I saw Robbie and sly play with the backing band as part of the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday party with the Reggae set and Robbie had the fastest sound I've ever heard from a bass in my life. This was at Wembley stadium and going through a PA that big, the sound went right through my chest. it was so moving in more ways than one. I've never forgotten that. Beautiful bass player and damn fine rhythm section.
That's a great to point that out because first time guitar players feel self-conscious about it because people say if you don't play with the 2 fingers it won't sound good I use thumb fingers pick as long as you sound good it doesn't matter
It’s much easier to leave out any unwanted attacked while using the side of your thumb. For that big fat round reggae bass tone, that shakes you to your soul. The bass that move yo ass.
l watched a documentary with Sly and Robbie interviewed by Melvyn Bragg. When asked about his bass playing , Robbie said " me still a learn de ting , man. Never stop learn" How down to earth is that ?
When we were in Paris for a TV show with Sinead O'Connor, he asked me to take him to the Virgin Megastore ad he bought a tutorial DVD for bass players as well as a DVD of Curtis Mayfield live. He noticed how Curtis was strumming his guitar strings and thought he could try something similar with his bass. Next thing you know at the rehearsal before the TV show, he was doing just this and actually did it during the "Throw Down Your Arms" song. Amazing
Thank you for sharing these three related anecdotes about the two legends. I saw them live in Johannesburg, my hometown, one fine afternoon at a semi secret outdoor gig in a park, and it killed. The whole neighborhood had the benefit of Robbie's bass as it could be heard for miles around and bear in mind, they opened the festival. Sly was wearing a mining helmet. It makes sense if you know anything about Jo'burg. "murder she wrote" was their closing statement, and that's an anthem in South Africa. I mean they were so understated but so spot on. I have never witnessed musicians as relaxed and comfortable in their absolute mastery as this duo, to know they are humble to boot - it's simply beyond words, actually. It gives me hope for humanity.
@@danielhutchinson2133 I was in Jo'Burg and the gig was wicked. Actually, I took them to South Africa (beautiful country by the way). They came to play with SA musicians and there is a video of that in my channel. Great vibes (good musicians in SA, too!). We did another gig in a small club the night after the Jazz Festival and it was mad.

Robbie is set on 4 strings, but a number of bass players now use 5 or even 6 string bass guitars.
