The story is that the series was canceled because the studio executives decided to get personally involved with the production of the TV series. When SMASH started to become a hit in the first season, studio executives wanted to cash in on the show's popularity and started to interfere with Theresa Rebeck's work on the series. being that she created it and that she knew a lot about Broadway musicals, they started to actively interfere with the show because they wanted to turn it into another "Glee". Unfortunately, Rebeck left the series before the second season began production and it sank the ratings for the show. Should be proof that studio executives need to stay away from the production of the shows their studio is producing. Instead, they lost out and fans of the show dumped it. It was one of the few shows that I watched religiously and is another reason why I do not watch live television anymore. I just download the torrent of a show, if I want to watch it.
I agree with you. A scripted TV show about Broadway life had never been done before Smash came along. It definitely was a favorite among Broadway/ theater fans.
Yup😢 and I hated it. Finally a show my mom loved with me that was a musical and 2nd season she said she just simply couldn’t. And I felt that way but still had to do it, as a Broadway 🎭 nerd / actress (not Broadway - I wish)
This is not entirely true. Season 1 was okay but it had awful ratings. It did have a cult following but nowhere near numbers that could sustain it. Season 2 was much worse but it’s not like Season 1 numbers would have prevented the show from getting cancelled. The songs were mostly good, but the rest of the show was god-awful partly because of its focus on poorly-written personal drama rather than show biz and partly because pretending that McPhee was a better Marilyn than Hilty never made sense which alienated viewers and made a lot of people dislike McPhee. McPhee knocked it out of the part with the pop pieces and 20th century Fox but she could not embody Marilyn the way Hilty could, especially when it came to performing music as Marylin. Even Messing who is usually well-liked was just insufferable here due to the awful writing. Her whole family sucked, the pervy director sucked, the indecisive music writer’s entire story sucked, the way McPhee’s character treated her boyfriend sucked, the boyfriend sucked too and the way Ivy was treated for seemingly no reason also sucked. And then there was Ellis (not sure if that’s his name the assistant guy) who is still on many “worst characters” lists nearly 20 years later. I still listen to the music to this day because it was the very best part of this experience, but I have never felt the urge to re-watch the actual show.
@@Theheadless1858this is an incredibly on point description. It’s been years but this nails all the elements I remember being being good and terrible (unfortunately many of the later), and some aspects I’d even forgotten lol.
Me encanta serie, en especial el lugar de Times Square que con sus luces te hace olvidar cualquier cosa..... me gusta el mensaje que salud! y adelante, las actrices , cantantes son espectaculares... las dos Marylins
I wish they had just let them become friends, the two main lead women of the show did not always need to be at each other’s throats. It would have been so much better if they had let their relationship end on a good note, rather than having Ivy sleep with Karen’s fiancé. They had better chemistry than any of the men on this show. It was more entertaining watching them get along than watching them with any of the guys.
I agree. People think Hollywood and Broadway has to be this harsh world where everyone is backstabbing each other to get noticed. But I always tell everyone who comes at me with that attitude. “No, you can’t compete with me. I want you to win too.” Yeah, we’re trying to outdo each other to get a part. But we should help each other get better and be happy for each other once that cast list goes up. You want the same part part as me? Earn it by being more talented and ready than me. Don’t stab me in the back to get it. Ivy and Karen could have done a whole friendship arch that way.
Just goes to show that had they run into each other under different circumstances, they would have been great friends. Ivy may have even taken Karen under her wing and showed her the ropes. In my head after Ivy won the Tony, they made a mends.
I wish this show never got cancelled I loved it !
I LOVE their chemistry! I would love it if they did another project together!
