Love your duff 9f motor reply(solution) response to Hornby. My Railroad 9f has undergone some serious mazak rot surgery. New motor covers and a 3D printed tender chassis(+ stick on car wheel weights) has made it a beautiful runner for about £14.

Shots fired back at Hornby! The Camera doesn't lie. A model should be able to run on any proper layout with different types of controllers. Really sad though causes it's one of the best looking model Hornby has ever made. Its one issue is that it runs poorly.
Thank you Sam again for an excellent video. Hornby's response was graceless, chiding and patronising, they have openly demonstrated the contempt by which they hold their customers! If you ever have to ring them with a complaint they are spiteful to deal. I and others in my club have found that their default position is that the fault does not lie with their products but with their customers knowledge and layouts. The answer must be not to buy their products!
Wonderful, we’ve not followed the entire live stream but wanted to know the outcome of that 9F motor. Quite the ludicrous reaction from H... If they want their products to tickle towards premium pricing, the least they should be doing is providing a quality motor. By quality we mean a high reputable brand such as Bühler, Faulhaber, etc. Not only will they perform accordingly, error rates are low and they are rated up to 52,000 running hrs... Those are not just a tenner but if H wants to sell at high prices, they should at least include said quality motor... Cheerio Sam, you’ve set them straight and called them out once again.
Thanks a lot Linda - haha yeah it was an interesting route for them to take wasn't it? Yes you're right, a branded motor like that would be completely justified in a £250+ locomotive, absolutely! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I shouldn't worry too much about what Hornby said it is probably someone in sales trying to fob you off. I had my car serviced the other day and asked them to check the aircon as it had lost its gas previously. The woman in the Dealer then explained to me how the aircon worked saying that it was a total loss system which was totally wrong. My car is a Ford and I worked on R and D for Ford for the best part of 30+ years as a Design Engineer, so I know a little about how they work. I just let her go on, she had obviously been told the wrong information by the marketing department. Why is it everyone in Customer Sales assumes everyone is stupid. I must admit my 9F runs really well and I have uneven track, but I do run it on DCC. It could be mine has a decent motor that is working properly.
Hornby did not say it was a new motor. They said it was new to the 9F model, subtlety different! They clearly have used the same motor. Like they did with the black motor that was in the big Pacific’s made 15 years ago.
They actually said that it was completely new for the models… again subtly different, and doesn’t suggest that they’ve used it in countless other models in the past…which they have!
I have watched your videos about the new Hornby 9F with interest. The model looks great. One thing that I am curious about is how would the haulage capacity of the new Hornby 9F compare with an early Hornby 9F where the tender was permanently coupled to the locomotive with all 3 axles and all these wheels had rubber tyres (MK1 Ringfield tender drive).
Good to see you calling Hornby out. Their premium prices should mean high quality in all aspects of their locos. But clearly it doesn't. Regarding their less than satisfactory dismissive response, I wonder of Gerald Ratner works for them these days? I'll be spending my hard earned elsewhere. Disrespecting your customers is the best way to kill your business that I can imagine.
when your paying over £100 for an engine one would expect it to run and operate correctly.if the cost of an dodgy motor is £1 and a good motor is £10 why do manufacturers , not just hornby, try and reduce the cost . the trade off in cost and reliability is insignificant . I for one would rather pay the extra £10 for gaurenteed reliability . I would think this applies to most people and would increace confidence in the supplying company thus increacing sales and ultimatly profitability . that is what these companies are in buisness for , profit .
Hey Sam, since you're looking for more locomotives to model and 3D print, would you consider making a Pennsylvania Railroad class R1? It was a prototype that was built as a competitor to the PRR GG1 to replace the P5a class, but the GG1 won in the end. The R1 looks very similar, but it's a bit rougher over all and it has a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement instead of a 4-6-0+0-6-4.
RE 9F Evening Star motor It sounded like Hornby were trying to say the motors are "new" for that model, not that the motors are a new design. I would've taken it back to the retailer to fix it.
Hi Sam, Pleased to see how you resolved the running properties of the 9F. Are coreless motors the future for model trains ? How about DCC in conjunction ? Thanks for sharing! Cheers
Hi Sam really enjoyed your update on the 9F. Very interesting letter from Hornby trying to blame your layout for the poor running of there 9F if this is there attitude to there customers when they make a valid complaint, I think they should give much more detail as to the minimum layout standard required to run a given model. For example model must be run with a feedback controller no set track points no curves under radius 4 and all track to be laid on plywood to within 0.5 mm etc. As for the actual motor they fit they are just cheep and nasty. I fly small electric helicopters and the motors fitted to these are far in advance in terms of power performance and efficiency than anything fitted in to a OO gauge model loco. In fact the whole model is far in advance in terms of engineering quality electronics and sophistication and are about the same price as many of the new loco releases! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for another great video. Suggestion/request: Reenact the famous speed record in OO scale. A4 Mallard with the new dynamometer car. Plus perhaps other cars that were on the train that day. Perhaps Sir Toppin hat could stand in for Sir Nigel. Might be fun to see. Can we match the speed as scaled down to OO?
Hi Sam, was at work when you did this so could not tune in. Just watched the 9F section. The shock is Hornby trying to pull the wool and saying the motors are brand new when they are in fact the same old 99p tat as before. I really don't understand why they make a premium model and then fit it with a cheap and nasty motor and then try and blame our layouts for it!!!!!
I would suggest before concluding the original motor in the 9F is underpowered, I would suggest you measure the voltage drop (under load) on you layout as it looks like you are only using the track joiners to conduct the electricity through the layout. Also the voltage regulation of your power supply is also a variable that should be measured if reviewing model performance. The advantage of coreless motors is they draw less current and generally have more torque compared to the 'iron' cored motor type.
None of that explains why the vast majority of the collection run absolutely fine. The Bachmann 9f had running issues as did the new Hornby 9f. This cannot be attributed to the wheel configuration either as the Hornby Railroad 9f has no issues.
@@guyclark2975 Wheel configuration does effect flange friction and clearly impacts on the 9F speed with the old motor. Sam mentions the old motor draws allot of current, suggesting an inefficent motor, however if you solder feeder wires to all track sections, and use sensible curves for large locomotives and a regulated train controller it's usually not a problem. For example my Hornby P2 railroad range 2-8-2 with a Zimo DCC decoder fitted has no problems under load up grades, even though it still has it's cheap 3 pole Hornby motor.

Hornby I believe, trade on their British trade name, rather than their current manufacturing quality control. During their good years, leading up to around 2010, many high street stores stocked their range, including Hobbycraft as an example. Then a change of Hornby Management & strategy, a drop in quality made the retail running cost to such retailers prohibitive. Two by two they dropped away. Poor casting quality 'Mazrot', & other issues, took their reputation away. During that rosy period, dealerships were treated well, but that became an awkward issue into the last decade. That's only my opinion, based on my working financial experience. Best wishes Sam, as you pass this time milestone, celebrating your dedication to our hobby. Brill!
hi sam. what an interesting letter hornby wrote you. at the very least it seems they watch your videos otherwise they would not know how your layout is set up .but this is besides the point as you have a vast amount of models that work well on the same track. anyhow trust hornby to go out halfcocked with their reply and not really check if the motor supplied was a new design or if this could be a manufacture batch flaw. if they were responsible for their models they should of asked you to send the model back and run a documented report. as what you have done.
With regard to the 9f, Hornby said, "...completely new for the models". This is technically correct, in that this motor has never been used in a 9f before. They didn't say it was a new motor, just a new application. 😕
Well it’s an entirely new loco - so any motor would be completely new to the model in that sense. If that’s what they meant, then the sentence has zero purpose or meaning.
Exactly! ANY motor will be considered New in a new loco design. They never said it was a new motor type specifically for the 9f. Your criticism of their crappy motor is correct. Also, their comment about the motor is "technically" correct, but they didn't actually answer the question you asked, "is this the same type of motor as used in the B12?"
Remember, that any response from Hornby has been past a lawyer, which means they're not going to answer in any way that might leave them open to attack: better to blame the layout.
Well done Sam. Once again, you fixed another Hornby model which had a faulty motor in its mechanism. At least the new Hornby 9f Decapod Spaceship is running perfectly well with its new coreless motor which I told you that it will make the model run much better. Plus, Hornby is full of bullshit excuses every single time Sam.
Among your rolling stock i see that there are no cattle wagons as livestock used to be transported by rail and there used to be ct truck models at one time but now you don't see them
I think you generally have a lot of bad luck when purchasing locomotives Sam, I bought 2 of the new 9F locomotives with no issues at all both have excellent pulling power and I too use a gaugemaster controller but mine is a twin controller both with simulation.
Re the 9f on Monday's Yesterday Hornby programme. Did you notice the chap admitting the original motor was too slow and he'd had to upgrade it to make it run better and it wasn't slowing down on curves? 🤔😂
Good morning again Sam. First of all firing shots Hornby. Thank you for that. So what you are saying is i need to buy a new motor for a locomotive that cost well over £200.00 will haul PROPER goods trains. Yes Sam i have got the same Hornby 9f that you have acquired. Not good. Having said that i enjoyed the Grid 56 and the BRUSH TYPE 4, marvellous,,BRILLIANT. Will you please review the new tooled Bachmann class 47. Thank you Sam 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Not impressed at all with Hornby's reply. This is just another reason why I won't be purchasing any of their models anytime soon. Their models are sub par, and over-priced. When you point out their obviously bad motors, they act snarky and lie. Not a good company!! You should send them another message (or this video) about swapping the motors and see what they say. 99% likely that you won't get a response lol.
I want to get into model trains and build a layout BUT I'm concerned that the trains aren't reliable these days. Every review seems to show big problems.
I always find your finger/resistance tests useful as it gives an indication of performance in the 'real' world, and has certainly altered my buying decisions on occasions. However, to be pedantic (not critical) I notice that your finger sometimes does not contact the track or is positioned at differing angles. You may inadvertently be applying reverse pressure to the loco too. How's about having a static block of something you place on the track to prevent movement in order to standardise the testing? It might also deflect any criticism of your test by manufacturers claiming variable test conditions.
Sam if it was your layout that was to blame then ALL the loco's and rolling stock you review would perform poorly and well, they just don't. Its defo 1000% not your layout, just Hornby being salty
How nice! Hornby throwing shade at their CUSTOMERS! There are other manufacturers who are more than happy to serve customers unhappy with Hornby. People need to protest with their wallets and I think they will.
If the original Hornby loco 9F motor is faulty then why did you not simply return it for replacement rather than go to the bother of replacing it with some other motor ? I know i do regardless of the manufacturer concerned .
P.P.S. you can always tell when a Company is in Trouble..! "They Start Blaming the Customer or Customers Track work..!" 'Up You Hornby', my Brand New Terrier Runs like Utter Crap where my 10 to 15yr Olds Models Run So Well..! On the Same Track..! "Bah Humbug Hornby.!"
Yes it was different, but even without a load the difference was night and day... and the wagons weighed more than the coaches did! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The motor might have been new to Hornby. No doubt Hornby got a bad batch of motors. If they are made in China by smaller manufacturers, you will get this as many have not mastered consistent quality control and the Chinese never throw anything away. Did the faulty motor have a coil set with an intermittent contact?
They're only new as far as they weren't second hand... and nobody thought otherwise for a second. Exactly, and quality issues with these motors have been very common. I managed to get reliable readings from each of the coils, so I don't think that's to blame... though both of the motors I measured were faulty, so I'm not sure what the values should have been! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I am an engineer living in China, and I ageee with you if Hornby is chasing the smaller and cheaper factories. The glory days of China cheap manufacturing are done. I would say hornbys failings are more about testing to meet the spec. I suspect hornby have their test rigs in the uk.. so testing is expensive. Add in, possible corruption. Yup.. half an rmb is important in China.. anyhow.. yeah.. blame hornby, not china. 😳👍👍😳
Poor form Hornby, I get that what they are saying is that they are confident in their tests but there was no reason to poke at people's layouts. Surely, when charging over £200 for a product one would expect them to work in all sorts of different layouts. Sam, your measured and Investigatory approach to the response was top drawer. I wonder what the motors will be like on TT, where evidence suggests this is where Hornby are pumping their cash.
I don't think Hornby were taking a poke at people's layouts per se, just making a valid point that any loco would struggle to run well on a layout where the track laying was crap.
Do 9f's of the distant past still run very well....... Yes.....WTF are hornby doing so wrong. Now they cost so much, out of reach of the masses that they should be perfect. I'd except it if this was a new invented hobby but alas hornby has been going decades.
Hornby tell lies! Also, why skimp on motors? Good ones don't cost much more than bad ones, and they're a small fraction of the model price, that makes a very big difference to performance!

18:20 lmao this is beautiful
It does seem as though Hornby using feed-back controllers may have given them misleading results.
Hi Sam I just looked on Google there are drawings for BR 10f and the gauge 2 ,10, 0
What's the name of the tanker he 3d printed and is offering for February?
Not impressed at all with Hornby's reply. This is just another reason why I won't be purchasing any of their models anytime soon. Their models are sub par, and over-priced. When you point out their obviously bad motors, they act snarky and lie. Not a good company!! You should send them another message (or this video) about swapping the motors and see what they say. 99% likely that you won't get a response lol.
I want to get into model trains and build a layout BUT I'm concerned that the trains aren't reliable these days. Every review seems to show big problems.
I suspect that Hornby has a bulk purchase contract for these motors and are stuck with them - and so they can only defend rather than offer solutions
Tbh the Hornby motor looks like from a cheap Hong Kong toy from the 70s the replacement looks a quality product and proves it...
Hornby got absolutely shat on by my guy Sam XD
I fitted a motor from a hornby B1 class to my B12 and it ran perfectly. (The B1 motors are almost identical to the B12).
Maybe Hornby were comparing the motors of the railroad 9f to the new tool one?
Which is a sneaky misdirect, if true
I always find your finger/resistance tests useful as it gives an indication of performance in the 'real' world, and has certainly altered my buying decisions on occasions. However, to be pedantic (not critical) I notice that your finger sometimes does not contact the track or is positioned at differing angles. You may inadvertently be applying reverse pressure to the loco too. How's about having a static block of something you place on the track to prevent movement in order to standardise the testing? It might also deflect any criticism of your test by manufacturers claiming variable test conditions.
Hi Sam , are coreless motors suitable for ALL transformers as I have read some brands cause burnouts
HORNBY should go to the corner of the class and put on that ..... hat!
Do u think this would improve the bachmann 9f as it has similar problems
Yes it probably would, but I'd really want bearings on the axles too, which would be much trickier to fit!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cool thanks Sam
Hey Sam it’s frank I’m going to start collecting ho scale freight cars
Love to see you doing n gage sam
Great printed model
thanks sam no 9f for xmas for me
If the original Hornby loco 9F motor is faulty then why did you not simply return it for replacement rather than go to the bother of replacing it with some other motor ? I know i do regardless of the manufacturer concerned .
Motor is now over £14.00
HI SAM
P.P.S. you can always tell when a Company is in Trouble..!
"They Start Blaming the Customer or Customers Track work..!"
'Up You Hornby', my Brand New Terrier Runs like Utter Crap where my 10 to 15yr Olds Models Run So Well..!
On the Same Track..!
"Bah Humbug Hornby.!"
Very Good Sam - Well you did certainly show up Hornby there!!! 🤔😉🚂🚂🚂
Man hot glues $15 motor into expensive model & shows up manufacturer. 😮
@sam, will you do a view of your TT layout build?
Now I don’t wanna be finicky, but the load with the two different motors was different.
Yes it was different, but even without a load the difference was night and day... and the wagons weighed more than the coaches did!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
17 hours till this is 24 hours or 1 day old
Several motors are available on the eBay listing. Which one of them is this motor?
Appears to have gone up to £14.33 + £1.19 postage!
Sam now i have changed motier in the class 47 virgin
I still think you should have sent 9F back ,if replacement was no good then you go mental !!!!
It’s so much better !!
Yeah! The difference is mind blowing
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The new 9F motor's got blue bits on it by God, why don't you own a can opener?
The motor might have been new to Hornby. No doubt Hornby got a bad
batch of motors. If they are made in China by smaller manufacturers,
you will get this as many have not mastered consistent quality
control and the Chinese never throw anything away.
Hello Sam where can I find the details of that motor please. David in Redcar
Starts at 5:18
Thank you! I'm editing out the waiting intro, it'll be gone once processed!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam how about your turntable never heard you mentioned for a long time Tommy from Hull
Do 9f's of the distant past still run very well....... Yes.....WTF are hornby doing so wrong. Now they cost so much, out of reach of the masses that they should be perfect. I'd except it if this was a new invented hobby but alas hornby has been going decades.
Hullo
Good video. But they owe you about 12 pounds per my accurate accounting method.
I missed it nooooooooooooo🥲🥲🥲🥲😭😭😭😭😱
Hornby tell lies!
Also, why skimp on motors?
Good ones don't cost much more than bad ones, and they're a small fraction of the model price, that makes a very big difference to performance!
wow
At this point Hornby should be called Trotters Independent Traders......🤣
