    2-core flex is my solution for the ELV side of door bell transformers inside a consumer unit, round or flat, 0.5 or 0.75 mm2. No issue then with Band I and Band II circuits being in the same enclosure as the insulation is all rated to the highest voltage present.

    NIck, you do a terrific job on applying the bonding. I'm sure the owners will appreciate having the holes filled and the decorators should be well chuffed that the patching is already half done. Anyone who complains that you have not "leveled" off the bonding is a dope. For the job to be done right, it has to be applied in two steps.

    I'm a grumpy person who hates change, but I've just relented and got a Megger X1, and am loving the instant logging of data to CertSuite on my phone, even when there's no internet. My wife has noticed that I'm not writing certificates in the evenings. And I don't lose slips of paper in the van any more! (I wouldn't use an X1 for fault finding, the IR tests are toe curlingly slow!)

    As a note, could you not use POE on the ring door bell,
    I have a ReoLink and in the US it’s POE so no dedicated/shared fuse or power supply required!
    Do you also run network cable to attic and network locations? Nice neat panel!

    Question; When using the small magnetic r1 r2 lead to link out in the CU....how is that confirming the continuity of the cpc? I ask because my apprentice had a good reading doing this....and the earth path was via some pipework at the boiler....and I had deliberately split the cpc at a socket on the ring to prove to my apprentice that linking out at the CU this way does not prove continuity of the circuit cpc, and should a plumber arrive and insert some plastic pipe in the future... you now do not have a continuous cpc reading on the ring. So my question is... are are you 100% certain you have a continuous cpc on that circuit using this gadget, as I managed to prove otherwise??? Best to do end to ends prior to insertion into the CU to guarantee cpc continuity.....me thinks...

    Hi Nick,
    Love the videos but just a quick tip if you use the link lead you can get a good reading on a circuit which is actually faulty due to parallel paths through the bonding. You need to remove the cpc from the earth bar to test the final circuit.

    With the ELV inside the CU, this is another classic area of product design failure.
    The doorbell supply should have a seperate cover over the ELV terminals, locking, with a strain relief (this is all trivial to put together, we're talking a cable tie loop and a snap over shield), and the cable should just be slid in a piece of 600V rated PVC tube (.. basically the same as sleeving) while inside the CU. Alas, the manufacturers aren't inclined to design products to support the regs, and the regs aren't inclined to support reality.

    • @JC-jv5xw
      @JC-jv5xw 3 місяці тому

      It's the same with clip on current transformers which I have seem see people putting inside CUs. Needs 600V rated insulation.

    For a while I was wondering which earth bonding Nick had carried out that people in the comments were referring to. Finally realised that it is a product for filling holes in the wall. Does anyone know why it's called "bonding". It doesn't look like dot-and-dab board adhesive. Does it "bond" to a wall to prepare it for plaster skim?

    Nice job, but cat 5 isnt rated to 230v, therefore induced voltage is still possible. Have you considered using 2 core 0.75mm flex? it ticks all the boxes & easy enough to use. & i always fill my chases unless it's a re-skim. Customer then only have to final fill & sand to their requirements. Not all customers have decorators & plasterers on tap.

    • @kittsdiy

      why should it be rated 230V .. it's only used for 12V.. I do'nt think bus cabels for KNX/EIB are rated for 230V .. maybe this is the reason why UK is so behind on smarthome/domotix .. All video's on youtube are almost the same small fuseboard and still oldschool switches on 230V.. Here on modern houses/renovation we put every light with seperate cable/flex to the board / same for switches via bus cable or even cat5-6 cable .. al to the same large board . With combined voltages 230 - 24V DC etc ..
      My fuseboard is about 144 modules big ..
