Always been a great song. I saw SRV in Bloomington IN, he was sick and said he could cancel and refund our money or he could play without the band and no singing. Needless to say he played, sat on edge of stage, started with this song and never stopped just freewheeled his way around the Strat for about 45 to 55 minutes and show was over. Glad I got to see it. At end of the show he said “If you don’t give away everything you have then you never had it to begin with” Not sure what that means but I’ll never forget it, gone too soon RIP SRV.
it may be a reflection of the poverty he lived in while becoming a great musician and the charity of himself for others. He was like Jimi in that Love for others was the focus of his life. He needed Love as much as he gave it. Lenny is such a precious expression of his spirit.
I think he meant that as an artist. In the sense that you gotta be willing to die for what you believe in. Only then, will you truly know that you had something (that you believed in).
My Personal SRV story. When I was a kid I grew up very poor. My family and I lived in a bus traveling the country and working at flea markets to make money. One year in the early 80's we were in Denver, and SRV was doing a record signing at a Tower Records. The sign said: Have BBQ with Stevie Ray Vaughan! We pulled into the parking lot, because free food, right? As we were in line, disheveled, long haired, some suites came up to us and told us that we could not be there. Stevie overheard this exchange and let loose on the suits. "No man! These people are my friends! You guys come up here and hang out." Stevie brought us up near his chair, put my little sister in his lap and continued to sign records. He let me hold his guitar, and showed me how to play my first chord. He was an awesome soul. He saw us as people rather than poor homeless hippies. I wish he was around still.
For those that can afford it, and are not subscribed for Carl's pay-to-learn service, please consider donating on his website so he keeps this stuff coming. I've been playing for 35+ years and have the chops, BUT, time is not a luxury for me (family/career). This guy saves me considerable amounts of time by putting this stuff out there. More time to play and less time listening to tunes at 1/2 speed!
Just wanted to say that ever since I was introduced to SRV by my uncle when I was a child, I've wanted to play just like him. I didn't hear Lenny (first time I heard it was the El Mocambo set) until I was 28 years old, and as soon as it was done playing, I went online and ordered myself a guitar and amp. Thanks for making these lesson videos. This one is at the top of my bucket list and I will never tire of playing it, even if I'm not playing it well. Thank you!
Carl! I’ve never been as excited for a guitar tutorial video than I was when I clicked on this! This is my all time favorite instrumental song. The most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard! This is what I’ll be doing this weekend. I’ll definitely be stopping by your page to donate and help the cause, because this makes my day so much. Thank you brother.
First time playing a guitar. This is probably not the best song to start out with but I’m making progress. It’s slow and it’s sloppy but I’m a week in and about half way through the video. Here’s to the next week of learning. Thanks for these great videos!
Starting by learning a song like this will lead you to be less creative if you ever wanna improvise your own music. Learning the blues scale Stevie plays and some theory would take you farther than playing the intro to Lenny over and over. Many guys can do that it gets boring and makes for someone who can just play one thing and doesn’t even understand what it is.
Your an amazing teacher! Easy to follow, very thorough with explaining and point out the nuances of a song that might seem confusing to some and explain them in an comprehensible way. Very appreciated!
I’m coming back to guitar after a year long hiatus because life got in the way. In Vermont skiing with the family and I’m learning this on an acoustic, my fingers are killing me but I’m making progress on it. Such a beautiful song and a great lesson, this makes it so much easier to learn songs. Thanks Carl!
I tried to learn this from a tablature book, and the chord it had for the opening chord is physically impossible. Thank you for this, I can finally play one of my all time favorites
You're the man, I could totally be wrong, but I think SRV used his thumb for that low e string on the 12th fret in the second chord of the intro (and elsewhere throughout the song) Hendrix style. I've always played it that way and find it much easier to finger.
Another top notch lesson my friend. You are one of the best teachers out there. I was wondering if you could add a small discussion about the tone you use in your lessons. You mention some effects pedals on some songs but its not enough for my uneducated ability on effects, amps etc. To even get close sometimes. I really struggle getting the right tone and find I'm tone chasing rather than practicing a lot of the times. Thanks for your consideration.
Came here for a basic lesson but threw my hands up and just want the full cover then I’ll quit tryin’ and just enjoy the beauty. You have a talent sir.
Hey Carl, have been watching your videos for over a year now and you basically taught me how to play guitar. I've finally made it to play some SRV, so I was wondering if it would be possible to do a SRV tutorial for "Little Wing"? His instrumental is so amazing! Thanks for teaching me how to play guitar!
Great job. Thanks for making learning this song possible. It’s very difficult to describe each note string and finger whilst playing. I hope you make good money teaching guitar Mr Brown. 🎸. Jari.
hallo Carl…so great lesson, great teaching for the ultimate Stevie Ray. I love his music, he is my favorite blues musician, thanks a lot for this lesson and the others, i must have subcribe you
Im just a beginner with a strat and a blues junior IV and was wondering what effects and pedals do I need to play this song? I just cannot get enough clean sound or sustain without muddying it up?
thanks man i didnt play for some time but the last 6months been practising regurlarly srv my favourite so thanks . Got any tips on pick ups i could try to get closer to that tone
Big fan of this tutorial and solo. Just wondering what kind of effect you (and SRV) have for this song? Sounds like Strat straight to amp with reverb, but I could be wrong. Obviously to get the REAL Stevie tone you’d need his fingers lol but...
Hello Carl, thx so much for all ur effort! Truly appreciated by many im sure! Would you be so kind and share your signal chain in this demo please? Absolutely fantastic sound here. Curious as to what amp and pedal u used... thx so much
Thanks Carl. I’m sure many of us are just as interested in your sound as well. I don’t know what the hell (or how) you’re doing some of those chords! I know Stevie used his thumb, I’m doing the same, easier..for me at least.

By far, my favorite SRV song. I wanna say thank you to his wife for inspiring this song.

God speed brother, hope you stayed with it
you ever feel like some songs just HAVE to be played on a strat
Argh my Tele don’t have a tremolo arm but yup a tobacco sunburst Strat just hits different
Prs with single coil option is not to bad either😉
The vibrato would fit nicely on a Jazzmaster
strandbergs with singles can sound just as good or better in my opinion
Great comment 👌
