    Interesting Fact:
    At the end of Levi OVA (No Regrets), Erwin told Levi not to regret when Levi started blaming himself for the death of his friends. Erwin told Levi something like: "once you start regretting, it dulls your future decisions and others will start to make decisions for you, leading to death."
    In the end, Erwin started to have regrets about his actions so Levi made the decision for him, leading to his death :(

      I've been reading the manga for like 3/4 years now so I can genuinely say AOT has been, for me at least, a classic for a long while now. All the events talked about in the video have been read by many a long time ago now. What's coming in this next season is a paradigm shift that I think not all will appreciate, but for me and many others it's what solidifies AOT as a Masterpiece. The build up and then execution of Chapter 100 is so insanely good, it should be coming up around the first half in season 4 (Season 3 ends at chapter 90).

      Indeed. It honestly reminds me of what SCPO Mendez said to John-117 in Halo: Fall of Reach after the funeral for the Spartan-IIs who died due to augmentation failures. "A leader must be ready to send the soldiers under his command to their deaths. You do this because your duty to the UNSC supersedes your duty to yourself or even your crew. It is acceptable to spend lives if necessary. It is not acceptable, however, to waste those lives." Erwin faced that burden with dignity and honor, being both the hero who inspires his soldiers to victory and the devil ready to condemn them to death for the sake of the mission. And to the very end, he did everything in his power to make sure that the lives lost were always lives *spent,* never wasted.

    Not to mention both of his VA’s are phenomenal! Both embody the duality of the character. For the longest time, I didn’t know how to feel about him. Every time a soldier died, I felt it. I, like Levi, wanted them to mean something. But by his death in season 3, I understood and sympathized with him. The part that still haunts me is the moment he raises his hand and asks the question while dying just hit so hard.

      In the manga the Scouts have become more useless than ever because they do not have a Leader and Armin has done absolutely nothing just cry, it was better that he died this season and not ruin his character, it is the only mistake Hajime Isayama has made for give Eren a more leading role, the positive of this? No, it was obvious Armin would live because he's a main character unlike Erwin. Levi's decision still seems a little bit off for me. In no regrets it was shown Erwin was the whole reason and motivation for Levi to keep pushing on. One would think his selfishness would overpower the need for Erwin to be laid to rest but it didn't go that way and the only reason I can see for that is either S4 would be over much sooner or that Armin is a main character. There's nothing that would logically support his decision.

    Armin's dream is selfish, too. Armin wanted himself and his friends to see the ocean. It's similar to Furlan's and Isabel's dream of seeing the sky: they just wanted to see the sky for themselves rather than wished to free all the people of the Underground. When Armin arrived at the sea, he focused on the scenery while "forgetting" the plight of Paradis. Being fascinated by the outside world isn't problematic by itself, but Armin's purposeful ignorance is worthy of criticism.
    Erwin's dream is 100x more beneficial to mankind. He wanted to know the truth of the fucking world because humanity was in a dark deep forest with no knowledge whatsoever and his original motivation was that, when he raised his hand in the classroom. ALSO worth noting that Season 3 episode 3 makes it clear that young Erwin was perfectly willing to believe that his father's death was justified; if there was a good reason, he’d have been fine with it... which means he didn't figure it out until he joined the military, which means that his original motivation to join the Survey Corps wasn't his father's death, but the pursuit of knowledge.

      Erwin started keeping things to himself he never thoroughly explained why the basement is beneficial or what comes after to anyone; he kept the fact it was his dream to himself as he got older, that's what makes Erwin selfish. His comrades fought and died for something they believed would help humanity and it would but in reality Erwin wasn't doing it for that reason anymore. Erwin was sacrificing his soldiers for his dream, Erwin had lost the heart to keep fighting on; he wavered in his belief and started living for himself this is the reason Armin was picked. Armin was prepared to give his life so others could experience his dream Erwin wasn't prepared to do that until he felt so exhausted he couldn't live anymore. Erwin was only deluding himself into thinking it was for humanity Isayama's interview on Erwin's death explains all this. This doesn't just apply to Erwin either every older character seems to do something similar to Erwin when they begin to tire from life. It's as Kenny said everyone is drunk on something to keep going and Erwin became drunk on his dream.

    Erwin was my fav character, and i like how you say he was more then his dream, he was a sacrificing commander, who was selfless. In my opinion Season 4 would have been good with him, since we would probably have brain wars with characters, like chess. And i mean peoples in the series dreams change, like Eren and Armin. But one thing i disagree with is this, yes Armin was big thinker, he was smart, but at the end of the day, he had a goal a dream to, too see the ocean, so he had that dream pushing him forward, and in a state of war, the best choice is the Commander and not a 2 month recruit, yes Armin was smart, but he was emotional, which makes him weak, that's why hate him in season 4 because he can't make proper decisions, same with Hanji, she even wishes that Erwin was there. Let this be known the only reason why Armin was saved was for the plot, nothing else, not his brain, not because he looked cute, for plot, since Erwin's death kind off insured the rumbling to happen since if Erwin was alive he would have told Levi to execute Zeke, thus no rumbling.

      The 3 reasons why Isayama killed Erwin:
      1. To Marley have a chance to fight (the Declaration of War wouldn't have happened the way It did);
      2. For the Anime don't end quicker (even Season 4 wouldn't have happened);
      3. To gave Eren and Armin character development (with Eren, it succedded until chapter 139 while Armin was downgraded from wise to worthless and his potential was wasted severely like, why didn't he made a faction like Eren to oppose and truly become Erwin's successor or why didn't Armin developed a split personality like Reiner? (Reiner's second personality was like Marcel's personality, Armin's second personality could've been like Erwin's personality!))

    Levi's decision to not give Erwin the serum wasn't because of Armin or his dream, Erwin's dream was no less pure or valuable than Armin's. By giving Armin the serum, Levi didn't save him, quite the opposite, he dragged him back to hell and condemned him.
    Erwin was the best choice for humanity, that's not open for debate, but on those crates before the suicide ride, Erwin had been set free, bringing him back would be negating all of that. Worse, Levi would be bringing Erwin back as a devil and Levi couldn't bear it. In the simplest of terms, the humanity Levi cared about on that rooftop was Erwin's.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  4 роки тому +6

      *Levi's decision to not give Erwin the serum wasn't because of Armin or his dream*
      This isn't true at all. Of course, the reasons central to Erwin were obviously more important, but acting as if Armin's dream wasn't a factor at all is just ignoring what is presented in the story. He without doubt thought about Armin's dream, and acting as if he didn't undercuts the significance of the moment. He reflected on it when Eren explained it to him, and more importantly, the flashback to him listening to Armin's speech to the others before leaving wouldn't have been included in the build up to the decision if it wasn't a factor. In particular, Isayama included that flashback to Armin's dream, and then contrasted it with Erwin's answer about what he wanted to do after he learned the truth, comparing them. This can be seen in chapter 4 of the manga, and S3P2E6 in the anime, right at the end. As such, it was clearly a factor in his decision.
      *Erwin's dream was no less pure or valuable than Armin's. By giving Armin the serum, Levi didn't save him, quite the opposite, he dragged him back to hell and condemned him.*
      I never said that Erwin's dream was any less pure or valuable than Armin's, just that it was a painful struggle and that it was more short-term. Both of these are indisputably true and backed up by the story. And I outwardly acknowledged the fact that Levi was dragging Armin back by the emphasis on his desire to let Erwin rest and not return to the hell of reality.
      *Erwin was the best choice for humanity, that's not open for debate,*
      Well clearly it is, since the story debates it big time. It might be clear cut for you, but that isn't reflected in the story and it isn't presented as such. I never stated that Armin was the better choice, I just stated why he was a good choice. There were pros and cons everywhere - Armin had the more beneficial dream in that moment, Erwin had the experience, track record, etc. By the end, it's a very likely possibility that Erwin may have been more hypothetically beneficial. But that's not the point in this video and who is "better" for humanity isn't a significant question here. It's about who had ambitions and and attitude of idealism to live beyond the secret of the basement, who had fought enough and who had more to give. Erwin had no plans for the future, while Armin dreamed of it, and that means something and that in itself is something worth salvaging. It's a much more spiritual, symbolic and emotional decision than a purely logical one. He may not hope to live up to Erwin, but humanity needs that spirit that Armin brings as well.
      *but on those crates before the suicide ride, Erwin had been set free, bringing him back would be negating all of that. Worse, Levi would be bringing Erwin back as a devil and Levi couldn't bear it.*
      This was all a huge point in the video that I already elaborated on.

    • @txlitagabriela
      @txlitagabriela 4 роки тому

      Aleczandxr Okay, the reason Levi choose to let Erwin die is that he didn't want him to become a devil, he didn't want to bring him back to hell, we know that because those are literally his words. He chooses to drag Armin instead, which means Erwin's humanity was more important to him when making his decision.
      You mentioned Erwin having no plans and humanity needing Armin's spirit, but so far the implications of Levi's decision have been only bad. Armin has been CT almost as long as Erwin had been dead. Jean is squad leader, Hanji is commander, Armin is...? Where were the clever plans when the Island was being invaded by spies, when the entire MP is being poisoned, when the SC was being overrun with traitors, when Eren was able to disappear to Marley and start a war? It's not that Armin is a bad character, but Isayama needed to nerf the SC by letting Erwin die to keep things interesting. With only 5% of the story left, there's a possibility Armin will be able to stop Eren with "talk no jutsu", but of course, no one wants that to happen.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  4 роки тому +4

      @Talita Bueno
      *He chooses to drag Armin instead, which means Erwin's humanity was more important to him when making his decision.*
      Yes I know, and I literally said this. I quote, "Of course, the reasons central to Erwin were obviously more important, .."
      I really don't know what your point is here. I never said anything to the contrary and I even agreed with you.
      *You mentioned Erwin having no plans and humanity needing Armin's spirit, but so far the implications of Levi's decision have been only bad.*
      You're not arguing against anything I'm saying. Once again, I even said something to this effect (" By the end, it's a very likely possibility that Erwin may have been more hypothetically beneficial.") I didn't say that saving Armin has panned out well. So far, it hasn't. I don't think anyone would argue against that. But just because Levi's decision hasn't worked out yet doesn't mean the spirit and emotional logic behind that decision were undercut. In that moment, it was clear that Armin's dreams were beyond the basement. Erwin hadn't thought about it. Those are facts, and they were both influential, and the narrative very clearly communicates that this is the case.
      I'm not saying that Armin has turned out to be the right decision. I'm simply explaining the reasoning behind that decision, using evidence from the story. So when you say that Armin hasn't done anything yet post-timeskip, you're once again not arguing or countering any points I made. I'd ask that you please listen to the points I made, it would surely clear up a lot of things.

      Aleczandxr Levi remembering Armin's eyes before injecting him doesn't mean the choice was about him, it means Kenny's words also applied to him (we're all a slave to something) and this isn't a good thing because it means he realized Armin's dream would be ruined AND YET he still decided to do it. Even Isayama said that Levi giving up on Erwin must have been his way of allowing death to free Erwin from his enslavement, he also confirmed that Levi was influenced by his experience with Kenny during the scene.

      *Even Isayama said that Levi giving up on Erwin must have been his way of allowing death to free Erwin from his enslavement, he also confirmed that Levi was influenced by his experience with Kenny during the scene.*
      We didn't need Isayama to confirm any of that. It's quite clear from the presentation of the manga and anime that he was freeing Erwin (he literally says this) and that he was thinking of Kenny (we literally hear Kenny's words).
      *Levi remembering Armin's eyes before injecting him doesn't mean the choice was about him, it means Kenny's words also applied to him (we're all a slave to something) and this isn't a good thing because it means he realized Armin's dream would be ruined AND YET he still decided to do it*
      It's an interesting alternate interpretation on your part but I don't personally buy it. Sorry about that. There's too much emphasis on Erwin not dreaming past the basement and of Armin's "dreams" - both in the lead up to RTS in Uprising, AND in the actual chapter and episode leading into Levi's decision. Armin was used in contrast through his flashback, not in reinforcement. I'm not telling you what to think - feel free to disagree - but my mind is pretty set on this. I've thought a lot about it and I'm very confident. It's actually surprising for me to find a few people that don't think so, because I thought I was at risk of pointing out the obvious, lol. It's nice to see though! It's natural that such an amazing story would spawn alternate interpretations, and I wouldn't want to deter anyone from their opinion on this. I just don't personally think that to be the case.
      Also, to clarify, I never said the choice was "about him", I just said that he was a very important factor. Which he was.

    Alright buddy. You keep teasing me with Radiant Historia music. Now I NEED to watch that game being analyzed by you. Very few of the people I follow would be able to give justice to all the nuances of its story and characters, and you're atop the list.

      You're welcome, but for full clarity, even Patreon requests need to be approved as topics that I feel I'm passionate enough to make a video about. And Radiant Historia, while being a good game for sure, just doesn't fit into that category for me personally. So I can't imagine that I'll ever make a video about it. Very sorry about that, but I just wanted to be as honest as possible with you. Hopefully you understand. Thanks for watching, and all the best!

    Erwin is the embodiment of Robert Frost's quote: Happiness Makes Up in Height For What It Lacks in Length.
    If you're into MBTI, he's a fellow ENTJ.
    If you're curious as to what it feels like to be one, this video sums it up so succinctly.

    oh man right in the feels... A great video for my favourite character ! His last scenes were so powerful, rarely did I feel that overwhelmed with emotions. Erwin 's story makes me think of a Greek tragedy, as you said, he was tailored to exist in that portion of the story. He was not meant to go beyond. Levi's reflection on how, in the end, Erwin was probably "finished" and deserved to go in peace, is something almost taboo in society I think, and yet it makes so much more sense sometimes.
    I also connected deeply with how Erwin was so driven by his dream, and how he never thought beyond fulfilling it.. He might have found another dream to fill in the emptiness, but as was explained in the story, the war had turned him into a devil; there was not enough of him left to do that. Great character, great story, great analysis !

    Erwin: "Dedicate your hearts. Focus on the path to victory. Push forth on the road of freedom".
    Scout: "Um.. okay. So... engage the enemy?"
