I'll tell you something crazy. There's a virtuoso organist named Jimmy Smith. In '92 he was still playing heavy jazz, a lot of it on the circuit overseas. The guy sitting the second chair over from Preston looked EXACTLY like a young Jimmy Smith, and little Jimmy just smiled as if "that's nice Billy." Eerie.
Honored to meet him in his last yrs . He was a client of my barbershop. Nice guy. Lived in the neiborhood. As he got his hair done , he'd always be humming
The Organist that hugged Billy at the end, was also a wonderful person & musician, Matthew Bureal, who was the Minister of Music at my church in CA. RIP❤
Billy Preston was NEVER under rated. Everyone knew and gave him his prompts and ovations. He was only underrated by those who knew nothing of him.He was world renowned. You can't be under rated with that title.

Billy Preston loved playing especially in the church. One of first to make the Hammond model B3 to walk and talk back in the day considering when he came out the in 50 and 60 the B3 was a relatively new instrument. Did anyone see what he did on bass pedal? My God today. May Bishop Calton Person and Billy Preston rest in peace.

I got a brand new 8 track player from my Dad in 72 with a Billy Preston tape. We went to GMWA in Chicago. I got on the elevator in the hotel with this guy with a huge Afro. It was him,, we stayed friends through out the years Very humble down to earth God fearing man.
Many, many yrs ago...I'm about 10 or 11 at that time. My Mom is getting me ready for church...and we're listening to 96.3 WHUR, like we always did on Sun. mornings. And Kames Cleveland is in DC, for some kind of COGIC convention. And he's a guest on this radio program. The guy speaking with him, asked him who was the best singer he knew of...he said, oh, that's "Ree (Aretha). And he goes on to say Aretha's father, "sings better than his daughter". Guy asked him,, who was the best piano player, he knew. And he said "Inez Andrew's oldest boy, Richard" ..and then the guy asked him "who wears you out on the organ, Sir?". And without missing a beat, the King of Gospel, said "Billy Preston....Billy Preston is the best organ player in music. Can't nobody touch that boy on the organ....no, Suh".
You know as I looked at this segment. Billy Preston on this organ as he plays so very very well. And Rev. Carlton Pearson. Standing there beside him. Today they both are gone home to be with God. RIP May God bless the both of them..✝️🙏🌎❤️
I back in 1973-1976 played the Hammond B3with two 122's at a very popular resort in Louisiana " Hodges Gardens" in the supper club that was one of the songs Misty ,you are a very fine Hammond organist and your Leslie sounds wonderful❤❤❤❤❤❤ Marty.

The Hammond B3 came out in '55. However, it was not "new" it was the fourth generation of the Hammond organ, which was first introduced in 1935.
