Ok so my husband and I like to watch your show. Ok, he watches it and I’m in the room but any way.... I have helped him over the years do minor repairs on guitars with nail polish. I would suggest you try gel polish. It will not dry until you cure it with the UV light, it has a thicker shinier finish than normal nail polish and is more similar to a poly lacquer. You will get better coverage and more control. You will need approx 3 bottles I would think to do the whole body. It’s also a self leveling product behaving a bit like epoxy so no sanding needed. I would use a gel top coat with it- look for one that says no wipe top coat. Actually, I wouldn't use nail polish at all for an entire guitar but since you seem to be headed that route I thought I would give you a little nail polish insight.
I forgot to mention, because it does not dry AT ALL until it is cured with the light, you can swirl colors to mimic a dip top and you can remove mistakes with rubbing alcohol. You can walk away for an hour and come back to it and it still won’t dry until you hit it with the light. Also, it only takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes (depends on brand) to cure and then it’s ready for recoat or to play! Another nail tool to get would be a cheap 4-way nail buffing block from Sally’s or any other beauty supply, this works great for shining up frets and other hardware.
Kendra, thank you for this suggestion!
This absolutely solves a lot of problems with my next guitar painting idea/project!
Okay. So. a next time thing here: To get a really nice looking gold, you've gotta do a primer base, sand it smooth af, spray high gloss black and get it real smooth and shiny, and then spray the gold over that. Can usually polish it enough it's reflective.
Alaric Paley if I was going for a commercial finish that’s what I would do. But I’m not, I’m having fun and experimenting.
@@60CycleHumcast I personally dig the "Rat Rod" look over a pristine finish.
The gold doesn't need to be perfect since it is an undercoat for a different color.
Ryan, the dribble top began to look very interesting about midway through the sanding!
Agreed, I was halfway hoping he'd stop and have a change of heart because at one point it actually looked really nice
both sides actually looked damn sexy, they just didnt match one another.
Sand all that metallic off, again, put random splotches of nail polish on the front to vaguely match the pattern on the back and then just put a clear gloss over that. That polish soaked into the wood grain looked cool.
Anodized gold/aluminium pickguard is a must.
You “nailed” it! 😀
Your channel is excellent Ryan! I love your "I wonder what this would be like" approach. Stay safe and enjoy playing guitar everyone
"Afford-a-finish my Strat". This series is fun to watch.
I'm having fun making it. I had the thought last night that I wish i had a pile of raw bodies to experiment on.
@@60CycleHumcast Context is everything with this comment "I wish i had a pile of raw bodies to experiment on."
sjmdrum call me “Dr. Frankenstrat”
Must love sanding. It’s almost like spraying the paint on works really well🧐
clockwork914 I’m experimenting here.
I love videos like this... Thank you!
Take it from Nancy Reagan: "Just say no!"
Morbid curiosity keeps bringing me back to this project. 😖😂
Just an idea...maybe for some future project...
Gibson (before they were evil) would use wood filler on their Korina bodies before finishing to get that smooth, glass like texture. Pretty standard procedure. But they would use a dark contrasting filler to offset the light Limba wood (Korina). Which gave it that pronounced grain. You could add any colour (fancy English misspelling) to wood filler.
Nice to see you wearing a mask while outdoors, stay safe...
loved the streaked edges on the bright wood, dunno what would be a good way to acheive that look intentionally
I think a clear pickguard would be best for the green gold burst
Sounds like you got a better plan now. Can't wait to see the finished guitar. I think the gold and green looks sick! I had something similar with a surfboard once that I wanted to spray yellow-red-purple burst on. Ended up looking way too heavy so I started sanding the paint job down again. When I got to the patchy state similar to the back of your guitar right now I took a step back, had a beer and decided it looks great the way it is. Just clearcoated it and been happy with it ever since =D
Paint the pickguard too! Might want to invest in aloe too.
your content always delivers dude. thank you.
You have to wait 10 minutes between each coat. Patience is your best friend.
So how many guitars do you have now? You should do a gear tour. As far as the finish is concerned you need to spray it with primer sealer, sanding primer, and then block sand it then base coat. It is worth the effort to do it this way
It looks like pancakes!
Ok. Well you have a good idea. Candy paint spray over flake always does good things. Legit plan however now. Idk about nail polish but.
I would have sprayed it blush pink chalked matte from rustoleum
5:38. Just Mohawk Matte Nitro over it as is.. Maybe rub some tea bags on the wood or stain it..
Or just keep layering ridiculous and THEM clear over it
Your gonna need to cut with very fine paper then polish then clear then the polish thing again if you want..
Use stearated paper for removing paint, it doesn't clog. It's more expensive but it doesn't clog with paint anywhere near as fast.
ill look into that
🎜 Come and listen to a story of a man in a shed
A cool family guy, always kept his family fed
And then one day he was shootin' at a Strat
And when he paints, he doesn't wear a hat... 🎝
Success when painting is 90% preparation and 10% execution. I would have sanded that bad boy some more? 1 can of grey, or white primer would have been magic.
If you want a type of paint that gives off that effect, try Golden interference. There are different mixing gels, including an interference gel, in many different strengths. If you want a raised-up effect, heavy gel is the mixative to produce that effect.
Dude the blue- green on the lower horn looks gorgeous, order some of that as well!
Tip for the future: if you ever need to remove an acrylic based paint like that again leave lacquer thinner on the top for a few minutes to break down the paint and it will easily scrape off with a putty knife or something similar
Gage Link I’ve done that before, I didn’t want to deal with the goop. And the body underneath was already imperfect
i did almost the exact same thing to an aria pro "sg" bass i had as a teenager - my cousins and i had a punk rock cover band - gigged with it a few times before it got stolen...
Although you got a little toasty you looked like you were having fun, which is the most important thing.
strips down gold sparkle guitar
makes gold guitar
Bungus McGee it’s not going to be gold when I’m done
Return of the pancakes song!!!!
It's a GREEN/YELLOW SUNBURST
Painting the pick guard with nail polish too?
Just so you know , in the Visual Arts world, it's generally the practice to use gloss black, over a very prepped finish , with metallics,- though this is to produce the smoothest, and most similar to metal(s), result,- not necessarily what you're going for .
And next time, indeed, consider thinning the nail polish for a more even result.Paint consistency is always key, whatever the desired results.By all means,- have fun with it.
That gold looks amazing! Just sand and do it as a golden Strat. It would look amazing if you do it right.
Wet flat it then hit it with clear coat and it be shiny as can be
You need a heat gun and a scraper. The paint just scrapes right off down to the wood.
i have those things, you might of seen me use them in the first video in this series. I dont like to use the heat gun on paint that is still kind of gummy like this because it just turns into a melted mess instead of chipping away.
@@60CycleHumcast Ah ok, i didn't see the first video Ryan!
Use a bigger (wider) brush next time. Do not use the included nail polish brush.
Best bad job ever .
Wish you had some acetone... easier than sanding.
I have gallons of it. I just didn't want to use it.
What’s that sunburst 3-pickup offset with the Bigsby? Really digging the look of it. BTW I’m kinda surprised the nail polish didn’t peel off like a sticker.
Alex Crews nail polish is nitro. The guitar back there is a Nutter Astro Captain
If only there was a liquid specifically made to take nail polish off of things. Some kind of nail polish remover.
i didnt want to deal with a gunky mess. I chose the dustier of two evils.
How much is a new strat body?
JEZZUS! OMG! 😨
You could have used nail polish remover and just wiped it off
siq quarantine mask, bruh. and not that it'll probably dry that way, but the blotchy gold looks pretty cool on camera.
Let's do this.
When he put down the camera it sounded like an enderman
Have you checked out Brad Angove’s videos on guitar finishing with spray cans?
Bruce Hewat nope
60 Cycle Hum have a look. He does amazing stuff. I learned a lot from watching his videos. Just like I learn a lot from yours.
Ryan's Dick Dale signature axe.
Strip it again Ryan. And buy some nitrocellulose in rattle cans from stewmac.
nope, i'm not doing this the boomer way, i'm forging my own path and experimenting.
@@60CycleHumcast ok, we'll get the nail polish which is basically nitro and an airbrush . It will help to get more from the polish. Just a thought. Would still be all your own.
Donny Hall I don’t have an airbrush rig and I’m intentionally trying to do this with as little equipment as possible. It’s about the journey, not replicating the tried and true ways of doing this.
Dude. Pls. ALWAYS do samples before working on the real thing. It helps you with the technique and you can have an idea of what you're doing BEFORE the repent. You can always throw everything onto that guitar body whenever you want. If you're happy with it nobody will judge you.
To each their own - I much prefer the back over the front. No question. IMO, the entire guitar should look like that kinda Pollack nightmare. Then again, my all time fave guitar paint job is Satriani's Black Dog so.....
Needs a fine sand and clear.
Good choice, that grandma blouse didn't fit you.
You can fix that, get some sand paper, 100 grit is best, you will need that later, now take the guitar and pour a can of gas on it and set it on fire.....now rub your eyes with the sand paper. Dont ever do this again.
JeffT I’ll never stop
Just gotta sand it between coats, and only with wet n dry
Dom Koyuki Well I don’t know for nail polish (think Ryan is the only one crazy enough to use that) but every paint job I do gets wet and dry between each coat, 1000-1500 grit. Sand paper is ONLY meant for bare wood -not painted surfaces. Then polish with a mild abrasive like Meguires car stuff for final shine. Can’t go wrong, it’s so smooth and shiny
Dom Koyuki No, primer should not be necessary. As long as the gloss sheen to the original paint is roughed up enough (dull matte finish) the new paint will adhere to it
Dom Koyuki Cool, good luck man. Hope it goes smoothly (pun intended)
I like .45
Stay pony golden boy
Well.....I was going to comment....But no I just can't.....Sorry😁🙄😏🤣
Robert W you did though
the front looks like brazil flag
dude, this project is a hot mess
Not sure about Pimp My Strat; with that amount of nail polish it's more like Ho My Strat
😂😂😂😂😂ho my strat!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I liked that front! The back just looked like a technicolour yawn!
WHY didn't you just use nail polish REMOVER on the back instead of just trying to sand it all off?
DUHH!
because i didn't want to deal with a gunky mess. i've gone that route before. Also nail polish remover is just acetone, I have gallons of it in the garage from surfboard making. DUH!
@@60CycleHumcast GROOVY!
Dude please check out some new covers on my channel!
Rock on Ryan!
My god that was painful. Do not ever use sandpaper on paint. Use jasco stripper to remove and wet n dry to smooth. Yikes
Mad Mac 66 I’ll do what I want.
@@60CycleHumcast bloody hell you've gone rogue 😂
@@60CycleHumcast HAHAHA course you will mate. Lighten up Francis just trying help you out
Impressively bad job,
