Something non-food which is really useful is something called Storm Sure. It's a flexible glue which was recommended to me by someone at Timpsons as being a better glue than the ones that they use in their shop when the glue on my trail shoes melted on a really hot day and both soles were hanging off. It worked like a charm and the trail shoes have been back in action for months now. Works great for re-gluing on shoe soles, repairing splits in wellies, anything where a waterproof, flexible glue is needed.

I've been keeping a modest stock of powdered milk for years now. We don't use it, so, when it goes out of date, it's an expensive waste of money. It's also not all that easy to get the best stuff, soooooooo ... when I was picking up some canned food, ham hocks for the freezer, eggs to preserve, more matches, a refillable gas lighter (need to buy some gas ...), multiple packets of stock cubes, etc, I happened to pass by the baby milk section and wondered ... would that work? It's just cow's milk after all and, at the moment, it's easy to come by and could be given to someone who can use it before it goes out of date. If anything really catastrophic happens, it will run out eventually, but it would be a less traumatic transition.

Your point about not all emergencies involving a loss of electricity is very true. When the covid shutdown happened one of the really hot items in Canada/USA, and one that was often sold out was toilet paper. Families went from having Mom & Dad at work and kids at school 4 days a week to having everyone at home 24/7, so that's a lot more wiping of bottoms every day.. Having a camp stove & fuel, a supply of water (at least 1 gallon per person per day for several days + more for cleaning, pets, etc), will go a long way towards allowing one to be self-sufficient in difficult times. I live near the Canadian Rockies and we had a very early season snowstorm that started Sept 8, 2014 and dumped 45cm of heavy wet snow. Our power was out for 4.5 days. Meals were cooked on a camp stove in the garage. Every time I had the camp stove on, I filled up a large thermos (1 litre or more) with boiling water, so we had hot water for tea / coffee / instant soup until the next meal. Being prepared means that trials can be an adventure rather than a hardship - and cheese fondue really does taste better by candlelight.

Thanks for posting reminders. ❤ Ive also switched to using self rising flour. You can use it w milk to make sandwich bread without the need to kneading or rising before hand. I forgot where i found the recipe on YT. But its helpful to have.

One of the first errors I made when I started prepping, was buying a bulk lot of bleach as it was cheap - it degraded quite badly after about a year, so I tend to stock (as you suggested) bicarb of soda and vinegar which makes a good cleaning product. I have a lot of stuffing mixes stocked as they are so cheap and store well - I use them to bulk up meals like meatloaf, meatballs, stuffed peppers etc.

I recently sprouted some lentils which were left over from a larger bag which didn't fit in my recipe. They were great on my salads for the week.
I've used baking soda in a pinch for toothpaste and it works great!

Don't forget vegetable seeds, non hybrid if possible, as hybrid seeds if you save your own seed, do not breed true.

Love my powdered peanut butter, we add it to home made popcorn and to hot chocolate 🤤
Stuffing mixes nicely with couscous as a quick filling food.

Ir you periodically rotate peanut butter (turn jar upside down then back again) it slows the separation or at least stops it parting so solidly.

I've added things like angel delight which have milk protein and whey powder as ingredients, you can make them up with hot water, so they still have nutritional value for children.

Get a sack of organic wheatberries. Stored properly, lasts a long, long time. Can be cooked as a grain, or milled for flour, as and when needed. Whole grains of wheat.

I 'stockpile' prescription drugs as I can by cutting back where I can and refilling prescriptions ASAP. It is getting more and more difficult in the States, with the crackdowns by the insurance companies, who have us by the throat.

I have it all but disagree about pasta. It looks great forever, but get GUMMY and breaks up when boiled if allowed to be exposed to air.
    Great job!
