  • Among the most mesmerizing and fascinating deep sea creatures is the Blanket Octopus, a cephalopod known for its dramatic, sometimes rainbow-colored webbing which connects its eight arms.
Encounters from an oil rig site and an expedition in the Philippines reveal the Blanket Octopus in its natural habitat as well as its impressive and majestic appearance.

So this octopus is using tools. They're ripping the stingers off of the Man O' War, gripping them, and then whipping them at their enemies with their appendages. Incredible. Freaking amazing.

It’s not much to read, but the fact is, a lot of people are gonna look elsewhere for the info simply bc they don’t wanna read a UA-cam video. I sent my dad some of these and he said “oh I saw that you had to read them and I just typed the animal’s name into search and watched other videos. I’ll get around to them, just haven’t yet.” I know him, and that is a straight up lie. Anyways, as much as I’d like narration too, I’ll keep watching them regardless.

It’s interesting how many deep sea animals show extreme sexual dimorphism, with full-sized females and tiny short-lived male drones. I imagine this is partly because of the scarcity in resources, as well as the distances such animals have to travel to find a potential mate.
Because if males were also full-sized, they would directly compete with females that they might potentially mate with for local resources, reducing survivability for both. And since females have to be large enough to produce and protect the eggs, which is many times more physically taxing than producing sperm, it’s much more efficient for just the females to be large.

Editor here: the channel is being taken in a new direction to focus on deep sea related content, including the continuation of Deepsea Oddities segments as well as other new kinds of segments.
I'm a film student and am continuing to make short films, however I won't be posting everything I make to UA-cam anymore as I personally don't think it's the best venue to share my work.
