I'm an Arnis/Kali practitioner, currently studying four styles of it.. I disagree with those people who claim that Arnis De Mano/Kali is heavily influenced by Spanish Esgrima. European Fencing is all about getting your point through the opponent while Arnis De Mano looks more about the weapons edge. Also a big difference with Arnis from Euro Fencing is the live hand/guardian hand.
Explain european fencing. You thought spaniards only went over with rapiers? The probably went over with other swords too. Also swords which had a cutting purpose instead mainly a stabbing one like most rapiers. Just inform yourself about the spanish fencing. By the way espada y daga? Rapier and main gauche? Seems familiar. There has been influence and why would that be a bad thing?
the relationship between Kali and Silat is one like Northern and Southern Kung Fu. Come from the same root art but were influenced independently by outside factors and necessities. BTW, many Filipino styles in Mindanao are still called Kuntao and Silat.
Great demo, I have trained several years in kali, Silat, muay thai and BJJ. These guys are good at what they do. Don't dismiss it just because it's a demonstration. I train BJJ and Muay thia for the ring, and kali and silat for street, weapons and to round and balance my skills. It's all good, it's the man and the effort in his training NOT THE STYLE... Ummm... no. The fight choreographer and stunt choreographer's name is Olivier Schneider. He incorporated Kali. That can be settled by doing a quick google search or use IMDB to find those details. Scheider trained under Jeff Imada who's one of Dan Inosanto's boys. Imada choreographed the fight scenes for the Bourne movie series.
Dude I've trained in both and I can tell you when it comes down to it; Both are equally badass, I'd recommend both arts to anybody who wants to know how to defend themselves.

@zulfikarl just to let you know, silat is a south east asian martial art. it is not just indeginous to indonesia and other south east asian countries. majority of the filipino martial arts came from indonesia and other countries. how? because many people from other regions travled to what is now the philippines. for ex: indonesians traveled to luzon and visayan. chinese and taiwanese traveled to luzon and some polynesians traveled to other parts of the island ect.
Please search Olivier Scheider on IMDB. That should settle the dispute. But also, Schneider could have used some elements of Nagasu Do, but primarily he focuses on Kali. He trained with Jeff Imada... Imada's work can be seen on the Bourne series...

Some IGNORANT people can say “it’s not effective in real life combat, etc”. But in reality, especially Kali, these same exact moves defeated the Spaniards when all the Filipinos had were Bolo’s (knives) and bamboo sticks and the Spaniards had rifles and swords.

The Silat practiced by our Moro brothers, are different from the Silat practiced by Indonesia, it has also evolved differently, just like Arnis/Escrima/Kali has evolved differently, just look at the Kris sword used by the Moros and in Indonesia and Malaysia, Moro kris is for slashing and the other one is for stabbing. But needless to say, all of this arts are all Malay arts.
@dynnbob Which bring us back to what I said earlier... that the Malay peoples of South East Asia, the Filipino's, Indonesian's, Malaysian's, Brunei, etc. are connected in the past in some way, and shared certain things, and our peoples, the Malay peoples most likely practiced similar/related or maybe the same Fighting Arts, before the arrival of the western foreign invaders, which led to the evolution of our respective arts in turn separating ways or branching out.
After searching in the net for a while, I found some differences. And the way I understood is that Kali is kind of mixed up art. Some Silat, some Karate, some Wushu and so on. What about the Silat? It is unalloyed. Am I right?
no art better than other, thy are just different, who wins ? depends of who is more prepared, has more resistance, is more effective, is faster and so on, these are arts and they all deserve respect, sad thing is many of us are fighters thru computer and nothing else

Yea but it was mainly archery it wasn't an actual full blown art. They learned their hand to hand stuff from crossing the land bridges and watching Indonesian and Chinese martial artists and basically taking those moves and making it into their own thing so again im right, without their influences there would be no kali.
Silat is amazing fighting style but kali for self defense Ang protect ... For me in this real life kali is the best fighting style no offend for silat this is my opinion
@dynnbob because if you look at history, before the west started colonizing Asia, our country, the Philippines had some close relations with our neighbors in Maritime SE Asia, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, etc.; so most likely we shared certain arts, as our peoples are somehow connected, we are all of Malay stock; but as the foreign invaders started coming, our arts had to evolved differently to adapt against our opponents fighting styles, the same is true with our Malay brothers in SE Asia.
kali isnt silat, but kali can trace its origins and relations from silat. due to the changing socio,economic and political environments kali evolved into its own, but the silat origins are there, there isnt only one style of silat bro. im not new to exkrima/kali,arnis and even silatan. believe me, i know phils history well. we are bangsamoro, malay ppl have always been blade oriented.,kali itself is a new term. and have debatable origins by name.
@copypacercopypacer What I mean is, cite the book or website where it says the silat practitioners defeated eskrimadors. Ask anybody from that area in Mindanao which ones attack when his enemy's back is turned, when his enemy thinks all is forgotten or at least forgiven, or who brings lots of "backup" to gang up on a single enemy on an agreed one-on-one fight. If one is the better fighter, he does not have to treachery in order to win. Just saying.
From my point of view, they all came from a common start, and then took various influences over time... given different names to differenciate the more recent geographical references from which they hail from today. Silat and kali both are heavily influenced by weapons usage, but i dont know about eskrima... looked to me to be a simplified combat oriented, maybe military influenced system... i might be wrong here. Can anybody elaborate?
Real Silat and Silat (sport) is very difference. silat not from philipin , indonesi or malayis aor ect but fro, Asia pasific ( Sriwijaya kingdom) or ( majapahit KingdoM)
For me, this display vid sums it all up, the pissing contest that is. When it comes to most of the acknowledged effective styles, in the end it ain't the style, its the person who's studying it, to which the large guy in red has displayed irrefutably. Kali philosophy is different.... The approach of Kali in the fight scene is focused on weapons and improvised weapons..... As much as possible, you avoid fighting with empty hands.... Empty hands are used only in a very desperate situation where you cannot find any weapons such as knife or stick or scissor, screw driver, pencil etc.... The logic is simple... You have more chances of winning if you fight with "weapons" than fighting with empty hands.....
@@yeqo6439 He's not saying Kali hand to hand isn't effective. He's just saying that Kalistas prefer to take more advantageous opportunities such as use of weapons. They prefer to end fights as quick as possible. Hand to hand are for more self-defense/desperate situations where you can't get your hand on something. Kali is a great martial art, I'm a fan of it.

Silat and Kali have a great many similarities, while still differing fundamentally. It really comes down to personal preference, as they're both equally effective & deadly arts. I train in Kali, while dabbling in Silat, and I think they compliment each other wonderfully.

When it comes the musculoskeletal system, what martial arts compliments the art of shooting (firearms)??? I'm thinking taekwondo as well because the assumed positions and how they move are in line with the assumed position of the shooter and the exercises involved are to relieve.
I'm partial to Pencak Silat (merpati putih). Kali is a very powerful art and is by no lesser than Persilat. They are just different paths to the one truth.
the main deference is silat has alot of ground base fighting in kali we avoid the ground as much as posible coz you dont know who will hit you from behind better to stand up fast
And Kali fighters prefer to fight dirty and take advantage of the situation. Kali guys will find whatever they can get their hand on and fight you with it. Doesn't matter what it is, pencil, ballpen, pipes, brick, rock, stick, umbrellas etc. they'll use it.

from the word alone there is already "majapahit", yes, majapahit is a kingdom that exists in Indonesia, the name of his art "kalimajapahit" martial arts originated from Indonesia ... but it was extinct at that time ... and incidentally the majapahit soldiers brought martial arts this is to the Philippines ... so it was recognized by the Philippines, and once again actually this martial art from Majapahit (now Indonesia)

this is martial arts for competition and it was nerfed for safety , the real martial arts (silat/kali in this vid) is for killing , to immobilized and open wound the target ,uses Blades or weapon the remove ligature, muscle and disconnect arteries .real use of martial arts are the street fight , not in the competition.

There are rules even in MMA and rightly so. No eye strikes, groin shots, kicking when the opponent is down. these can change the outcome of the fight. I agree with BJ pen when he "said" that a lot of MMA, not necessarily UFC, is watered down.
First of all, arnis is arnis. Its origins is in the philippines, nowhere else. That it is the truest form of Filipino martial arts. This art has been preserved in the hearts and spirit if Filipino masters. Thanks. Mabuhay ang sining marsyal pilipino.

I prefer silat is very useful for street fight. Kali is basically a jungle training for army purpose.

Kali has 4 names Kali Panuntukan(Kali without weapon), Arnis(Sticks), Eskrima(1 weapon i guess)
Many countries uses kali for military martial arts if you don't know.

@dynnbob because if you look at history, before the west started colonizing Asia, our country, the Philippines had some close relations with our neighbors in Maritime SE Asia, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, etc.; so most likely we shared certain arts, as our peoples are somehow connected, we are all of Malay stock; but as the foreign invaders started coming, our arts had to evolved differently to adapt against our opponents fighting styles, the same is true with our Malay brothers in SE Asia.

Ask anybody from that area in Mindanao which ones attack when his enemy's back is turned, when his enemy thinks all is forgotten or at least forgiven, or who brings lots of "backup" to gang up on a single enemy on an agreed one-on-one fight. If one is the better fighter, he does not have to treachery in order to win. Just saying.

From my point of view, they all came from a common start, and then took various influences over time... given different names to differenciate the more recent geographical references from which they hail from today.
Silat and kali both are heavily influenced by weapons usage, but i dont know about eskrima... looked to me to be a simplified combat oriented, maybe military influenced system... i might be wrong here. Can anybody elaborate?

Kali philosophy is different.... The approach of Kali in the fight scene is focused on weapons and improvised weapons..... As much as possible, you avoid fighting with empty hands.... Empty hands are used only in a very desperate situation where you cannot find any weapons such as knife or stick or scissor, screw driver, pencil etc.... The logic is simple... You have more chances of winning if you fight with "weapons" than fighting with empty hands.....

They prefer to end fights as quick as possible. Hand to hand are for more self-defense/desperate situations where you can't get your hand on something. Kali is a great martial art, I'm a fan of it.

Silat and Kali have a great many similarities, while still differing fundamentally. It really comes down to personal preference, as they're both equally effective & deadly arts. I train in Kali, while dabbling in Silat, and I think they compliment each other wonderfully.

When it comes the musculoskeletal system, what martial arts compliments the art of shooting (firearms)??? I'm thinking taekwondo as well because the assumed positions and how they move are in line with the assumed position of the shooter and the exercises involved are to relieve.
I'm partial to Pencak Silat (merpati putih). Kali is a very powerful art and is by no lesser than Persilat. They are just different paths to the one truth.
the main deference is silat has alot of ground base fighting in kali we avoid the ground as much as posible coz you dont know who will hit you from behind better to stand up fast

There are rules even in MMA and rightly so. No eye strikes, groin shots, kicking when the opponent is down. these can change the outcome of the fight. I agree with BJ pen when he "said" that a lot of MMA, not necessarily UFC, is watered down.
