Prusa XL update: Was the alpha firmware to blame?

    Original video: • The 5 tool Prusa XL is...
    Some commenters pointed out that my XL testing was all done wit the alpha release of the firmware and slicer. This is a fair criticism, so in the interest of fairness and transparency, let's rectify that.
    The original video was already long and the problems I was seeing were posted on the forums by others BEFORE the alpha releases came out, hence why I didn't include a roll back test.
    Hopefully this video confirms the problems are with the XL, not just the alpha firmware/slicer. Fingers crossed Prusa come through with some timely fixes.

    Glad I cancelled by XL before delivery, clearly it's a bit of a joke and totally rushed out. Looks like it's way off being actually ready. You can buy 5 Bambu X1 carbons for that price and they are in different league all together. Even the A1 which costs less than 1/10 of the price actually sets the gold standard!. Great review !

      Even though Bambu printers aren't open source, it doesn't matter much if the open source option costs you almost 10x more money and doesn't work even half as well. Sure, you may have to do material changes manually, but at least it works.

While I doubt the bad stringing you're having would be resolved with their hack (bumping the head to force consistent head attachment placement), it seems like more mechanical and technique fixes will be needed to make the XL shine.

    I will get my XL 5 head in appr. 2 weeks. I would think, that most of the hardware of the XL is near the final solution.
    The stringing issues of the XL seems to be related to the issues Prusa has with the MMU3, which is delayed due to those issues.
    During filament change, the Nextruder produces fine strings (called angle hair). These strings irritate the filament sensor in the MMU3 and cause a clog and an error. This happened also to my MMU2S a few times. But it is very seldom.
    There is a blog article from Prusa about this and it sounds, that they are on the right way. But it takes quite a long print with over 200 filament changes to test it.
    For the XL additional retraction and wiping to infill (I do not know if this is already an option in Prusa slicer 2.7) might solve or reduce the stringing issue.

    NO NO NO, it's not Prusa. It's because you're in Australia and all of the filament curls in the opposite direction there. See, the filament was made in the North, where it curls Clockwise, you're in the South where it gets all confused which way to go causing it to blob out. I will not be satisfied unless you relocate to the North and redo everything. I will be sitting here waiting for you to satisfy my eternally moving goalposts.

    Speaking from three years with the E3d toolchanger….
    1. z hopping is essential for multi materials. Turn that off and you will see nozzle crashing.
    2. Increase “Retraction on tool disable” to 11.2 mm for each extruder. This Retracts out of the melt zone BEFORE the tool leaves the print. As such the 3d print dogs approach becomes irrelevant since the material is moved up and out before the tool moves. Retracting out of the melt zone also stops the drool on to the nozzle seal which stops the string there as well.
    3. Use the correct temperatures. Prusa’s presets are way too hot. You have to operate so that the timing is correct to go to and from the melting point. Too hot and it takes to long to cool down.

    I think it's a fair comparison with the Alpha firmware.. because Performance was much worse for me without the Alpha. Stringing was wild but I just deal with it. Luckily on large helmets / prints it wasn't as big a deal with a litle bit of heat, but it's still annoying.

    So strange. I have basically zero stringing with polymaker and Jessie filaments on my 2-tool machine (.4 -> .8 nozzle sizes) as long as I drop the temps down to 205-210. And for the naysayers, the alpha PS and firmware have been sooo much better for me. Have had a tiny amount of stringing with PETG (far less than even the best print in your videos), but that was old stuff that has been sitting untouched in my dry box for 5 years in 30-40% humidity so I expected so much worse.

  • @hitf5
    @hitf5 6 місяців тому +2

    You are awesome for doing this, thank you. I definitely do not want anyone to think I am a so-called fanboy of Prusa. I have been a Prusa customer since the MK3 came out. Over the years, I have also been a customer of MakerGear, LDO for their Voron kits, and most recently Bambu Labs. So I feel like I can speak from a place of the experience I have had with having owned and used extensively around 25 different printers. I have also used quite a number of different types and brands of filaments, probably 90% of what is available to the general consumer.
    When the XL was announced I ordered two of them, one semi-assembled and the other fully assembled. As everyone knows, when Bambu came out with the X1, things changed quickly. I found myself using the X1 a lot for mostly all of my production needs and my MK3S+ less and less. When I did use the MK3S+, I did so because I needed something printed perfectly - that is not just looking perfectly but functionally perfect too including proper layer adhesion which I do not get reliably on the X1 due to the fast printing speeds.
    Well, the XL languished in production purgatory and I ended up cancelling one of my orders in favor of building a Voron 2.4 350mm from a kit I purchased from LDO. It was a long time to build this machine, and in the end I think I spent around $1800 for all of the premium parts and upgrades. I say this because I wanted to put this price into comparison of the XL.
    I have since received the semi-assembled 5T XL and have been printing with it sporadically for about 2 weeks, when I can find the time to play with it. Yes, it should be printing much better than it has for you - the stringing, blobbing, etc. is generally crap for this cost. But I wanted to possibly put things into perspective, maybe to justify my own purchase, but more to let people know how I feel from where I see things. I am most definitely not trying to defend Prusa in any way but here is where I'm at:
    1. This is a 5 tool changer, in a core xy style, with a fairly large build volume (granted they needed this large volume to fit the tools). I have had IDEX printers before (the MakerGear M3-ID) and so I feel like that was a pretty good introduction into independent head printing (though the MakerGear was extremely well built, it suffered from zero software support and in the end failed to make it as a company - they seem to be 99% closed now). I'm saying this because this is not just an XL MK3, the tool changing is very complex and just one of the complexities they had to design.
    2. The bed is segmented. I know on my Voron 350mm, the bed is subject to bending due to how large it is. So having a thin, segmented bed is another large difference.
    3. The extruders are all new. I know there is the ability to use the nextruder adapter to use standard V6 nozzles, but I'm not keen on using the adapter for hardened nozzles because I think they'll leak. Prusa really needs to ship this printer with not just 0.4mm nozzles in addition to the 0.6mm ones, but also at least one hardened nozzle so we are able to use the CF filaments they produced and demonstrate at all their events. Who knows when their hardened nozzles will be available again?
    4. A huge disappointment for me was that the enclosure is not available yet. I mean, I do not plan on printing PLA and PETG with this thing. I am more of an ABS / ASA / PC kind of printer person. I am not even going to try printing anything like that until the enclosure is available (though it's going to be such a massive thing after it is all enclosed - I'm not even sure I will have room for something like it).
    5. These print issues you are having, the stringing and blobbing, they should be solvable just like any other printer. I tend to think the 0.6mm nozzles being used for small models like this is a culprit, along with the print profiles not being as mature as ones for the MK3. The brush mod is possibly a good idea but maybe not necessary after further profile changes such as how it wipes after each tool change and where the prime tower is located.
    6. The price. Well jeez the shipping down under is a killer I will give you that. For me in the US, I paid less than $4000 including shipping and import tax. That's more than twice what I paid for the Voron 2.4 kit but I also did not have to build it from scratch and it is a much more capable machine.
    7. Prusa as a company has continued to be a leader as far as I can tell. I don't see Bambu or Creality or anyone else traveling the world for things like the Prusa User Groups meetups, etc. Showing off your gear at trade shows and maker fairs are nice, but I really can't spend the time or money traveling to places for the weekend just to ogle at machines that won't likely be ready to purchase for a while. The open source attitude seems to be a good thing for the community, maybe not so much for the company, but who am I to judge? Prusa reports expansion of their company all the time so they must be doing something right.
    Well, in conclusion, I guess I feel like while the criticisms for the XL are mostly valid, they are also mostly short-sighted with understanding this is a 1st generation of a completely new machine that has some bugs to work out that can probably be fixed with software and maybe some new printed parts (another cool thing about Prusa machines).

    There are some improvements regarding stringing behaviour in XL.

    • @OmDeLaTara
      @OmDeLaTara 6 місяців тому +3

      To help fight stringing and oozing deposition, the new just released PrusaSlicer 271 beta now implements ramping travel moves.
      To fully harness the stringing reduction potential of the ramping travels moves a new layer change strategy is implemented while the ramping travel moves are active. Instead of going straight up to the next layer the printer head follows a helical ("screw thread") trajectory while changing layers.
      !!! Helical layer change is used only if use ramping lift is enabled in extruder settings and the slope is nonzero and less then 90 !!!

    I'm not that knowledgeable about the XL but I think Prusa is trying to fight the stringing and oozing with Prusaslicer updates. The latest 2.7.0-Beta1 has a new feature, namely "Ramping Travel moves". This seems to be specific for the XL, but wrapped in a regular (beta) slicer update. This could be an solution to one of the problems that many have with the machine. But then it needs to be adopted by other slicers like Orca Slicer to make it viable.

    I sure hope you keep posting on this. I also bought a multi head and at this point I am not a huge Prusa fan. I think this can be fixed and I am in hopes they will not ignore these issues. You are spot on!!

    yep , it is clear prusha rushed this one out the door , it maybe needed a month or 2 of tuning to hit the shelves .
    its really annoying and heartbreaking seeing a prusha product this bad ,but we love prusha and this tough love helps us the consumers and helps them to stay in shape and deliver actual good product.
    thankyou for your honesty and review

    @YGK3D posted a video a few days ago with a fix that looks like it'd be applicable across all Prusa XLs for the layer shift issue - TL;DW: the extruders have a little bit of slop around the Z axis that results in misalignment when docking, which he fixed with a bumper in the +Y -X corner and a couple of lines added to the tool change g-code to bump the extruder back into alignment.
    Kind of astonishing Prusa didn't get/spot/fix this issue in development considering how ubiquitous it seems to be though.

    Problems I'm seeing are down to a serious design flaw with the tool changer mechanism. The rigidity of the Nextruder toolhead to the carriage just isn't there - it wobbles all over the place. The system needs a complete redesign, IMO.

    If you have the patience for it, Prusa has a blog post about new changes in PrusaSlicer 2.7 on their website under the XL buying page. There is also a YT unlisted video, that shows it printing a dual color Benchy in 36 minutes. The path the heads takes is different than how yours printed. It does a wipe on the purge block before and after it's done printing the model. So, I think they implemented what you were suggesting. Anyway, would love to hear if the new version of PrusaSlicer solves anything. I didn't take the plunge to buy the printer, since it's so expensive and backlogged. Plus, after watching/reading so much about it's problems...It just isn't polished to mainstream use yet. Best of luck! Keep us updated as you continue to tinker and test it!

    hmm, I'm a little disappointed with that result. I had expected Prusa to have done more, it had worked out of the box, especially for the very high price. A printer for the price, it just has to work.
    I'm afraid they will lose market share to bambu lab if they don't do something about it quickly.
    Think they may have leaned back a little too much in the years when they have been market leaders. A shame

    These are pretty standard problems for a toolchanger unfortunately. Everything (filament temp, retractions, EM, pressure advance) needs to be dialled in just right to prevent stringing. 5 times the tools, 5 times the headaches. Most of us operating toolchangers (E3d, Jubilee and other custom builds) have been hoping that PrusaSlicer will add some great new features to simplify things, but we aren't there yet...

    Wow this pile of crap is even a bigger disappointment than my crapbot flow was and even more expensive. Thank you for being honest. To be fair my caftbot is actually printing really well now but that is because i had to tinker and upgrade which is very hard to do on this machine. For the kinds of prices these companies are demanding you should expect a finished and refined product. Bambu lab is way ahead in that department.

    Excellent work with the follow up, but it really shouldn't be necessary. Prusa advertised the alpha firmware and software as "bringing updated firmware and PrusaSlicer to make the XL faster, more reliable and more efficient." If they didn't want people to use it yet, they should have chosen more cautious language for their blog post.

    • @capitalinventor4823
      @capitalinventor4823 6 місяців тому

      The fact that it's labelled as "alpha" signifies that it should be considered unsafe and may not work. There was a time that companies would never give customers alpha versions of products unless it would fix a very specific problem a client was having. Unfortunately it is common now to label beta versions as finished and move onto the next version, leaving maintenance developers to fix issues. The two main operating system companies were at the "forefront" of this, each for a different reason. (Quotes because it's something that a company should not aspire to be a leader at.)
      I would only install an alpha version of software if it fixed a very specific problem and nothing else was changed from the previous version. The alpha release from Prusa introduced a number of new features, such as input shaping. I would even be wary of installing beta software, especially early releases, unless it's a golden master (GM, a version that is intended to be released to the public but may not if a serious bug is found).

  • @andjmp
    @andjmp 6 місяців тому

    It does look like the alpha firmware was responsible for the wipe tower brim issue at least.

  • @Raven-Creations
    @Raven-Creations 3 місяці тому

    I've just commented on your earlier video how disappointed I was. It seems the release version of the software is no better, or only slightly. It may be the release version, but it's still alpha quality. Users should not be used as testers, especially not for a machine that's two and a half times the price of the Bambu X1, and nearly three times the price if wanting it pre-assembled. At that price, it should be producing top quality prints out of the box. Unless they fix this quickly, it could be a real blow to Prusa's reputation.
    Thank you for your thoroughness, even diving into the source code, and being prepared to give a bad review for a product from one of the kingpins of the community.

    Still think printing that tiny Nemo model with a 0.4 nozzle on the A1 and comparing it to with a 0.6 nozzle on the XL is silly. You will never achieve the same level of detail on a model that small with a significantly larger nozzle.
