  • This member of the Ericaceae family is compact, evergreen and edible. It makes the perfect privacy hedge, and offers a really nice little fruit too (but I'll admit, it's kind of starchy and bland at first, the aftertaste is nice though haha). The fruits are extremely high in important vitamins such as beta-carotene and omega 6 fatty acids. the blooms are hermaphroditic in nature meaning that you only require one tree to get fruit! They're primarily pollinated by bees, although some flies assist as well. The blooms have a really mild sweet smell that I personally think is comparable to chai. The fruit are about 5 cm in height from base to stem, and about 2.5 cm wide. They ripen to a beautiful yellow colour at first, with a more tart flavour profile, and then mature to a beautiful strawberry red. This plant feeds a lot of our local bird population. It is native to Mediterranean climates spanning from Morocco to Libya in Africa, and the eastern Iberian Peninsula to Asia Minor in Europe. This plant has been naturalized in many of the british isles, and virtually all Mediterranean islands. It is now seen in many parts of the Cascadian coastline too. This plant likes partial shade, slightly acidic soil with exceptional drainage and lots of humus. This tree, in my observation, fruits at random times of the year where there is a cold snap. One of my buddies told me that it fruits in Late winter, which I have seen before, but another one of my friends was confident that it fruits in the fall. So I suppose the fruiting season is more correlated to your local climate. This tree is not related to Strawberries (Fragaria spp.) This plant has beautiful exfoliating orange-yellow-red-brown bark too. I highly recommend you check out this little dense tree, t has a lot to offer all year round. This tree is most effectively propagated using air layering, and is quite successful too this way, but be patient, it takes a season or two to root! Stay blessed you guys and thank you for the support :) I hope I taught you something interesting ♡

    Great video about my favourite tree. Thanks for sharing.
    This tree is called Madroño here and it's part of the emblem of our city.
    It's the only tree I know of that has new flowers and ripe fruits at the same time. That's why it grows fruits twice a year, in autumn and spring.
    Saludos from Madrid, Spain!

    I have 5 of these seedlings now growing in my yard, I didn't plant them so I figure a bird of squirrel must have planted them.

    Can you grow them from cuttings-??

    • @maxzytaruk8558
      @maxzytaruk8558  Рік тому +2

      Hey, Bobby, not the easier plants to grow from cuttings, but you can try! For this plant I highly recommend (seriously can't recommend enough) using a rooting hormone, especially if the plant material is mature. I also really recommend putting some type of plastic or cloche over top of it to maintain humidity. Best of luck! It's more than possible, just takes a long time.

    I bought a supposed grecian strawberry tree (arbutus andrachne) from someone online but now I'm not sure if it's the arbutus andrachne one or the arbutus unedo one, because they both look very similar in terms of leaf shape, fruit, etc. and lots of people get it mixed up - especially with the red coloured yangmei fruits which also look similar in fruit appearance to the strawberry trees, but is a different tree entirely.

    Any idea of where I should go to buy strawberry extract ? It’s used for medicinal purposes. The extract is done from the fruit

    my Strawberry Tree leaves turning yellow, this last few weeks. planted 8 months ago. must need fert. in hot area of northern California, but cool air much of time, near SF bay... what type fert?

    • @maxzytaruk8558

      Hey there! Just saw this sorry, I would definitely recommend any all purpose fertilizer targeted at Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Pieris. This plant has many similar requirements to those plants.I would start applying the fertilizer at half dilution for the first 3 applications, to avoid plant shock. Definitely go for a liquid feed rather than a granular solid fertilizer, as those are too slow-release and wont help out your bush in the short term. I recommend vigoro brand and G&B organics if theyre available where you live. Best of luck eh🍀

    I took some branches from a tree here in Spain, flowering and fruiting. I am trying to get it rooted..Any tips??

    • @maxzytaruk8558
      @maxzytaruk8558  Рік тому

      Ooh and you got them fruiting cool! Theyre kind of finicky, I would scar the bottom inch or so of the branches with a pocket knife or something like that, drawing a few lines vertically up the stem, then I'd dip it in a rooting hormone, ROOTS brand is a good one, and then put it in a pot damp peat moss and wrap the whole thing in plastic wrap or a larg clear bag, definitely keep it warm and be patient, they're hard to propagate that way, but you got this!🍀

      Maybe even thin down some of the flowers too, sounds painful but they're sucking up so much energy from the root zone

      Hey Ren! I've noticed that too. Noticed that on a few other hardy woody shrubs, California lilacs and Ninebarks too, I think it's a combo of that flood we had in November, followed by the heat dome of 2021, it's also been unseasonably cold lately, an extra shock to them! I hope they come back, but they're definitely in the decline here, as are Rhododendrons and other Arbutus :/

      Could also be a type of fire blight, maybe an Erwinia bacteria disease of some sort:/

      Heyyyy! Yo sorry for taking so long to respond, I didnt see this comment until now haha. That's an excellent question! I think it has something to do with the texture of the fruit and the smell, but I'm not quite sure. I hope you have a wonderful day, and I look forward to watching your Citrus thrive :)))♡♡♡

    I was hoping for the "how to grow" part of the title to kick in at some point.....
    I just got seeds for this tree.

    • @maxzytaruk8558

      Hey there, my apologies I was looking at it under a nursery liner - pre existing bush perspective. From seed, if I were you I would soak them first in cold water for a day. Then it's a good idea to refrigerate them for some time, likely over a month, this "vernalizes" them. Basically tells the seeds winter has passed. When the seed coats get soft and wrinkled, Sprinkle them over a seed-starting mix, I think any generic potting mix would work. Cover them with about half an inch of soil. They don't like being planted deeply at all. These plants are very slow from what I've seen. A good friend of mine said they took 3 weeks to sprout any sizeable growth. Then it's a good idea to transplant once the saplings are over 5 inches or so tall, a 1:1:1 mix of sand, gravel, and peat works well, you can substitute gravel for coarse bark or vermiculite. Hope that helps eh!
