This is the best treatment anyone has ever given Tamiya's LRDG on youtube, really first class video. Thanks for sharing your techniques, the white / yellow oil wash worked great for me. On mine, I ended up drilling out the solid headlight and putting a clear lense in, I scratch built the fuel can boxes on the running board and fitting the more detailed cans from Bronco's British Field Accessories kit. I put slings on the rifles and replaced some of the decals with custom made ones. I plan on putting the Lewis on a different mount and fitting a Vickers heavy mg on the pedestal.
Always nice to see someone who does it better than I do.Still learning after all these years.I need this model to go with my Tamiya SAS jeep.Great job.
Oh man, this kit has been on my `bench` for approx 6 months, half completed, just staring at me everyday, pleading to be weathered and detailed. I now have some ideas.
Such a good job, painting this kit - weathering is such a necessary part of making a model. I think that most are overdone, and I just love videos of model shows and all the jaw-dropping results of all that patient work. I can remember building this when it first became available, many years ago; weathering wasn't a thing I considered. It was the color of Gulden's mustard - a very eye-catching camouflage brownish yellow. It's the exact same kit, but the current standards for weathering make this one look very different(and MUCH better)! Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks Steve! Finally got this uploaded after a lot of trouble with the video. Glad you liked the worn effects, I had a lot of fun making this thing look used and dusty
Your attention to the details is mesmerising 😳 just a superb build from start to finish. Thank you for your paint guid too, really useful info. Can’t wait to see what’s up next. Thank you again for sharing your awesome builds with us, really inspirational stuff 😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Kenneth! Pleased to hear you enjoyed the video and find the information useful. More will be coming for sure but my lips are sealed on what just yet... Hope you enjoy my other videos too!
You have exceptional skill and patience. Remarkable work. A suggestion for a video theme: Build a series of dioramas depicting an early WW2 vehicle, preferably Nazi, perhaps something like a Panzerspahwagen, at first like-new, as it would have appeared in review before Hitler in late '30's Berlin. Then -- age it, slowly, over time. Show it as it might have appeared, say, invading Poland, or France, worn but still proud. Then the same vehicle in the deserts of North Africa, even more scarred and damaged but still functional, only to be evacuated to Sicily or Italy, battered but defiant. Finally, show it broken and spent, thrown into the collapsing defense of the Fatherland.
Have you considered upping your damage and weathering? Dented hoods and tailgates, bullet/shrapnel holes, bent bumpers and twisted grills. A vehicle/aircraft on its last legs would be absolutely INCREDIBLE.
Yes actually. I might have a go at a diorama or something with a worn out or burnt vehicle alongside some sort of armor kit. Not sure what yet but it will let me use limitless artistic license! thanks for the inspiration too!
fantastic build,i built mine a couple of years ago, only issue is the tyres, they will split which ruins the finished kit.,other than that this kit still stands up by todays standards.
Excellent work as usual.👍 I have this kit myself and this video has inspired me to dig it out, although I have a snowball's hope in hell of coming anywhere close to your skills! 😀 I also have to add my voice to the chorus of disapproval of the music though - I muted it a couple of minutes in. Perhaps something more easy on the ear next time? 🙏
Thank you! Figured aren't my thing (or at least I don't think do since I've never done them) but I have kept them aside if I decide to make a diorama to include them
Great work brother!! As always, killer build! Really enjoyed this one, especially the weathering. I appreciate videos like this that aren't just entertaining but teach me something about how I can build better. Thanks. (PS. as a friendly piece of feedback, the music selection was not my favorite).
Great job! One minor observation though. Having spent far too much time in the desert, I know from experience that those canvas rolls on the wings would be covered in dust, especially deep in the folds. Otherwise, fantastic - well done sir!
Thank you. And yes I suppose so but I wanted to show and retain how to detail such items using the oils etc. I guess we could say these ones were newly washed and supplied to the team 😉
Are they still producing these? I had one but donated it to my local IPMS chapter when I left town. I wanted to build it and put it next to my SAS Jeep. Great company!
Good idea. Its nice to add these little details on to make the model look more lives in isn't it. An idea I'll use in another model. Thanks for watching:)
Only thought why it popped up is recent BBC series on SAS: Rogue Heroes and reading up on Long Range Desert Patrol Group. Having spent childhood on backside of Sahara Desert, there is one thing missing which might go into the diarama you hint at in a reply to a comment - the sand. Would some fine dried paving sand be correct scale to blow over the whole thing to get grains stuck in crevices? In real life, it's a thing that you just can't remove completely
As a Kiwi I'm so glad to see your amazing work on this kit. Its a real stunner Mate! Sadly your timing with this build is quite appropriate with the recent passing of Norman Gedye, New Zealand's last surviving veteran of the LRDG. Who passed away on the 21st of December 2018 at the age of 98. And quite benefiting Norman, his coffin was transported away from his funeral on a 1942 Chevrolet in the colours of the LRDG. Here is the article about Norman's life www.stuff.co.nz/national/109667134/long-range-desert-group-veteran-norman-gedye-dies
Great model I can remember making the SAS Pink Panther Landrover model many years ago. One question why didn't you include the figures? Keep up the good work stay safe and best wishes from NZ.
Figures aren't really my thing but I have saved them in the spares box. I plan to bring this model back along with my Matilda to make some sort of desert scene so the figures can be used there. Thank you and thanks for watching :)
I'm debating whether to get this kit or not. If I did it would be done civilian. Love those flared guards. Any suggestions as to which cab would be the closest fit & look the part? I'm leaning towards Ford 3t but I don't have the Chev to measure. (Ford parts on a Chev can only improve it IMO:-).
One Improvement, the rear mudflaps would be scratched to hell and the black would be apparent, also lateral cracks in the paint where they bend back over rocks, otherwise top job.
Really enjoy your videos, extremely helpful! I also appreciate your use and knowledge of Tamiya paint as that is what I use as well. One question, when applying the "Worn Effects" do you thin it out at all? Thanks, Jim
Thanks Jim! The worn effects isnt thinned in any way, just straight out of the pot. I suppose it could be thinned with acrylic thinner but I've not tried it since I've not needed to
I don't understand how all you guys get away with using artist's oils. We couldn't afford the Humbrol enamel paints so I tried it in the early 70's on an Airfix Stuka and the stuff just wouldn't dry on a plastic kit! Ended up throwing it in a bin after 3 weeks of waiting having wasted a month's worth of pocket money to buy the kit, not sure I've forgiven my mum for making me bin it yet :)
I'm assembling the tamiya SAS jeep and I believe is the same dessert paint scheme... the instructions call for a flat dark yellow, but you use buff as the main color.. Is the dark yellow too yellow?? I haven't painted mine yet.. trying to decide what looks best..
Cool! I hope its going well so far. Yes using reference photos and a bit of imagination the dark yellow seemd to strong of colour so I used the buff instead. I think the more subtle tone looks more realistic and bleached compared to the instructed yellow.
It looks really good except for one thing. Tire wear. How did that thing get so well used and still have perfect tread patterns? I can tell you from experience, driving around in the sand all day will definitely leave you with bald tires.
Great job but too tidy, the body needs scratches, dents, rust, a bent front bumper and a couple of bullets holes. Also at the back needs some improvisation and mess. Please, don't get me wrong, you did a great job but too by the book for me...
Have you done one? The bumper is shorter on the driver's side and has been altered, you had to be sharp to be see it but when the sprues were shown with their parts the bumper was an even length on both sides. Along with some serious scraping damage on the driver's front wing. To put a 7.92mm German bullet hole in the vehicle would require a heated darning needle to be pushed through the plastic and then moved around to increase the hole size any where from 2mm to 2.5mm if you're going to do it to scale, and the house will smell acrid for a bit. However I do agree with you and Shui Ki Cheung that if it was on an operation there would be plenty of fuel jerry cans and water jerry cans painted with a white cross them. Then there would be boxes of ammo, rat packs and Lewes's bombs.
Well done !Amazing model!S.A.S. ran into Northern Africa Sahara desert!?The main target was saving hitting warplane' pilots!Sir your model no water tanks cannot survive in desert?
@@soneyliston7902 Well in sorry to hear that, I hope my future builds can be enough for you to return to the channel and subscribe once more. I admit the music was not my best choice on this one and will stay clear of this type for all new videos
I don't see myself as a figure painter and feel that the majority of my viewers are more interested in the vehicle and weathering processes I use rather than the figures. However I have saved the figure sprue for future use if people feel they want to see me work on them :) I need some practice first though before I release a video for people to rip to shreds...
Great job on this kit, no matter how old some of these Tamiya kits are people still enjoy building them.
Your LRDG Chevy is an unique piece of jewelry! Marvelous! 👍

Very nice job! Impeccable painting, weathering and details. So much to learn and, as always, looking forward to the next one. 👌👍👏
Outstanding!!!! A Beautyful Artwork as Always...!!!! I wish i had those skills!!! :)
Great! Love Command Cars!
Got tons of photos of these vintage and new usually 3 or 4 of these at Armistice day in Cambridge in NZ every year
I don't remember this one, and it's the sort of thing I would definitely have made back in the day!
Yeah, I didn't care for the music as well and had to mute music... oh man that was so hard to do.LOL. Great video and excellent finished model.
Wow. Great job again Matt !! Worn affect is fantastic, and the weathering on the sand ladders is awsome. Glad you enjoyed it mate 👍
Thanks Steve! Finally got this uploaded after a lot of trouble with the video. Glad you liked the worn effects, I had a lot of fun making this thing look used and dusty
