I am so glad to hear that Cotrubas' Traviata is the preferred version to so many because I absolutely share that feeling. What her voice projects is so unique, so sweet and with a grief tone that no soprano comes even close to express. Indeed, Ileana truly is THE Traviata and she never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I have enjoyed her priceless portrayal of Madamigella Valery.
if the Callas, Giulini, Stefano would be in better sound, it would have been my go to version. But it's probably this one now. I feel that Sills, Gedda, Ceccato (1971) is highly underrated.
When I bought this Traviata in the early 80's I was so impressed by Cotrubas voice that to me She is Traviata👑 & that beautiful high E was spectacular. In the 70s she was considered the best Traviata of Her era by many. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
She is a moving Violetta, but not a complete Violetta. Her florid technique was not fully up to the standards of the first act. She does quite well, but is unable to sing any of the trills in Sempre Libera, and the coloratura has her at the limit of her self-admittedly limited technique. Compared to other Violetta's I've heard recently, she's great. But when you listen to young Callas sing this, you are in a different dimension altogether. Same with young Sutherland, though her expressivity always left a lot to be desired.
Ah, you collect versions, too, eh? Please suggest some of your favorite opera recordings. Some better include Dessay, Garance, Damreau, Bjorling, Prey, or Gedda. :)
SandViolet I don’t own quite as many versions, but have heard many more & agree w you that Cotrubas is the v finest “on record” as well as on stage. A soprano who really embodies the sweetness, the sincerity, the difficult straits in which Violetta Valéry finds herself. There are so few.
mckavitt it's from 1981 live from the MET. I recorded it but sad to say it was not a good performance by Cotrubas. Cotrubas later said that she was not in good voice that evening. There are no live tape performances that I know of. I would highly recommend her Rigoletto live from the MET 1979 with Domingo & McNeil. That ☝ is available on DVD & COTRUBAS gives a stellar performance! My favorite lyric soprano as well. Arnold Bourbon Amaral 👱🌏🌎🌍🎶🎵🎼🇺🇸🇬🇧🇫🇷🇪🇸
I don’t really see how you could improve on this. Equal maybe. But no better. Traviata requires 3 sopranos so the thinking goes but for these arias at least Ileana is perfect.

I find that Sills was a great Violetta, as well.
Straordinaria, una delle mie preferite in questo ruolo.

@@Shahrdad in verita' sembra un'orfanella piu' che una "dama" invasata del Terzo Impero.
Thank you for posting my favorite Traviata, the one musicologist David St. George suggested to me about 32 years ago.
Musicologist Dr. Rudolph Schnitzler did the same for me, about 40 years ago. Rest in peace, Rudi.
In che cosa consiste la grandezza e la bellezza di questa Traviata? Senza una Violetta e' inutile.
Großartig gesungen - eine meiner Lieblingsaufnahmen von dieser Arie
I own about 20 complete Traviatas and this one my favorite by far.

Kleiber best director(2004 RIP) ever and Cotrubas who capture the whole essence of Violetta Valery. It's my fav too...
I had this on videocassette!
Der Fremde Really?! I didn’t know it was filmed. Do you know why it isn’t on the market today?

La piu bella versióne di Traviata. Cotrubas Bravissima...!!
Cotrubas pare un'orfanella. Non canta un trillo. Dopo la Callas che Violette ci sono?
👍👍👏👏👏💕💕💕🌈💕
최고의 비올레타

marco cattarin, dopo la Cotrubas cerca di passare alla Callas e il "brano" e il suo acuto finale suo ti fara' cambiare sicuramente idea. Spero.
Perfect for the morning :)
Wow! Ileana makes this sound like if Violetta (Traviata) was a Disney princess and this aria a theme song for its movie
Not 2004. 1976
