  • What's it like to feel like a foreigner in a country you were born and raised in? Aju was born in Japan. Her father is from the Bahama's and her mother is from Aomori, Japan. She was born and raised in Japan, but still feels like she doesn't fit in. Despite being more fluent in Japanese than English, it's hard for Japanese people to accept her as a friend.

Nothing “gets” to jerks like this better than to wait, say til the taxi ride is over, then to say something back to them in their own language, “By the way, I understood everything you said. You should be ashamed of your ignorance but that would require a level of honor that you don’t have.” Then walk away. I’m a USAF brat, partially raised by a German nanny and spent a “chunk” of my childhood in Germany. Once upon a time, I was fluent in German. I got my kicks doing this when, as an adult (and a soldier), I went back. The facial expressions that came from closing the trap were priceless, but alas! This was way back in the 1980s, no such thing as a smartphone camera…

I'm Japanese & African American. I'm 73yo, seems nothing has changed. I've been told that I was not Japanese, that my name is made up trying to be African (by a white person). My Japanese ancestors told my father that he should not have children with my mother because I would turn out funny looking. I was not able to participate in a private industry program because I was light skin with 'good' hair. Its beautiful and rough being mixed. Beautiful because we are of more than one culture and innate 'racial/tribal' traits/memories. Claim what you are, ignore and know that people who try and impose their opinions on you about who/what you are, are in fact, rude, ignorant and need to be ignored.

She is allowed not to be perfect and lack discipline as well. She’s unique in that environment and I encourage her to capitalize on that, alone, in that Japanese environment because she can. She is worthy to make mistakes, not be perfect and receive opportunity as anyone else in that country. She should find someone like her so she would not bare this all alone. She is baring a very heavy burden on her own and people need to stop speaking on it in a corrective tone. It is hypocritical and insensitive. The dismissive and corrective comments shows the ignorance of people on biracial plights for those who bare this burden. I think life would be a bit easy for her here in America, though. I will pray that GOD sees her through that visceral hate down under and off the scenes. People like to hide their hate and don’t possess the courage to expose it because they know it’s wrong and simple to ailienated anyone based on their differences. Cowards.

I was born in Japan, but raised in the United States. I went from elementary through high school and never saw another Asian face. I felt the prejudice and discrimination and ended up fighting a lot!!! Joined the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era and gravitated toward hanging with mostly the blacks. During my military career I was fortunate to live in Japan for about ten years. I soon realized that the majority of Japanese are very prejudiced, but they won’t admit it and in fact they get very angry if you mention it. They are unfortunately a pure blood thinking society and discourage any mixing. In the United States, I often felt the racism, but to be honest I think it’s worse in Japan. Even though I am pure blooded Japanese, I was never truly accepted in Japan. I married a Filipina and I’m glad I raised my family in the United States. It would have been hell in Japan!!! Please don’t get me wrong, I loved Japan, their culture and their people. It’s just I feel more at home here in the United States… (:

I have an half korean half white aunt. After my granddad knocked up some Korean lady she brought the baby back with her and my aunt was disowned at a very young age. About 50 years later my sister on this DNA test and we found my lost auntie and she told me how she was very alone and wonder why no one loved her as a child and it broke my heart. I’m blessed to have the chance to talk to her I just wish my grandad was still around he never stopped looking for her even on his death bed.

Older Japanese automatically believe that visible tattoos especially neck face or hands are taboo and a mark of the criminal underclass - if I was trying to live in Japan I’d have them removed or I’d just go to the US. I never got any because I intended to live in rural Central Japan. I already suffer from some harsh treatment because some shop owners or bus drivers etc think I’m a Brazilian (i’m actually German-American and a little French-Cherokee giving me somewhat tan skin). At times when travelling in rural areas I took to wearing American or Canadian flag or UCLA shirts sometimes to mark me as a North American.

She’s 17 years old now and had a very difficult time all throughout elementary, middle and high school due to her not being fully Japanese. She’s still struggling with feelings of shame and now has a dangerous eating disorder due to the need to fit into Japanese societal norms to not be fat. She has obesity in her genetic makeup. I tried helping from afar, but from what I understand, there aren’t good resources for girls with bad eating disorders. It makes me really sad because she’s a beautiful smart young woman.

I’m 63. I graduated from college in 1983. Back then, there was a girl in my dorm who was half Japanese and half Swedish. Her father was Swedish. She said she preferred to be in Sweden or the US. She said that in Japan, she was not accepted as full Japanese. We were all friends with her on that floor. So we asked her why. She said that it was her hair that mostly indicated that she was not full Japanese. Her hair was medium to dark brown and wavy, not the near jet black color and straight texture typical of Asian hair. She said people would actually stare at her in Japan. I remember thinking that was ridiculous. Now I hear this young woman in this video some 40 years later say she also is not accepted in Japan. I really wish people would just start seeing each other as being put here by God (or the universe, or evolution, etc.-whatever you believe in), and stop seeing people based on surface physical characteristics.

Its good to be proud of where you are from. It's ok to want to protect your ancestry. It takes a long time for people to accept new things especially in such a strict place. Born and raised in Romania during communism. Moved to America at 11 years old. I feel like a foreigner in both countries. Once I eventually realized people react accordingly to their societal programming including me, this reality became my oyster. We don’t need to blame nor convince anyone we perceive as wrong- live your life darling. It’s yours to be, do or have. Times are always changing - stay flexible my friends as we enter a new more peaceful consciousness.
