      Petrokemikal You are correct. We were not slave-driving anyone. However, when I researched this I found that when the Irish arrived on the island of Montserrat some of them turned rogue. This wasn't exclusive to the Irish it was also true of the Black African slaves. They also turned rogue and were rewarded for being the overseers for the landowners - traitors to their own people in other words. It was only a small amount from what I have read. Michal D Higgins doesn't make this clear and has us believing that the Irish were actually the slavemasters.

      The Irish Slaves Myth is racist pseudohistory. The blacks on Montserrat are descended from slaves owned by Irish masters

    • @emcc8598
      @emcc8598 3 роки тому

      @@themaskedman221 Again a gross misrepresentation of history.
      Monserrat was an English colony ran for and by the English. The vast majority of Irish on Montserrat were not planters. Most were indentured servants or poor labourers.
      The plantations owners on Montserrat were mainly English and Anglo-Irish (ie English colonisers in Ireland)
      Seems to be a serious amount of misinformation being pushed by a small number of accounts on UA-cam to try and change that history and appropriate blame for slavery to 1000s of Irish transported to Montserrat against their will and made to work as forced labour or who had little choice but to do so following the ethnic cleansing of Ireland.
      Facts were the absolute majority of Irish on Montserrat were poor Irish and were heavily discriminated against by the English and Anglo-Irish Plantation owners. Out of the 10s of 1000s of Irish transported by the English to the Caribbean - many are believed to have died due to the harsh conditions or were simply worked to death.
      This is from the history of Montserrat written by the pre-eminent Montserratian historian of African descent. Howard Fegus.
      "During the heyday of plantation life in Montserrat, most of the Irish were only a few removes from slavery. In addition to carving a livelihood from the arid slopes of St Patrick's and St George's, their lives were a constant struggle for a place in the sun. ...Discriminating laws were therefore enacted against them to prevent competition with the English and Irish Protestants for positions of authority in the society. Illiterate English were preferred in government administration to educated *Irish* Catholics"...

    • @themaskedman221
      @themaskedman221 3 роки тому +1

      @@emcc8598 There is a very deliberate effort by you on several videos to spread misinformation about Montserrat's history. In particular you're rather fond of quoting Howard Fergus on what he had said about Montserrat decades ago. You don't seem to understand that histories change with time. In fact histories are rewritten more often than they're made.
      I seem to recall directing your attention over to more recent scholarship of Montserrat's colonial history, on another video. So I'm not going to do it again. It's obvious you aren't interested.
      But I would direct other users over to Akenson's work on the subject. Also see Liam Hogan's reviews of Montserratian historiography, freely accessible online.

    • @emcc8598
      @emcc8598 3 роки тому

      @@themaskedman221aka "Jonathan Christopher". So you believe a direct quote from Howard Fergus is "misinformation"? Quite a hilarious comment from an individual who has evidently not only changed his name on UA-cam in an obvious effort to divert attention away from their regular anti Irish rhetoric on every other UA-cam video relating in any way to Irish history, but also an individual who spends their time policing such videos to make sure to drown out every other opinion posited. Oddly enough just like your comment here.
      I find it incredibly strange that despite you being a self declared American - one who evidently knows little or nothing about Ireland or indeed Irish history, bizarrely claims to be *the* expert based on the sole claim of having edited some Wiki article.
      The same individual who spends practically every waking hour on UA-cam and other platforms, pushing misinformation mostly in the form of racist anti Irish Rhetoric.
      So yes I get it - you as an American don't like Dr Howard Fergus's expertise and knowledge on the Irish in Montserrat or even recognise that Dr Fergus is the pre eminent historian on Montserratian history - who not only had access to a huge amount of primary sources and historical records for his research (many of which have already been lost) but has written extensively over many years on the history of Montserrat. And it yes indeed it remains Dr Fergus is very much a recognised authority on the Islands history.
      As yes their are many updated sources which back Dr Fergus's historical research and which further validate that work. A new edition of his book on the History of Montserrat was published in 2004. Odd you choose to ignore all such research in favour of those who fit your evident bias.
