  • Nearly all films have this disclaimer: "This is a work of fiction. any similarities to persons living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental." You've seen it many times, but you've probably never considered why it was there. Cheddar explains the surprising and unexpected history and reasoning behind this disclaimer.

Say you're watching a movie "based on a true story"
It's basically saying at the end: "Hey, that movie you just watched about a true story? Pure coincidence. We didn't mean to tell a real story. It just HAPPENED to be the same as a true story."

There lived a certain man, in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the Bible like a preacher
    Full of ecstasy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
    Women would desire
    [Chorus]
    Ra, ra, Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian Queen
There was a cat that really was gone
    Ra, ra, Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on
    [Verse 2]
He ruled the Russian land and never mind the Tsar
But the kazachok he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state, he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the Queen he was no wheeler-dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done
She believed he was a holy healer
    Who would heal her son
    [Chorus]
    Ra, ra, Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian Queen
There was a cat that really was gone
    Ra, ra, Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on
    [Spoken]
But when his drinking and lusting
    And his hunger for power
Became known to more and more people
    The demands to do something
    About this outrageous man
    Became louder and louder
    [Bridge]
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
    [Verse 3]
"This man's just got to go!" declared his enemies
But the ladies begged, "Don't you try to do it, please"
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute, they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us" they kept demanding
    And he really came
    [Chorus]
    Ra, ra, Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian Queen
They put some poison into his wine
    Ra, ra, Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
He drank it all and he said "I feel fine"
    Ra, ra, Rasputin

They didn't quit, they wanted his head

@TheOneJudgment I have found most of those "stupid" lawsuits have a similar story.
There was a story of a wife bringing a lawsuit against her husband for not clearing ice off the front walk so she slipped and broke her leg. Their insurance wouldn't cover it, so the only way to get the insurance to cover it was to sue. It was all over the news and talk shows - can a wife legally sue her own husband (you have to remember this was in the 70s when women had a lot less rights than they do now) and everyone was up in arms at the gall of a woman to sue her own husband for such a frivolous thing.
I won't watch those "true crime" shows anymore because I've had first hand knowledge how these programs twist the stories to make it more dramatic - till it isn't even true anymore, making a person look guilty when they aren't. :(

@Mohammed Khetran Watch the documentary Hot Coffee. This incident happened before the time you could pull up to the drive-thru and order your coffee pre-mixed. Add to that, cupholders weren't a thing. Add to that, the cups were so cheaply made that the lid was absolutely required in order to keep its structural integrity. Add to THAT, the coffee was kept at a much higher temperature than was needed. McDonalds had already had several hundred complaints about this exact thing. The narrative you've expressed was started, in a sneaky roundabout way, by McDonalds. The lady in question continues to be pilloried, even though her injuries were far more horrific than your narrative let's on. It was not a "trivial" lawsuit. In fact, her suit had a far greater actual impact on everyday life than anything a movie disclaimer ever had. Be nice.

There lived a certain man in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the Bible like a preacher
    Full of ecstasy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
    Women would desire
    Ra Ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
    Ra Ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on
He ruled the Russian land and never mind the Czar
But the kazachok he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the queen he was no wheeler dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done
She believed he was a holy healer
    Who would heal her son
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on
But when his drinking and lusting
    And his hunger for power
Became known to more and more people
    The demands to do something
    About this outrageous man
    Became louder and louder
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
"This man's just got to go", declared his enemies
But the ladies begged, "don't you try to do it, please"
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute, they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us", they kept demanding
    And he really came
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
They put some poison into his wine
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
He drank it all and said, "I feel fine"
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
They didn't quit, they wanted his head
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
And so they shot him 'til he was dead
    Oh, those Russians

The Tsarina did not ever have an affair with Rasputin (or anyone else). It was a rumor spread by Alexandra's enemies and jealous women of the time.
While she had a spiritual trust in Rasputin and the healing abilities he displayed to save her hemophilic son's life numerous times, Alexandra and Nicholas were extremely close and very much in love throughout their marriage.
Disloyalty was completely out of the question.
It's sad that this hint of a facetious rumor continues to malign her reputation even today.
Thanks to her relentlessly destructive mother-in-law, the poor woman could never get a break from the lies concocted to smear her reputation, and could never do anything right.
