  • From the 13 July rehearsal of the Concert de Paris (Bastille Day concert) 2015.
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Harold Arlen (arrangement by Chris Hazell)
Look out for the excitement at hearing this arrangement for what seems like the first time :-)

    LYRICS:
When all the world is a hopless jumble,
and the raindrops tumble all around,
    heaven opens a magic lane.
When all the clouds darken up the skyway,
There's a rainbow highway to be found,
    Leading from your window pane.
To a place behind the sun,
Just a step beyond the rain.
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,
    There's a land that I heard of,
    Once in a lullabye.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
    Really do come true.
Someday day I'll wish upon a star,
and wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
    Away above the chimney tops,
    That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.
    Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why, then oh why can't I?
Someday I'll wish upon a star,
and wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
    Away above the chimney tops,
    That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.
    Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why, then oh why can't I?
    If happy little bluebirds fly,
    Beyond the rainbow,
    Why, oh why can't I?

On Bastille Day 2015 we were staying in the Grand Hotel in Tours, France. After dinner we settled-in and turned-on the TV to enjoy the concert from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. To our great surprise one of the featured performers was our fellow Kansan--and Wichita State alumna--Joyce DiDonato singing "Over the Rainbow". We had seen her sing the song in concert in Wichita with fellow Metropolitan Opera stars (and WSU grads) Sam Ramey and Alan Held. Six wonderful weeks in France, and this was one of our fondest memories. Brava!

This arrangement is really super. Any one know of someone else using this arrangement? Lots of lovely modulations...very smaltzy.

Can someone post a link of the actual concert please? I would love to watch the entire performance. The orchestration , arrangement of this piece is just incredible.

Someone who knows this song's lyric before "some where over the rainbow"?
