The journey of “Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham” takes viewers from the heart of Scotland at Glencoe, the site of a great massacre and major clan feud to Inverness and the Culloden battlefield, the site of a great battle and historic turning point, known well to fans of “Outlander,” that molded Scotland as we know it today.

This is probably one of the best PR videos for Scotland ever. I lived and worked there in the early 80s and still like going back. Living there in the 80s (from San Diego) was a bit going back in time but a recent trip a few years ago revealed they caught up with the rest of the world. It took a few months before I was able to understand people and still difficult with some of the countryfolk.

I absolutely loved watching this series. Especially when they interviewed Alistair Moffatt. Alot of what he spoke about what the Highlanders do to prepare for battle are similar to what Maori do.
The Highlanders would place their eldest men up the front of the packs to lead the battle charge as they believed their courage (mana), pride and experience would filter down to the the younger perhaps less experienced clansmen following behind. Their energy and bravery would also spur the men forth and prepare them for the upcoming battle.
Before they would commence the charge they would go into a deep chant. The English soldiers witnessing their chanting display believed they were praying but what they were actually doing was reciting their genealogy. Their fathers, their grandfathers, their clans, their ancestry, their mountains and rivers. And as they recited them they would get louder and louder psyching themselves up going into a trance like WILD state - calling on their ancestors to be with them and help them to be victorious in battle and to prepare theirs hearts to get ready for war. This wild look of terror and death is pretty much what Maori call a pukana. Its the look you have to terrify your enemy, the last look you want your enemy to see just before you take their life. Sounds insane but its true...
The chanting also helped to encourage the Highlanders and remind them of who they were, where they came from and where they would go should they not make it out alive.
This is similar to what a haka is. Maori will call upon their ancestors to give them the courage they need to win the battle. They will shout at, mock and taunt their enemy. Tell them in great detail how they're going to die and psyche themselves up for battle.
As a maori I found this absolutely fascinating to listen to. I loved it so much I went out and bought one of his books. Very cool!!

We travelled Scotland a couple of years ago..and fell in love...thank-you Sam for your documentary.....we have travelled the world..but Scotlznd touches the heart strings.....thankyou
I have finally watch all episodes in a Binge watch, so now I am going to see it again at my own space....I have so many reasons to love Scotland, my mothers first love was in 1945, when the end of the war was in sight and she and He fell in love, he even asked my Granddad´s permission to take my mother as his wife, but she was only 15 and he had to wait for at least 3 years.......His name was Freddy Piper! I assume he was a great soldier, and for years I have tried to find him of course with no results! So about 20 years ago I moved to Spain, and got a great job In Galicia, Vigo , but I was absolutely overwhelmed with their culture! The flats had a French touch, the language is absolutely different as the common Castellano as is the Spanish language......(Many Dialects are still over Spain) So, here comes my reason why I am going on about Galicia/Galeic......I have been to Scotland, but briefly....only to take the Ferry to Northern Ireland, WHAT I remember that the stones (round, as a circle) were in Scotland and in Northern Ireland and as I remembered as well in Galicia!!! I am so intrigued and probably have to do more research that the Folk Music In Galicia was all about Bagpipes......... @@samheughan3241 Yes but it was in the 1960’s when there was a smallpox outbreak and we couldn’t go beyond Glasgow. My mother later went onto to discover and spend a lot of time in the Outer Hebrides and the Orkney Islands. She absolutely loved it!!
I hope to visit more but finances prohibit. I love to go to the Highland Games where I live. I LOVE bagpipes!!

Okay, I don't know if I am limited to one post, but ladies, you really need to get Starz. If Outlander doesn't come out this year, Men In Kilts will definitely be worth the membership fee. I'm on the 2nd episode and there is a special reward at the end of that episode. I had to rewind it a few times. I won't give it away, but Sam was amazing! 😁
Oh my gosh! I just got on my TV this morning and Starz is running a special with a 6 mo subscription, of course I will have to renew for the new Outlander episodes. I'm hooked as always! Much as I enjoyed this, as a Scottish resident, the continuity was absolutely brutal. For those not native to Scotland it wouldn't be that noticeable, but for those who live here, that road trip was all over the place.
And some mistakes made along the way, it's a "wee Dock n Doris" not Jock! A real Scotman would know this. They did jump about too much , but I'm going to watch 2nd series to see what and where they come up with! From a real Scot, living in Canukeland!
Fun fact: Graham McTavish is the voice of Vlad "Dracula" Tepes in Netflix's Castlevania series
