- Hey, there, sweet pea! Let's talk about these beautiful flowers (not the edible plants) and everything you need to know, including how & when to plant seeds, maintenance, and tips.

First, this is the BIGGEST question: should I soak the seeds?
I personally don't bother with it. I've seen a lot of people drown the seeds. Also, if you have healthy, moist soil, you shouldn't need to soak them.
That said, you CAN speed up germination by soaking the seeds even for just a short period of time. If anything, I'll soak them for just the little bit of time that I'm prepping the planting area.
On that note, these can be sown directly. That means you want to make sure your planting area is properly prepared. That means clearing out old plants, aerating the soil, and getting moisture in there BEFOREHAND.
With that all taken care of, you're ready to plant them. I usually go about every six inches apart. For depth, I prefer to actually place the seed on top of the soil and then mound soil on top of that instead of burying the seeds.
With your seeds in the ground, it's time to water them in! Especially in many parts on zones 9 and 10, the weather is hot and dry this time of year. Taking time to properly saturate the soil is super important. I added finely sifted soil on top and water between all of the steps!
While your plants are doing their thing, you have some time to prep structure for them. I like using cattle panels, but other types of support work.
A few pro tips:
-Start planting around October and succession plant
-Don't overhead water
-Harvest heavily & often

Thanks! We're still expecting 90-100 degree weather the first week of October and I was going to plant sweet peas today. It's so hard to wait for summer to be over in the Northern Sacramento Valley!
Same here in Riverside,Ca. In the hundred next week. I have seedlings that need to go out but I’m going to wait
High Scent is my favorite. I like growing them at the same time as Love in a Mist. I love that combo.
In San Diego "Bonita" I knew many people in the 60's - 2000's that grew excellent Sweet Pea flowers. {My all time favorite smell} Am now on the east coast and miss my friends Sweet Peas, so wish me luck on planting my own. Am worried that my yard will not have enough sun. Thank you for a great video.
Thanks so much! This was perfect timing as I was planning on planting some this afternoon. Love all the great info you all provide! Especially helpful for those of us in San Diego :)
I needed this content. Thank you!
NICE !
Thanks for the show.
great tips! thank you
Just started my sweet peas (indoors) for the first time. 😊 I was quite surprised that they germinated in only a week! I have about an 80-90% germination rate too. 😂 I’m gardening in Zone 9a so I have the perfect spot on a trellis where they will get about 6 hrs of sunlight (mostly afternoon sun though). My fingers are crossed 🤞 that they will do well here!
Sounds like they're off to a great start!
Thanks so much!!! I adore sweet peas!! Too bad most people confuse them with the edible type
Please please make another video about passion fruit and winter care and propagating.
I have some sweet pea seeds that my mother gave me probably over 25 years ago. Do you think they can be planted and flower? I’m really hoping so as my mother has been gone for many years. I actually came across the envelope of seeds just recently and was surprised to find them. I would appreciate any advice you can share with me. I also will be planting in a very large planting container and will add a tomato stake for support. Thank you.
Very cool! If they've been stored properly, it's definitely possible. Keep us posted on how it goes!
@@SanDiegoSeedCompanythey were sealed in an envelope and stored in a closet.
@@corlissvargo1341 give it a go! Excited to hear more
I love all the tips in these videos and channel but train stop sound before the tips headline now is jarring 😅
what about fertilizing? can you share what do you feed them with?
Organic liquid fertilizer when they're small if they need it. You can do more if needed, but it depends on how healthy your soil is
Hate to nit-pick the editing, but seeing if you can silence or change the doorbell chime for the text transitions. The chime sound jarring and annoying, maybe if you want to keep it reduce the volume? Other than that awesome video, about to go sow some seed!
