WOW! What a journey it has been since planting our garlic back in October! We've survived the pouring rain, multiple feet of snow and the coldest spring on record and the time has FINALLY come to harvest my garlic! Despite all the adversity I was optimistic based on how the plants were growing and let me tell you - my hopes were pleasantly surprised!!

I'm going to remember to plant garlic this year. I always intent to and never remember! This year is my year!
We gotta get them in this year!! Where are you based? If in Canada we can ship you one of our Garlic Kits :)
FUN! 🎉 I do experiments and forget what I did 😂. I walked back into our woods a week ago and saw a strange (for our woods) plant and it dawned on me that it was ramps!!! In 38 years, I’ve never seen them grow here. Then I remembered that the year before, my brother had foraged a pile of ramps and I asked for the trimmings. Yes! I just scraped up the soil a little, laid those scraps down, covered with leaf mulch and trampled them a bit for good contact. Viola 🎉🎉🎉🎉. Experiment forgotten. Thanks for the experiments right through harvest! Fun! ❤
Beautiful work Jordan. Love the selective genetics . Your laughter speaks volumes. Joy is contagious..
Joy is contagious indeed!!
Love all the experimentation! I haven't grown garlic yet, despite cooking with it daily. Feeling inspired to try my hand at it now.
It's such a fun crop! Highly highly recommend giving it a go this year. What zone are you in?
I was eating while watching this video, and right when you started pulling up the large cloves, the bolus of pasta in my mouth went flying across the room. I thought that the experiment results were interesting, but the small clove/large clove contrast could be theoretically exemplified via selecting the smallest cloves from the smallest heads, and the largest cloves from the largest heads. Good video!
Hahahahah that visual is amazing 🤣
How smart!! I always pick the bigger garlic to plant but never did the experiment. Will love to see what your result is. I also pull my garlic and now waiting for it cure. This is a strange year, my tomato are not doing as well though it was also because I was not watering and caring for the as much this year. See you in 2 weeks time for the result. Would love to know it!
Don't stress on the tomatoes! This has been a really tough year for them with it being colder! That's the beauty of gardening - mother nature reigns supreme!
Fantastic experiment, Jord. Many years ago the Gabriola Garlic guy - my guru of garlic - told me never to water garlic. His thinking was in our climate, we really don't need it and it makes the plants more susceptible to rust. Since he was growing on the Gulf Islands, he was even drier than me (just south of Ladysmith). The other thing he advised was to add 25% new stock every year. It has worked for me without fail.
Love that!! So much great knowledge to pass around!!
Great video! Loooooove garlic season!
Yeow!!
Getting me hyped!
Oh yehhh!
beautiful garlic harvest! I tried garlic last year for the first time, planted mid October (I’m in 5b) it sprouted, I covered it with garden straw and waited.. not a single on sprouted of the 90 + I planted. Looking for different varieties to try this fall!
Fascinating! Where are you based and what variety of garlic did you grow?
Bammmmmm !! Awesomeness Jord!! Kinda just as we thought eh ?! Again I'm wondering if you saw a difference with size on the first bulbs (perimeter of bed) compared to the ones in the middle? With the very wet winter/spring we had, we think it was a big benefit to have them in raised beds. We have friends that garlic basically "drowned" in their inground beds.
Great experiment brother !!
Cheers J&C 🌱🧄🌱
Yup definitely have heard of some drowning! With garlic I've actually had some really great heads right at the perimeter of my bed!
@@MindandSoil super interesting, we were thinking that might happen with our but sane as last year.
Cool to hear the opposite!!
So I just take a head of garlic break them apart and plant them. I'm doing this
Yeah it's like the easiest crop! I think of it as the gateway drug to gardening 🤣. With that said there are lots of little things that can be done (i.e. variety, depth, feeding) that will impact how well/big your garlic grows - so keep your eyes peeled for those videos as we get closer to the Fall!
I'm curious to see the difference between the "large cloves" that you planted and the "elephant cloves" you planted. How much of a difference (if any) were there between the two? I've always wondered if planting elephant garlic was really worth it or not. If the bulbs are similar in size, it may not be worth spending the extra money on the elephant garlic unless you really like the flavor of that variety.
On a side note: I think I am going to have to purchase garlic again this year. :( I had an AWESOME harvest, but I think I may have goofed during the curing process. After I harvested them, I set them on a small white metal table outside to cure in full sun. Not paying that much attention, we got rain that basically soaked them about a week after harvest. :\ So, I just left them on the table to continue to cure. However, I think I basically ended up "roasting" them in the sun. :( I haven't taken any of the bulbs apart, but just looking from the outside, the cloves seem too dry to be able to save for the fall to replant. :( But, at least I have garlic I can use to make garlic powder at the very least. ;) ;)
SUPER excited to see the results of your experiments! :D I typically plant the cloves 4 per square foot, but I may go with 5 this fall instead. ;)
Love this Gwendy! Yeah I'll definitely be curious to see how the elephant garlic compares! I was surprised with how nice the heads were. We'll be launching our garlic kits soon and you'll be sure to know once they are ready to order!
Time required to harvest garlic?
Also, low key hero of the video is the hori hori knife!
It put in some serious work!
Nice harvest. I had a similar one as well ensuring large cloves were planted.
Love it!
Love this experiment and it's perfect timing as I am about to do my very first garlic planting so I am gathering as much information as I can in preparation for that!
Thank you for making these videos!
Definitely keep your eyes glued to our channel here through the Fall - LOTS of videos coming out to make sure you're supported!
Awesome video. It would be cool to see you do a video comparing raised beds to in ground beds for planting garlic. I'm zone 5/6 and I wonder if my garlic gets too warm in raised beds before it can bulk up in the spring.
How do you store garlic for long periods of time from spring to fall? Sometimes my garlic just starts to sprout aftera few weeks
