- Hello all! It was a beautiful week and weekend and I spent a lot of quality time prepping the fall garden. If you watched my "5 Things I'm Planting for August" video from 2 weeks ago, you'll know that I've planted my seeds already and now we just need to prepare a great place for them to grow. Before we get started, I'll give you my number one tip for prepping your fall garden!
First, we transplant the winter squashes. Since this is my first time planting winter squash at the farm, I've decided to experiment with 3 different growing areas. The first area is the corn patch and we'll start there first. I clean up the patch, ditch some weeds, and plant 4 squashes directly into the ground. I've got seedlings for spaghetti squash, acorn squash and sweet dumpling squash and will plant a mixture of both in each area.
Next, we'll tidy up the tomato beds while we're on this side of the farm. We'll talk about cool nights and protecting your tomatoes, we'll trellis them up one more time and I'll show you a cool worm castings experiment I've been working on with combining tomato and pepper seeds in one pot!
Then we'll move over to Potato Land, where sadly there are no more potatoes. However, I think this will be a really sunny space to let the squash grow. I have a hunch this is the sunniest place in the fall on the farm. Two of the squash will be trellised and 2 will be left to spill across the ground.
Then I have one more swimming pool to place the last 4 squash in. This spot will be just south of the barn, near the pie pumpkins. These four, I'm not protecting in any way, but it they do proceed fruit, I'll cover them with mesh bags as I do my pie pumpkins.
Next we move on to the peppers. I'd like to see how some of the peppers finish out the season up in Potato land as well. So, I've brought all the pepper-only containers up and arrange them among the squash.
Finally, I'll show you how well the carrots are germinating as we take a break after a good couple of days of work. Thanks so much for your support as always and see you on the next one!
