Great demo, I have trained several years in kali, Silat, muay thai and BJJ. These guys are good at what they do. Don't dismiss it just because it's a demonstration. I train BJJ and Muay thia for the ring, and kali and silat for street, weapons and to round and balance my skills.
It's all good, it's the man and the effort in his training NOT THE STYLE...
Peace, love and best to all!

the relationship between Kali and Silat is one like Northern and Southern Kung Fu. Come from the same root art but were influenced independently
by outside factors and necessities. BTW, many Filipino styles in Mindanao are still called Kuntao and Silat.

I'm an Arnis/Kali practitioner, currently studying four styles of it.. I disagree with those people who claim that Arnis De Mano/Kali is heavily influenced by Spanish Esgrima. European Fencing is all about getting your point through the opponent while Arnis De Mano looks more about the weapons edge. Also a big difference with Arnis from Euro Fencing is the live hand/guardian hand.

Explain european fencing. You thought spaniards only went over with rapiers? The probably went over with other swords too. Also swords which had a cutting purpose instead mainly a stabbing one like most rapiers. Just inform yourself about the spanish fencing. By the way espada y daga? Rapier and main gauche? Seems familiar. There has been influence and why would that be a bad thing?

Silat and Kali have a great many similarities, while still differing fundamentally. It really comes down to personal preference, as they're both equally effective & deadly arts. I train in Kali, while dabbling in Silat, and I think they compliment each other wonderfully.

@Tony I'm a lightweight guy so silat will work well in my favor (im better off with kali tho). I have an unrelated follow-up question.
When it comes the musculoskeletal system, what martial arts compliments the art of shooting (firearms)??? I'm thinking taekwondo as well because the assumed positions and how they move are in line with the assumed position of the shooter and the exercises involved are to relieve.

Kali is the martial art of the Philippines not Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Singapore or any other Southeast Asian country. The Malay hulubalang fighters used Silat which has similarities but still different from Kali. Kali, Arnis, Eskrima was created through generations of tribal wars & foreign invasions. That is why the Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country with so many experts or grandmasters in this martial arts. I don't see any experts in other Southeast Asian countries that you claim. Kali is not Silat. It's like me saying Karate is KungFu.

Kali philosophy is different.... The approach of Kali in the fight scene is focused on weapons and improvised weapons..... As much as possible, you avoid fighting with empty hands.... Empty hands are used only in a very desperate situation where you cannot find any weapons such as knife or stick or scissor, screw driver, pencil etc.... The logic is simple... You have more chances of winning if you fight with "weapons" than fighting with empty hands.....

Yes they still do. Pencak Silat is from-the-very-beginning a very practical MA. It's first and foremost a combat art and the only rule in Silat; kill the opponent before they kill You.
However, what You see now in tournaments is "Silat Sport". PERSILAT (International Pencak Silat Federation) has taking everything deadly (attacks & locks) from Pencak Silat to create a new form called Silat Sport, setting the rules for it to be able to compete in Olympic games.

I agree with the comment about full contact experience, there is no substitute. But most people can't afford to take time of work with injuries from training. The video is a demo for an audience, nothing more. Full contact in an art like Kali where they do a lot of close quarter knife fighting can be kinda lethal, if you or your partner does not really know what they are doing with their weapon. So maybe there are occasions where less of the full contact intensity is smarter.

Ummm... no. The fight choreographer and stunt choreographer's name is Olivier Schneider. He incorporated Kali. That can be settled by doing a quick google search or use IMDB to find those details. Scheider trained under Jeff Imada who's one of Dan Inosanto's boys. Imada choreographed the fight scenes for the Bourne movie series.

@Sc4x I watched some popular videos on BJJ flying arm bar after reading your comment and what I can say is, you must be dreaming. The flying arm bar needs a good hold on the opponent to be performed. This stunt not possible against kali practitioners. Depending on the attempted attack (as I said I watched some videos), the attacker will end up with a broken neck, elbow, fingers or dislocated shoulder. This video showed only a certain style of kali and is slow (probably for safety reasons).

@all FYI Silat (penchak silat/pentcak silat/penjak silat) is islamization name for malayan MA (it came along wtih the islamization of malayan people). Long time before , in the time of HINDU-BUDHIST malay, we called the `Nusantara Region`MA as KANURAGAN (khanuragan in other version),the word still functioned as `generic term` of nusantara region MAs and yes it came from indian sanskrit.
