all risk.
i’m gonna say something like irisheyes and jfreeman. it’s noble of you to offer warranty on carry outs. some transmission just have issues. i stamped all my units. and have a record of what i did for each unit. even if you are just re selling one out a car. mark it somehow. if you just replace a seal on it. you know what it is and can verify it’s yours.
When I worked as a tech for gm, we had a customer that needed a transmission. We sold him a serta reman trans through parts. Customer said they were totally capable of installing it themselves and declined the repair. Gm offers 3yr/60k warranty. Truck gets towed in 2 days later for “bee transmission won’t go into gear”. Customer impacted the transmission bolts in and never checked that the new torque converter was seated and broke the pump. “Completely capable” 😂 and service manager wanted to warranty stupidity.
The 42re/44re is THE WORSE transmission ever. Seriously. Ive had to rebuild mine like 3 times. Had to come back and add this, the absolute biggest problem I have ever seen with the 42re outside of the cooler being clogged of course, is the OD return passages being clogged up, the valve body being gummed up especially after a failure, or people NOT checking the fluid level correctly and just roasting it to hell
Don't fail to mention the shade trees that would reuse the transmission fluid....yea not a bright idea at all. Youll never make everyone happy.....but you do great business and that itself will speak for itself. Take care Dex! Great video full of knowledge.
Trans shop around here only gives a warrenty if they install them theirself.... and those are fresh rebuilt transmissions
Yupp never give a warranty on used parts. Shop around here will give warranty on rebuilds but never on used ones
I quit doing carry in units years ago (aside from racecar units or other shops I trust). Best choice I ever made.
The last one I had done the shop would only cover warranty if they installed it, and I brought it back for fluid change after like 300 miles.

They pulled it fixed it and reinstalled it on their dime which I was super appreciative of.

where was the shop at?
I need a good shop in the Midwest.
I actually had my wjs 42re blow. That snap ring broke and taking it apart. Everything was burned so I just tossed a new one in. I just learned a whole lot and will be making several changes and might buy another to go through and make good. The current one works but doesn't go into overdrive doing 70mph.
I like this guy but as you can hear, he was just nicked by the Gomer Pyle gene. It grazed him. Anyway, I like these videos, pretty cool.
Is there anyway to to put the lock up converter on a switch? 97 and up XJ.
You should give the 5feet 50seconds warranty. People are taking advantage of you being a nice guy. Used parts should not have a warranty
People take advantage of the no warranty shit all the time by selling broken parts.. A warranty is to keep the consumer safe.
No brainer... No install...no warrantee.. no bullshit. 🎩🌄
Tip also the rear piston housing that bolts to front case make sure use right one it either has 2 holes in it or don't 2 diff types
You have had your fill of Bad customers. You are a hard worker. Good job, sir.
This reminds me of Bad mechanics + Ford (even though Cherokee is Chrysler).
Good video.
Damn I wish you was in Oregon
Good video, thanks for sharing your experiences.
Why would someone who fixes ones own transmissions be taking their car to a transmission shops? 💩
"We offer a concrete warranty!".... soon as your azz is off our concrete, your warranty is up.. Works just fine.
My older coworker called that a outta sight warranty. As soon as you’re outta sight you’re outta warranty 😂
@@iankerr1549ours is 5 minutes or out of sight which ever comes first
I'm a fan of the tail light warranty myself. As in once I can't see your tail lights your warranty is up
Forgot the wave warranty,as soon as I quit waving .
I bet...
You should watch precision transmission on here. Very informative.
You also have to remember most people buying parts from the salvage yard are not the sharpest/good people .
Yo, that is some sound advice.
if the bobcat fits you could use the fork to let you get the weight but still be controlled
@@ethanhallecho personally... I would drop half a cross tie horizontally from around 6'
@@ethanhallecho mabye 4' depending on table bracing
I have heard so many people say they dont service or worry about the transmission in their car ,they just focus on the motor and thats a major mistake , the trans is equally important, cuz when it dies its big $$$$$$ to fix , i change the trans fluid every other oil chang and also the trans filter and the engine oil filter . Plus i got a bigger trans coolers on my trucks and a trans temp guage .... itll save u from a disaster when work or towin your boat
Great content, learning a lot. Might even risk trying a RWD to 4WD AW4 conversion (hint hint).
Funny I just did a 44re the band did delaminate but everything you say is exactly what happens most the time the one way check valve is the calperate Your a stand up dude not to many around like you👍
I think the saying goes " the hump that broke the camels straw"
Great video 👍 The only silver lining to this situation is you can book all your time and parts as a tax write off😊
The overdrive was off another vehicle that thing was laying in the dirt.
Your prices are great. Please start a shop in Florida.
Dex, on the 04 WJ 4x4... the overdrive is starting to kick and buck in and out of gear... or so it seems.
Would there be a sensor or whatnot that controls that? I'm stumped and lack any serious knowledge. 🤷♂
Most people don't flush out there coolers before putting in good trans.
I wish you were located in Washington. We have a jeep parts monopoly in this area and prices are ridiculous for dam near anything.
This is also is policy with rebuild units.
every field has a challenge ,learn as u go.just dont go broke in the process
Either that's one really strong impact or those pump bolts were loose. Probably why it worked for a minute. I torque them to 17 ft. lbs.
Great video. You're a good man
I see so much of myself in you.
The worst of jobs I’ve been involved in generated from trying my best to help someone out so they could save money.
Damn your giving em away. As I have got older I pick and choose what I do now.
Do a small engraving on your transmissions that you sell ❤
