With a deep love of a wide range of soulful, sun-filled music from around, Antillean music holds a particularly special place in the heart of London-based selector, JOSH FB.
Monthly parties and a catalog of reissues and projects in the pipeline have seen Josh's label, events series and collective "Discothèque Tropicale" making waves championing this sound.
With their first project having a special focus on beautiful French Antillean retro zouk records... Josh and his collective hope to connect the artists that birthed these wonderful genres with the enthusiasm shown for them today by DJs across Europe and the World.
Having found the original artist 'Manix' in the assistant referee logs of a non-league French football match. With the help of Dijon’s “Under Radaar” their forthcoming first release has received strong support and makes for a truly exciting project.
"Guadeloupe’s seemingly never-ending supply of incredible music never ceases to amaze me! This mix is designed to be a celebration of culture and sound which I find extremely important.
A part of my soul lies within these selections, and I’d like to truly thank any listeners, the My Analog Journal team, Manix, the whole Discothèque Tropicale family, and the beautiful Antillean islands themselves…the ability to showcase this music truly means the world, I hope you enjoy it 🫶”

There's the curiosity here in Brazil about zouk: it was the rhythm of choice by the orphans of lambada when the trend came to an end already in the early-1990s when became a craze here an around the world. Suddenly there were lots of lambada dancers without lambada to dance.
As this French Caribbean rhythm has a tempo that reminds lambada's, but not the same, people here adapted the way of dancing, shaking hips instead of making the complex leg movements someone would have when listening to Kaoma.
Maybe the first Brazilian zouk discoverers were people of Pará, coincidentally the state where lambada was born. Due to its geographic position, it was possible to listen to Caribbean stations through the short wave radio, as sets with this feature are common to be seen there due to remoteness of some regions. Pará music scene itself is heavily influenced by the Caribbean one, as can be seen on the main local rhythm, the brega.
Zouk as a Brazilian ballroom dance has the curiosity of becoming independent from the rhythm that gave its name. As long as tempo matches, you can dance if it's playing reggaeton and even som pop song, specially the most recent ones, that tend to follow this construction.
The way Brazilians dance zouk can also owe to people gathering to former lambada clubs and developing the steps when listening to that strange rhythm that came from Martinique and Guadeloupe. Here in São Paulo, there was a place called Lambar, a club on the neighborhood of Santo Amaro, on the Southern side of the city. Probably other places in other cities were also important on this transition.
Despite tracing its roots to what was a hugely popular rhythm, zouk in my country is something more restricted to the ballroom dance bubble or clubs specialized in Caribbean music that's isn't salsa. It also gained some adopters overseas, but for sure isn't to ballroom dance what Brazilian jiu-jitsu is to martial arts. Follow below some examples of Brazilian zouk dance:

Thanks for all this- fascinating
Wow, thank you for the write up. Fascinating insight.
Wow. I learned so much from this post! Obrigado!!!
So much power !! Realy enjoy !!!
Thank you mate… zouk power ❤️👊

Zouk music and no Kassav' ? That's like exhibiting Baroque music without Bach !
All the respect to the creators and legends who made the genre what it is. Forever in debt to them and their originality. But in my humble opinion having dug zouk for a long time, the genre runs very deep and goes beyond just Kassav and what they created. There are so many amazing records out there… many of which I prefer to the Kassav ones tbh
Also there are many incredible zouk artists who I don’t think get their fair dues… so for me I wanted to take the opportunity to showcase and promote music from a few of those people. Gwedi, Jean-Claude Brice, Chorus (Alex Fauchi), Pascal Latour, Gérard Hubert, Serge Régent, Jean-Claude Renaudeau…
These are all examples of such artists. Thanks for listening tho I hope you enjoyed the selections nonetheless ☺️
@@musicalbackpackingwjoshfb lineup is killer . Loved it. Haven't dug into zouk as much as you have , but I can't get 'Lague moin' Outta my head. It's so fucking groovy !
@@sidharthwarrier9001 funny you should say that! It’s 100% my fav track of their’s 🍻
