I like the mind games this show brings out. Yes a lot of them are pretty easy to piece together but still a big improvement from just pure action shows for my personal enjoyment.
As a Light Novel reader I am honestly quite happy with this first episode, no major cuts, fine animation and bringing back some context that was cut in previous seasons (Others will still cry about some of the cuts, but with sadly only 13 episodes this is better than expectet). For anyone wondering what was cut I will sum up the most important stuff (I dont might not recall everything but at least the interesting stuff, also some things might just be shown later to fit the flow of the anime, so I will only mention what should have happened and cant be brought up later). 1. The explanation for the test is cut down immensely as well as organisational stuff. Non of it is game changing and smaller details like that they have to give away their phones was added through side character dialogue. 2. The group forming was completely cut. When they arrived they originally would have had a nice little mindgame of who to group with whom as they had to decide that as a school year. This event would have shown some of the group dynamics that were formed in the last to seasons like the Ayanokoji group (Hasebe, Sakura etc) or the now Class D without a leader. Additionally it would have given Katsuragi from Class A some more dialogue further showing the divide of the class due to his rivalry with Sakayanagi but nearly all of Katsuragi is cut all the time anyways so I kinda it would happen again (still kinda sucks since he is an actually very well developed character in the novel). The second thing missing because of this is everyonea reaction to Ryuens sudden step down as a leader. Since no one knows what actually happened most of them think it is just another one of Ryuens ploys. To the outside Class D claims that Ishizaki (the goon you laughed about) took him down in a fight. 3. Not a cut in this episode but season 2. Manabu should have had two more appearences before this (one being a talk with Koji), which would have explained his position as well as forshadowed the trouble he would pose in the future. Manabu would have also brought forth his request and concern about Manabu last season. (Cut Funfact: Katsuragi wanted to join the councel but was rejected by Manabu (of course it was lol) 3.5. Just wanted to mention that I am glad that Hashimotos dialogue (blond Class A guy with earrings) was kept in since he is one of my favorites and dialogue and character info that isnt iummediately relevant is oftentimes cut. 4. The lessons were cut down immensly. They would have once again not added anything major but shown of characterisation and character dynamics (A trend continued since Season 1) 5. The scene between Ichinose, Mai and Hiori was originally relayed to Koji by Kei 6. Sakayanagi suddenly switching targets to Class B after her big anouncenment last season might seem weird as anime only but in the novel her declaration of war against Koji happended in Season 2 Episode 6 so there was way more time inbetween in the novel. 7. The talk with Manabu was a bit different in the novel since Manabu had already asked for Kojis help in earlier volumes but Koji had declined. Because of that he didnt explain the situation to him originally. Another thing that didnt happen was Kiriyamas introduction. This should have happened in S2 Episode 12 (the same episode where he should have met Manabu). Kiriyama did not appear in this arc at all. Still glad they did not cut out all this stuff but simply moved it to a later point eventhough it now feels a bit sudden in the anime while it seemed inavitable in the novel. And thats all I remember (There is some other stuff but that could be added later so I wont mention it yet). Nothing major or game changing was cut but just tons of characterisation. The episode was still very fun and I hope they continue like this eventhough I would like a bit more of the daily life of which we most of the time see nothing in the anime.
I hope the production isn't that fuckt after the delay! Good looking first ep for the 2d corrections but cgi Bus is ok And the direction and storyboard is just okay mostlikely the focus is on the last eps for the production in that context. I fucking love the op its creative
It's really a shame that this show is so incredibly difficult to adapt from the light novel, a lot of content is skipped, half of the explanations ( a big part being 40/100 of Ayanakoji's thoughts) are not adapted as well which is problematic because sometimes you think that it's just bad plot armor when in fact if you were to peer into Ayanakoji's thoughts everything has been forsahdowed. Well in the first two seasons it's only visible sometimes and they are still good but incredibely poor compared to the light novel, I am worried that if they don't find a way to show the inner thoughts of important characters it might become worse for latter seasons though.
