  • We are pitting two of Mesa/Boogies british inspired heavy weights against each other in this comparison video. Both amps were running through the same 2x12 cabinet, vintage 30 speaker mic'ed with a Royer R-121.

    The Royal Atlantic is more mid focused, it has a much tighter low end, and cuts a little better. The Electra Dyne has a nice top end sizzle and is a fatter tone over all. The difference is more evident when you hear them live. I currently have the Electra Dyne but plan on also getting the Royal Atlantic, then I would run them in stereo and get the best of both worlds!

    The RA-100 sounded nicer... and I put that down to the settings dialled in on the Electra Dyne. I have both amps these days and the Electra Dyne really is similar IMO. BTW I have heads and use exactly the same speaker cabs so I guess that helps with my analysis somewhat. However the RA-100 benefits from those attenuators... and for me those swing the choice of amp of the two towards the RA-100. Seems they are discontinued these days... and that's a pity as they are both cool amps for sure.

      They're still listed on Mesa Boogie's website, so I don't think they're discontinued. I also saw one just yesterday for sale at a local music store.

      SmalltoFace I have it confirmed they are now discontinued (at least the head is). In any case I bought one that needed a little work and now its running great so Ill be reviewing that on my channel ua-cam.com/users/tonymckenzie.com

    Wow the Electra Dyne sounds so much fatter and a little darker! The Royal Atlantic is much thinner sounding. I think the Electra Dyne with a nice tube screamer would be sick.

    Great video- Exactly the comparison I have been waiting for!
    I really gotta try out the RA series, but these videos make it sound so trebley!
    My Electradyne sounds a lot clearer than this when playing live and I use an OD to spice it up for higher gain, but its WAY thicker than anything else I've tried!
    Both seem like great amps

    I think I like the RA better in this video, though I really did like the ED when I played one. Great video as always, Don!

    The RA sounded brighter, punchier. The ED sounds like a modded 800 Marshall. If i had to choose i would pick both, both sounds are extremely useful in the studio!

    I agree that the Electra-Dyne sounded too dark in comparison, but the way he has them EQ'd could be part of it. I would raise the mids a little more. You can't go wrong with either. The Royal Atlantic sounds fantastic here, though.

  • @danyeo
    @danyeo 13 років тому +1

    @Kalenorr The ED sounds a lot bitey when the mid is raised past noon. I never run it any lower than that, when it raise that knob, it takes the blanket off the tone.

  • @haggertysmusic
    @haggertysmusic  12 років тому +1

    @filip5150 The amp was cranked up quite loud in the video, but in retrospect I would have run the mids higher than what I did on the Electra Dyne.

    Great comparison, how good does the RA sound on bedroom volume?

  • @haggertysmusic
    @haggertysmusic  12 років тому +1

    @bornburied Nah. The ED head is $1699 and the RA head is $1899, so only $200 difference, and they are really two different sounding amps targeting two different kinds of players.

    Electradyne is a killer amp...very simple but packed with features and awesome sound like all boogies....the boogiePRS marriage is just my thing. I love the marshall Gibson marriage as well....dam y cant i have both....

    Don, you tend to play either a PRS SC58, PRS Custom 24 or some type of Suhr... in your opinion which is the best... I personally own a 2011 PRS Custom 24 and would love an SC58 but still think a true Gibson Les Paul Trad is the way to go. In the market for a new axe and trust your opinion... should I take a look at a Suhr if I am in the market for a sub $4,000 guitar? A response would be much appreciated. Thanks for the videos!!!

  • @haggertysmusic
    @haggertysmusic  12 років тому

    @tedroneous Suhr's are personally my favorite guitars on the planet, but that's just a personal opinion. I own a Les Paul too that's great, but I think you need to heavily mod one to get it in the same ballpark as the SC58. You can definitely get a Suhr under $4K, but they really have a different sound when compared to a LP or PRS.

    i own both.dyne with 1x12 and royal with 2x12.you can get a very close sound in both ,but its the speaker and how much you tweek that changes it.And the royal el34 gives great sound ,but then the dyne is very close as well. power soak is the thing.,its nice too be loud ,but with is a great function. buy the way alot of my tone is in my hands,and you dont need to mess alot with these amps to find the sweet spot .the royal threw a quad is the sound.but the combo is loud,very loud.

  • @danyeo

    The mid on the Electra Dyne should have been set on at least 7. When it's set low like he had it in the video it does sound muddy.

  • @addictedtogear

    I own an Electra Dyne and loved it till I heard the Landry amps! Just awesome tone! I'm just about ready to sell my Mesa...

  • @TooManyInerests
    @TooManyInerests 12 років тому +1

    I also own an Electra Dyne, and it's never sounded as muddy as this guy makes it sound...I always play with the mids up around 2:00 though which really opens everything up. The RA amp was alright too, but a bit "Marshally" for me...imagine having an amp with no Presence control to tame those shrills...yikes.
    My ED with a Wampler Ecstasy is all I need :)

      Interesting. Given this comment is 5 years ago, do you still have the ED? I'm thinking of getting one soon, and I also have a Wampler Ecstasy (now euphoria) Can the Wampler be used to make it gainier for metal applications, or do you use it in a different way?

    Do all Mesa Boogie amps have a British clean tone?

  • @Bieling3
    @Bieling3 12 років тому

    Royal Atlantic does sound almost, somewhat, Marsallesque here, the Electra Dyne sounds like the typical muddy Mesa. Could just be the mic placement, eq-ing, or some other factor, but that's the impression I get.

    EQ drive on this video is lie - i have royal combo 2x12 and for the normal good drive sound like on this video i have to put treble on minimum and bass on full...
    i dont get it how u recorded this video but its not normal sound of this amp.

    • @samroney6644
      @samroney6644 7 років тому

      they did it at very low volumes. the amps react differently there. The Dyne didn't sound like a dyne either

    To me the Electra Dyne sounds like a muddier version of the Royal Atlantic. RA-100 has my vote an I am hoping to get one soon.

    • @Psyfonify
      @Psyfonify 8 років тому

      +vballmusicGod It's the way they are dialed. For example they are basically the same amp and in my experience this amp opens up a lot more with a louder master and lower pregain to compensate the increase in power tube saturation from a higher master. They have the master louder on the royal atlantic which is opening it up a lot more.

    • @samroney6644
      @samroney6644 7 років тому +2

      they dont have the dyne dialed in properly. I know this is an old comment, but I just tried both side by side today, and the Dyne was actually far LESS muddy, and had more of that "raw-ness" that the early Marshalls had.

    • @samroney6644
      @samroney6644 7 років тому +1

      not remotely the same amp. actually, two very different approaches to achieve the same goal... a combination of british crunch and american clean. check out the design layout and you'll see a variety of differences. The dyne sounds far better in person than the RA, IMO, and this demo didn't even sound like the dyne much. sounds like it was done at low volume, where the RA has the edge with its built in attenuator. The ED shines when it is on 90 watts using the simul-class (1 pair in AB + 1 pair in extended A), and above 9:00 on the MV. I picked the ED after an in person A/B session

    • @Psyfonify
      @Psyfonify 7 років тому +1

      on the other hand, 45 watts, master at 2 o'clock, and preamp at 1 or noon, with el-34 tubes, is great for one channel fuzzy stoner rock. one channel cause the clean channels gonna sound poop now.

      @@samroney6644 do you still have your Electradyne?
      In UA-cam videos I love their cleans but cannot find one with good Marshall tones...I cannot stand JCM800 grunty tones, and far prefer juicy JMP tones.
      I wanted to love the Electradyne because of its cleans but not if the lead tone is weak and dark.

  • @OperationEndGame

    I think the RA can cut through the mix better than the Electra Dyne.

    • @samroney6644
      @samroney6644 7 років тому +1

      not in my experience. that video was done at low volume. at gig volume, the RA was muddier and fizzier, where the ED cut through like a gut punch from George Foreman. Just realized how old this comment I'm replying to is :-)
