Using his own video material together with an interview with Jazz.Ru Magazine, this is the story of how a musical director from Moscow has won the hearts of jazz/rock fans worldwide by painstakingly transcribing his favourite songs and creating a note-perfect tribute band to the American supergroup, Chicago.

"Just what can a Russian tribute band offer an American audience that the original band themselves can't offer?" Leonid (I presume) says he doesn't really know, it's a mystery. Then he answers the question perfectly. It is precisely because, unlike Chicago themselves, they stay true to the original studio recordings that those of us who listened to them hundreds of times in our youth are ecstatic to hear these renditions played live again. It is a resurrection of the same joy we felt as young people when we listened to the music. This makes it priceless to us.

It is absolutely thrilling to see L&F redo the recordings in their original form to such a high level. People love to hear exactly how the original recordings sounded, but live again which even Chicago themselves never did for us, and we have them imprinted in our memories from decades ago. Leonid’s group does these songs faithfully in their live performances as well. It is the best of both worlds, hearing the songs exactly as we remember them so well, yet from a live band of such high caliber. Leonid captured for himself what we all wanted, and has gathered his Friends to help him share it with us all. How could we not love them!

  • @PapaT74

Leonid's goal in replicating the exact sound of the studio versions of songs is exactly what the average pop music aficionado wants to hear. The meticulous care he took to come up with the exact reproduction of that studio sound is clearly evident. This is a gift to all of us from the 60s and 70s era who grew up with this music. And you'l find that same authenticity when you hear them live. Best cover band I've ever heard! Love these guys (and gal)!

Absolutely spot on. I get that bands get tired of playing the same thing over and over. It's the curse of having big hits. But, "Sorry", what you created, put on vinyl, and got the DJ's to play on their radio stations; was what we fell in love with. When you finally make it to our neck of the woods to play a live show and we forked out hard earned $$ to see you in person-we want to Watch you, play exactly what we fell in love with! Seems like a small price to pay for adoration and riches. That it took a Russian/Ukranian band to understand that is wonderful. I wonder if Leonid was living in Russia in the 70's and if he had as much access to Chicago's music as we did. For me, Chicago was the "house band" for high school. Every football game the band would play a Chicago song. I blew out several vacuum tubes on my dad's McIntosh system playing "Feeling Stronger Every Day" as loud as it would go. Dad's gone now and I have that system in a cabinet waiting to be restored. When it is- you can guess what song is going to test it. I'll watch the volume a little closer this time; besides; my ears don't need any more punishment after what I put them through in the 70's and 80's!

@@bweber6256 On UA-cam somewhere is an interview with Leonid. It’s amazing what he had to go through to access the music that we took for granted. Leonid and Friends are amazing! Chicago was a favorite of mine growing up in the '60s & '70s, in no small part because I played trumpet for 7 years. Leonid and Friends gave me goosebumps from the first time I heard them! At the height of the Cold War, I learned Russian, from Russian's, for the USAF and even then (1978) from the 1st day of class it was immediately apparent from our teachers that there are infinitely more similarities we share than differences promoted by propaganda from both sides. Their love of music was every bit as deep as ours, and Jazz, in particular, seemed to be a barrier breaker around the world. I love this band, their music, their vibe, and their message!

Having seen Chicago live during their _original_ tours back in the day it was not uncommon to notice that they weren't quite as tight as they were on the record. And even some of their original live recordings were not as tight as the studio ones. That was not uncommon back then with only a few exceptions, perhaps later with Tower of Power being one of them. But the remarkable part about Leonid & Friends is that their live performances are insanely tight and I have to say more consistently tight than even the original Chicago touring concerts. It's a real testament to the skill of the performers in L&F that they can consistently come that close even to the highly produced and rehearsed. Original studio recordings while playing live. That's a pretty high bar to hit over and over again

@@PracticalKnow From what I understand, Leonid reached out to musicians "countrywide" there. I'm sure with his role, knowledge, network, etc, he was able to appeal to the most talented available and interested in working on his project. As a long time player, writer, performer myself (electric bass, live), the drummer & guitarist are top notch and with bass being my "best" instrument, the drummer stacks up with ANY of the best I ever played with.
The bottom line for me? Just what a fabulous "media/medium" music is to reach into every human soul and draw us together unlike anything else man has ever devised.

It's a typical way for very talented musicians to learn covers and with the obvious talent with these people, it wasn't that difficult, assuming of course, that each focused on his/her own part(s) at least to some degree. I realize that Leonid was the driving force to a large extent but the guitar work, drumming, etc needed some serious input from the respective players. The drummer and guitarist especially have great chops.

It's hard to come across that these days, when every thing sounds so stifled, artificial and over-produced. And that's not easy with complex arrangements such as these. Not being a musician or heavy into the music scene, I think much of the appeal to Leonid and Friends, for me anyway, is the ability to see, via UA-cam videos, the different parts that I am not practiced at picking out, and then being more and more amazed at both the complexity and genius of the original music, and invigorated and drawn in to the enthusiasm of watching each performer doing their thing. Once a month or so I start playing the videos, and am transported for a couple of happy hours by great music, and the fruits of obvious talent and performance charisma. And no, no one is putting out music today requiring the talent and discipline required to sound this great.
