Great synopsis of your early impressions, Josh. I really like the idea of you doing more videos like this. Reviewing products after 6 months, in my opinion, means you're giving us way better input as you've used the product for a much longer time than most reviewers would. However, it also means you're usually the last to put out a review, so I really appreciate hearing your early thoughts.

I like your point about the “iPad like lockdown” that is my biggest reservation since I have never been able to use the iPad for work due to so many limitations (no command line, windowing limitations, no side loading eg so many Mac apps that are not in the store but are well known applications need for my work could be the same for iPad). That red faced look I remember getting when I had my Quest 1 as that was a heavy bit of kit on the front of my face , hopefully some 3rd party companies with come up with a fix for this , what ever people may say about the Quest 3 if you put an elite strap on it you can wear it all day and not feel discomfort

I will not be returning mine. It is exactly what I have been looking for. Basic media consumption and Internet.
I want to note something that I'm noticing... A lot of people returning it also are pretty open about the fact that they have very active lives that require a lot of attention to other things like kids and a partner or such. For myself I live alone, have no partner and no kids all by choice. I HEAVILY value my alone time and tailor my non-working hours to being alone. Vision Pro is INCREDIBLE for someone like me who can literally tune the world out even more and just "go away" for a while and consume what I want... I can't help but feel that people who are returning it are doing so because they are constantly pulled away from it (or anything like it) do to family things or needing their attention elsewhere, and thus since they aren't immersed, their opinion gradually goes down.
It's not a catch all device, and let's face it it's basically a really expensive public beta. However, I love it. I love the immersion and quickly got use to the controls. My only REAL gripe right now is the lack of official apps, but I feel that's gonna come with time.

I appreciate your balanced review. I have a Vision Pro and for me going up to a larger sized light shield made my experience so much more comfortable. I went from having discomfort after about an hour or two to being able to wear it for 10 hours with no problems. Ditto, I had no issues whatsoever. Now the cursor doesn’t flow across the screen to the other app. You glance at the other app to activate it and the typical cursor you’d get on an iPad would appear within that app. Move your eyes to another app and the cursor will reappear over there. Go back to the Mac and the mouse returns.

Excellent 2-week review, and your experiences largely match my own. However, at 3:20 you mention that you can't move the mouse cursor from the Mac Virtual Desktop (MVD) into any of the floating visionOS windows, but you actually can! It changes over to the iPadOS-style "circle" pointer, but it does work (and it's uncanny how the integrated systems can handle going to windows that are above or below the MVD, and not just left or right). I know that I needed to re-enable Universal Control on my own Mac to get it to work, so that may be the case for you, too. On your Mac, go into System Settings → Displays → Advanced... and make sure at least the first two switches under "Link to Mac or iPad" are enabled. That should allow you to use Universal Control for the mouse and keyboard between the MVD and visionOS windows.

    • @6MonthsLater
      @6MonthsLater  3 місяці тому +2

Hey thanks for pointing that out! I've got the settings enabled on the Mac already but going to try unchecking then rechecking them and then restarting everything to see if that fixes my issue. Originally the keyboard thing didn't work for me either, so I'm wondering if I just encountered a bug with the mouse too. - Josh

AVP "Spatial Video" is just traditional 3D video in top/bottom format (the left image is above the right image) and they work on the Quest as well.
The reason the ones taken on the iPhone 15 seem inferiour is because stereoscopic images work best when the two cameras taking the left and right image are about the same distance apart as your eyes are to capture the right amount of parallax - and the iPhone is using two of the cameras that are pretty close together, then doing on the fly correction to simulate a wider separation.
The cameras on the AVP are much farther aoart to make 3D passthrough seem at least close to correct.... which is why movies taken with the AVP seems more realistic and 3D.
Sidenote: there are LOTS of real 3D cameras like the Fujipix 3D W3 camera that can take excellent 3D snapshots and movies and they've been around for over a decade.

But I imagine people will be happier to buy at the higher prices in a few years ($4 to $6K) simply because the features will be so much more expanded out by then.

I tried one of these at the Apple Store and liked it. I did see through the bottom. I think I just made it tighter. haha I had a brain injury in 03. Lost all but about 8% of my vision. I was interested to see how it worked for me. I am happy to say it went well. I want to get one but like to save for things this expensive. I will get it in September.
I see people are returning them. First, it is super expensive. Maybe a bunch of impulse buyers. I get it man. But I have no debt. haha I have such an amazing, free life. Which is why I will get one. Also, for those saying they get headaches, I wonder how many those people have ever used a VR headset. If it's their first time, to just put such a thing on and leave it on for a long time, it would make sense if they had a headache. Some are saying there is not a lot to do with it. They should think about the length of time it has been out. I write. I have a copyright on a cartoon and also started a teen thriller. I have like 250,000 plus words written. I am so interested in seeing how writing goes on it. I also loved reading the stuff I did in the demo. Maybe I would actually start reading the magazines I get with Apple +. haha
You said you watched a full movie. I saw two demos. Mario movie and Avatar. I thought Mario looked better but it looked different than when I watched at home. But I would wonder how safe it is to watch a full movie on such a thing. I mean, would an eye doctor say it best to watch for thirty minutes, take it off to get a break and then go back.
I wish I could see a definitive list of which apps and games I could use on it right now. As well as a list of movies that look great on it. That would make things better.
I had an idea to do a documentary with it. When I get the thing, I would not even turn it on. Just put on my head. Maybe twenty minutes the first day and then add some time each day for a week or two. Then set it out and that was it. You know. Work it up. I had a part of my skull removed from a brain injury. I got it back. haha But there are small metal things in my head that were used when my skull was put back. I had no problem with the Quest 3. But wonder how the Pro would feel.
I would just record a week at a time. I would love to visit California and meet the entire team that works at Apple. Even those that clean the place. Every episode could be on one person. Think about how cool that could be. While the series would be on the Pro, I feel that if we were to see all those that are part of the Apple clog, it would only add to the fun.
Oddly enough, the right side of my head has hurt since I tried the thing. haha But I have been sick for like months. So I believe that it is. Allergies suck. haha
Hmm, as I see it is 11:49pm, I ask myself, was this to little of an amount to write. LOL
    Rock on.

I ended up velcroing a htc vive 3rd party face cushion on my light seal and I have much less pressure on the 2 spots below my eyes. Apple’s cushions suck. They’re way too firm and narrow around the bottom of your eyes. I’m hoping enough people stick with it so that third-party people will start cranking out much better headgear. it’s not that much heavier compared to other VR headset, Apple just went with looks overcomfort.

You watched Rise of Skywalker on your AVP? Suggested video: “Sadomasochism 6 months later.”
I agree that it’s pretty easy to get used to things like the relatively narrow fov. On the other hand, light leakage doesn’t bother me at all, but I find the weight of it, even with the double strap, down right oppressive…somehow it feels far heavier than my Quest, even though I know the difference is small.
I haven’t checked out those Apple 3D experiences yet, but I’m definitely going to after watching this. I still have four days to decide whether I’m returning it (mine arrived on Feb 7) and I appreciate your overview and look forward to the six-month review. Nothings topped it yet and for only 2 (albeit mind blowing) experiences, I'm just not interested no matter how premium a product line the Vision Pro is.

hey Josh, I have been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now and I really like your reviews. The idea of reviewing tech after extended usage is what got me to this channel. However, dont you think 6 months is probably too long? Tbh, if you used a tech so often in the purpose of reviewing it, then I think maybe a month of intensive usage can already reveal almost every pros and cons of it. On the other hand, regarding the long term performance of tech, e.g. Battery longevity, 3rd Party modification/accessories etc, 6 months isnt going to cut it, you would need more time to see these things. I am saying these things just because I think that after 6 months, the hype of the tech is gone and you can't profit from the the views gained by the hype, and I want channels like yours succeed. Cheers~

Hey, thanks for the comment! It’s an interesting question. We definitely don’t compete with most reviewers by releasing a video right when a product comes out, though this video is an experiment on that a bit.
We did try doing one month later reviews for a time but found they didn’t perform as well as our 6 months later reviews and diluted the overall brand so we discontinued them.
The strategy originally for 6 Months Later was to come in at a different part of the product adoption curve where there was less competition with other reviewers but still high search volume for a product and found that it was overall a pretty good strategy, especially via UA-cam search around the holidays.
The thing we’re doing differently this year is being a lot more selective on the products we’re reviewing and doing videos on. Last year we got sidetracked with explainers and reviews on products that were too small and niche. This year we’re going to double down on popular product videos people are searching for and doing reviews on those, but also doing a lot of comparison videos which also perform quite well on the channel.

The price has to come down, simply put. Even with all the new technology, it STILL has the eye strain and fatigue issues that every other such device has caused people. It's not there yet. This feels more like a prototype than a final release. I'm skeptical if they are still trying to fine tune it 5-7 years down the road.

I can only wear the PSVR2 for long time (3+ hours playing Gran Turismo 7 is not uncommon). I also find the Meta Quest 2 / 3 to be too heavy to wear on face for 2+ hours (not that Quest battery reliably lasts that long). The Apple Vision Pro being over 100g heavier than Quest 3 told me before I ever tried it at the Apple Store in a demo that it would be too heavy.
For their next iteration, they have to drop whatever features are unnecessary that are adding unnecessary weight to get closer to 500g or less. Since they are making you have a wired power pack anyway, they should look into moving their CPU/GPU components to wired power-pack or have it run off your MacBook Pro over WiFi.
The 8k Micro-OLED HDR display panels using pancake lens are great. The rest needs more work to become practical (regardless of price).

Great video. I am happy you are keeping it. No guarantee many reviewers could afford to keep a $4k headset. I’ve watched probably a dozen XR expert or enthusiast channels and they are surprisingly the most awestruck users, truly having an almost religious experience while gamers were the most negative. I’m selfish because I know the early adopters, tech reviewers will be the most critical and vocal group Apple engineers and developers can’t wait to hear from. You will shape the Vision Pro which will shape the Quest and so on. I think the Vision Pro will fail if Apple doesn’t QUICKLY bring on compelling “shared spaces”. Not games but more settings for family and friends to participate with the user. For example, if you have an Apple TV why can’t the Vision Pro cast what they are watching onto the living room tv. We should be able to meet in shared spaces in more than FaceTime.

I don’t care about being locked down to side loading like an iPad - I care much more about how an iPad just isn’t the tool for me to get my homework, budgeting, and other multi-step workflows done. The Vision Pro occupies the same class of device. It’s most naturally an INCREDIBLE, 20x better replacement for the iPad and the Apple TV. I wish I was in the same class as the Mac. If so, I’d be all in. Still such a cool product, but it doesn’t fit into my life right now.

As great as it is it is still the worst version of the Vision Pro we will ever see. It will only get better and better from here (if they continue with it). First generation products always have their limitations. I remember when the first iPhone came out in 2007 and it was a breakthrough device. Everyone loved it for what it was but there wasn't too much backlash against it for what it was not. We weren't so spoiled back then that we expected absolute perfection from a first-generation device.
The early adopters will love (or at least appreciate) the Vision Pro as it is now and over time it will get better and more affordable and we will adjust our level of satisfaction/dissatisfaction with it accordingly.
We have to give the product time to evolve and improve. The main problem with the Vision Pro right now isn't the product itself but rather the percentage of potential customers who arrogantly insist on everything being earth-shatteringly perfect right from the jump. We are tech-spoiled consumer culture with little appreciation for the incredible tech hurdles that take time to overcome and refine.
