To understand this album better you gotta know Ari’s headspace. She was extremely depressed from the love of her life mac dying and realizing she would always feel that way about him and that was just trying to get over him by getting with Pete. She hints in multiple songs that Pete was with her for the fame. He got sooo famous the second they started dating. The reason ari broke up with mac wasn’t bc she didn’t love him anymore, it was bc she couldn’t handle his addiction anymore she said. Her friends said that while on tour ariana wouldn’t sleep ever bc she was up all night worrying that he would OD. This album was written in the aftermath of that and trying to find herself and save herself bc she didn’t think she was going to make it she later said.
And before mac passed she was trying to heal from the bombing at her concert in Manchester UK who killed 22 people. She had severe anxiety, depression and PTSD after that plus then mac died shortly after. And while performing the thank u next album on tour she cried through many songs bc of losing mac. There’s a lot of videos of her crying through songs and it’s so sad.
Imagine is about mac Miller and imagine he was still here with her ❤ she only sang it live one time in full and does the whistle notes so well on Jimmy Fallon. Such a great performance.

Put simple she had dropped an album just the previous year (was still charting and on the radio as per usual lol) but there was the manchester bombings 2 yrs prior, then Mac died like months after she got with Pete. So she was a mess but it feels like the music was her therapy.
