I was a Farrier for 30 years [oh my aching back] shod mostly TN Walker Plantation and Walkers that were trail rode also. I retired 5 years ago just finished up a two day seminar just to see what was new. Believe me things have changed for sure. And I can tell you the Farriers of today properly trained thru a Farrier School know what they are doing. And yes some of the best today are Ladies. They have that magical touch.
The summer of 1969 I studied the physiology of the horse from the shoulders down under DH Canfield at the University of Tennessee. We made our shoes in the forge. I came home to Louisiana, finished College and went back to the farm and 14 horses to trim and shoe. A lot has changed, but the basics remain the same. Great video. I learn some new tricks. Stay healthy. I'm still on the farm, but the horse's feet are trimmed by a much younger man.
this man is not only excellent in this all procedure,,he gives great advises and I feel like I have learned a new skill ,,,also the animal felt at ease with him..thank you so much, Sir !
Hey gidday mate i am watching your video for the 10th time and i really do findbit relaxing i love watching you do your work on the horses well son good sir thanks for sharing kind regards Gregory lee from Melbourne Victoria Australia😁🖐
I grew up on a big horse and wheat ranch. At one time we had more than 30 horses, so on the days when the vet or the farrier was scheduled, it was a big deal. We had several farriers over the years, but one stands out in my memory, probably because he was the longest-running one. I don’t remember if my parents asked me to do it or if I requested the task, but I used to hold the horses while they were trimmed and shod. It was a lot of work for the farrier. He didn’t use a stand of any kind, but held the horse’s foot between his legs. He had a small forge and anvil. Some of the horses were calm and cooperative, some danced through the entire process despite my efforts to keep them still. Occasionally the farrier, whose name was Mike, would get angry and frustrated enough to hit a horse on the flank who was causing trouble. As a teenage girl, this was offensive to me so I never really warmed to him or spoke to him much. He was diffident and I was shy so that suited us both. I loved watching the process of cleaning, smoothing and leveling the hooves and fitting them with shoes. I would get stressed if I saw that a hoof wasn’t ready for the shoe but Mike was on to fitting it. He always caught the error before he actually fitted the shoe, so eventually I learned to trust him. It was immensely satisfying to end the day with the horses-and one donkey!-trimmed and shod and comfortable. The donkey was trimmed only, no shoes. The image foremost in my mind when I think of these long gone days is the sweat running in little rivulets through Mike’s close-cropped hair and dripping off his nose. He was a very hard worker.
Awesome job mate you did yourself proud buddy and the horse knew you were helping him what a good horse well done mate awrsome job kibd regards Gregory Lee from Melbourne Victoria Australia. 🤠🤠😁🖐.
Your brain must be verg tiny this young man shoeing preparing horse for shoes is a very good teacher with his skills & trade i am learning something new & good for my brain .
Funny you should mention that. I have no interest in learning how to be a farrier, but I watch these type videos because I too find them very calming, almost like a meditative state.
Your work ethic is amazing, Sir! Much gratitude for your kind & gentle touch with the very lucky 🐎 horse. I'm certain she's galloping in the wind with her main & tail flying in relief. No longer in pain is the name of the game. You released her spirit.🏆 Your diligence and detailed professionalism was clearly evident in every move you made. Thank you for allowing the world to see what it takes to be a skilled & compassionate Ferrier. 🙏 R E S P E C T TO YOU, Sir, from N.W. Arkansas, 🇺🇸!!
You took such great care and attention with this horse. Fascinating to watch and how blessed are these people to have such a thoroughly good farrier attend their horse.
Would love to see a follow up video to see how well the hoof healed. Wonderful work! It's hard to believe that someone let that poor horse's hooves get into THAT bad condition.
You are a great craftsman with a very caring and compassionate approach knowing the pain tolerance and anticipating the horses movement for its safety as well as yours, fantastic job with the epoxies and final seal coat.
You are a truly beautiful person how you repair the hoofs and blacksmith of trade I only seen in movies you are a artist at your craft God bless you and your family…. Philadelphia
Hello and the width of your serving your loved ones, peace be upon any human being who help animals easier for life, although they get little wage. Thank you for my dear admin
That is the worst hoof I have ever seen. That poor horse! 😢 I learn something new every time I watch these videos. I'm so thankful there are people out there with these skills, that can help these animals who can't ask for our help, but, depend on us to look out for them.
Sadly, when I was working as a farrier's mate, I saw horses and donkeys with feet in worse condition than this. And ALWAYS from the same cause; neglect by ignorant and / or uncaring owners!
Wasn't there an old saying, no foot no horse? Great technical patch job? Is that the correct term? You are a master at what you do. Keeping the horse in mind first. God Bless for saving another of God's creations.
I would really like to have a running explanation of what and why you are doing particular things. It is so interesting and yet I do not understand the purpose behind and potential results of not removing certain parts of the hoof.
Lyreh Life - You may want to check our playlist for trimming hooves on our channel. Altogether, the info may help to answer your questions. Each one individually is sometimes not detailed enough with the explanations - but we keep working at it to provide more answers!
Correct me if I'm wrong and I apologise if I am way off base here but .... Wtf were the owners doing the entire time while the horses hooves declined. I understand she had an abscess which (because of the state of her hooves in this video leaves me feeling suspicious) forced them to leave the hoof alone while it healed. That being said, even her other hooves are chipped and overgrown. She is a beautiful horse and deserves to be cared for. It's rewarding work to clean and care for a 🐎 horse. Barring some uncontrolled unforseen trauma it is not difficult to maintain well manicured hooves and a healthy coat. Like I said correct me (with an explanation) if I'm wrong but my experience caring for horses leaves me praying she receives better care in the future, possibly with new owners if they cannot/ will not provide the appropriate love and care for this beautiful animal.
I have a friend with a sanctuary farm that gets horses in bad shape all the time. Many are rescues from auction houses. No idea what this horses story is so I'm not commenting.
Olá caro SR. Parabéns excelente trabalho. Entendi o seu esforço e dedicação com amor para a recuperação desse belíssimo animal. Um grande abraço de Portugal felicidades e muita saúde.👍👏
Absolutely loved this video! Keeping in mind that I know exactly zero about horses, can anyone tell me if the horse can tell or sense that the people are helping him/her? I only ask because it seemed to be so relaxed and patient considering how painful the hoof looked.
Ive only viewed 1 other video of horse trimming before (one of yours) I actually can’t believe what can happen to horses hooves & what can be done for them. However I can’t understand why the owners didn’t arrange for you to come earlier? Very interesting 😊🇦🇺
Muito bom o trabalho deles, e melhor ainda é a paciência e dedicação com os animais, era como meu esposo amava os animais e mais o cavalo que era a especialidade dele.

I just have to say it’s nice to see someone with sharp tools. That knife cuts through like butter. Kudos!!
Was this a rescue horse? Her feet are in atrocious shape poor girl. They must have been quite painful. I’m glad to see she got the care she needed.
At this stage she wasn't in pain. It seemed like a rescue but in fact the owners just didn't pay attention like they should have regarding the feet.

Imagine the relief this horse feels, not having its hoof flex, driving dirt up into the inner structure with each step!

Why would anyone let their horses feet get in such a mess? Loved watching this video. Great job.
