A look at 4 maps from the Beta. Some weird, some very weird.

the daikatana reference was actually about how the main character, hiro, (not superfly) cannot exit levels without his allies, and would say "i can't leave without my buddy superfly"
this in combination with the terrible pathfinding the allies had made it one of, if not *the* biggest flaw of daikatana

No, the starting level for (one of) the beta version of Ravenholm.
The docks that the player spawns/starts on is seen on the TV while the audio file 'distortedtrumpets.wav' plays.

1:50 or maybe they just had the original high quality recording for HL1 saved in a drive somewhere.
Remember, when HL1 launched, most PCs in people's houses struggled to run it. They had to compress the audio both to save disk space and to run the game properly.
That makes sense. I did try playing both the HL1 Hazard Course and this map one after the other and honestly, there's definitely a compression factor.
There were also a weird series of developer test maps made for the leaked 2003 build of Half-Life Source that are rarely discussed.
These test maps were just portions of Half-Life's campaign mashed together to probably test how GoldSrc maps could be ported to Source.

ickypop is something I was not at all expecting. My first thought when I saw the scene was "IS THIS REAL!" I mean its to insane to be real, and if it is. HOW COME "I" never herd of it before. That map is now my new favorite!
These feel like watching some strange lost footage from a camera in the woods you found.
Except the last one is footage of a fat bald man eating a watermelon

I remember the first half life 1 mod I played was called "life's end" and there's a part of the game where the character starts hallucinating and you end up in a boxing ring with only a crowbar and your forced to fight various enemies. Perhaps it was a reference to that boxing ring beta map?
Half-Life 2 has apparently had one absolute hell of a development process
I'm pretty sure that hl2 is the only game where the beta and retail are 2 absolutely different games

And HL2 is not that different from early idea. Portal 2 and TF2 are.

Radhaz i think there was a sequence in the cut ravenholm lake where the ickyosaur destroys the air boat so you cant escape from ravenholm

Other than what Barney says, none of the original dialog from the original Hazard Course from Half-Life 1 were re-recorded (0:28)
This needs a part 2. A bit too much time was spent on one map. There are so many maps in the WC Mappack that would be great to cover for your channel.
HL1 Alpha-style mods would also be really fun to cover and there's tons of them with how often they're cancelled. RIP Absolute Zero.
You know how there’s that one bit in hl2 where you can see gman on a boat with a crow on his shoulder? I think it might be a little reference to ickypop.

I don't get why there wasn't a training course in HL2, it would have added more to the world like it did with Half-life 1. Rad's idea sounded awesome, possibly playing as a rebel testing out a new hev suit in Black Mesa East would have worked. Or maybe you go through levels or different reality set up by the Gman to get you prepared. Maybe it didn't have to be canon, just levels to tell the player how to play the game. I just think it would have been cool.
Also, when I was testing out the Beta maps, I came across a weird one. I don't remember the name, but it had bright lights and colors everything and cars in the air. It was like something I would do in Garry's Mod in my youth. I'm guessing it was to test out the Source Engine... obviously. But it was still strange.

What they could have tested when they made the boxing map was the zombie attacks in Source.

Actually you play as hiro in daikatana and the joke is about the companions getting stuck and you cant go to the map due to leaving your allies behind and one of the allies is super fly Johnson.

Yeah. That was a bit of a mistake from my side. After the video got published, I looked more into Daikatana and turned out I misread "one of the main character" as main character when looking at Johnson's profile.

I think the boxing map may potentially indicate Valve planned monster/enemy infighting at some point (at least for zombies), similarly to how there is so in Doom.
The map would thus be an easy way to test and demonstrate this Ai behavior. It could have just been a flat brush, where they're made to attack each-other immediately, but I think the mapper was probably a bit bored and decided to make it a boxing ring for a laugh.

The third map reminds me of mods like Half baked or Klainer turn.

Huh, I never knew about that first map having the superfly johnson sequence. A classic inside joke only the deepest beta fans understand, I assure you.
Maybe they didn't use the Hazard Course, because the game the game teaches you everything anyway when you progress, by using puzzles etc.

in half life they used only one voice for the scientist but with warried pitch for the 4 models maybe in the hazard map its the unaltered version of the line
Yeah. I tried both the HL1 one and this one together and it seems like the pitch is slightly off in HL1. It's also a little compressed.

My theory about the Hazard course map was that the map was actually a test that Devs worked on to see if was possible to port and recreate maps from Goldsrc/Half - Life into source 1 even using the same scripts, dialogue, and scripted events from the original map.

My theory of the training course is that it came before Half-Life Source became just a port and not a full remake. Possibly to see if script-porting worked, too, though!

I think Hazard course is probably some type of test of HL1 port to source

Perhaps the reason for the HL2 version of the training course was to compare HL1 and HL2’s movement?
how about beta ideas/concepts about the episodes? E.g ministriders, alyx's original cause of injury) (I think alyx had some cut fighting animations too, shown in one of the ep1 trailers)
