    Beautiful Rattlesnake Bryan! My guess would be 30 to 40 year old pit viper!
    One day you might consider a large, climate controlled greenhouse...300-600 square ft and enjoy watching your favorite Rattlesnakes in a semi natural environment. You will learn a lot of new and amazing things over the years, interacting with them. The differences in personalities alone is worth watching up close!!
    Thank you for protecting our earth buddies! The more people learn from you the less they will fear!

    Great show. I nearly stepped on a WDB while camping at Picacho Peak campground. It was the size of the one you caught, I was guessing it was near 40". M. H. (breeds bushmasters and such in Kingston NY area.) and I saw one a few miles from there, past a large cattle farm, up in the boulder field. It was pushing 60". If the both of us hadn't worked with them for decades, we would not have believed it. Maybe it was from OK on vacation.

    I so appreciate what you do in relocating the snakes and Gila monsters. I live in northeast Pennsylvania and we do not see as many snakes here. There is a small town north of us called Noxen and they have a rattlesnake round up every year. People can go to see the snakes and it is very enlightening/educational. They do release the snakes back where they were caught. I have learned a lot from your channel. Thank you for what you do!

    I live out on the edge of the Santa Rita Experimental Range and rattlesnakes are EVERYWHERE. I have a 24/7 drip style watering station that draws all kinds of wildlife into water. There is a direct correlation between ambient temperature, water, prey availability, and of course cover. I see what looks like pack rat droppings under the grill so this homeowner has multiple issues. I'd get rid of the packrats first and immediately adopt the habit of being hyper cautious in and around the back yard especially when turning things over or placing hands into blind spots. As careful as I am, i still have occasional close calls. The other night i saw a rattlesnake drinking out of a terrace cota watering dish with a Gila monster about two feet from it.
    Edit: The Mojave rattlers tend to be way more cryptic and very slow to rattle. Those are the ones that worry me the most.

    That was an amazing snake. As a child in the 1950s we moved to N Florida. The locals regularly hunted what they called Timber rattlers but were Eastern Diamondbacks. They would kill them and hang them from light posts, which upset me and my father very much. I remember how huge they were…to realize old the poor snakes were makes it even more distressing. Now, of course, they are in danger of extinction. The whole time we lived there no human was ever struck…only one cow, which died, and triggered a hunt that included sending all the kids home from school based on the myth that it would hunt us. I’ve refrained from using the language in my head.

  • @jessereichbach588
    @jessereichbach588 Рік тому +2

    Sure, it doesn't compare in length and especially girth and weight compared to the rattlers on the east coast, Timbers/Canebreak and EDBs can grow much bigger, not just longer, but much thicker, especially the hybrid of the two, "batwings". But for a western, that is huge. .
    The biggest Timber I think is like 6'2, something like 23lb. All though there have been reports of some at 7' and closer to 30lb. And the biggest EDB was 7'8", 34lb;
    "Batwings". hybrid Timber/EDB, usually can get around 5'5"'-7' and like 15-25 lb. But the max size of the hybrid is still unknown since it happens so rarely in nature and more recently have been bred more in captivity. And some are reported at like 8' and close to 40lb, likely due to hybrid vigor, which is when they get the top size, weight and strength genes from both sub-species. Not necessarily better in terms of survival or health, and definitely not age. But when in captivity the genes don't have to be tested against nature.

    Why do you not usually find snakes this big during relocations?

    • @RattlesnakeSolutions

      There are a few factors that come into play here, but for the most part it’s because the average size of an adult Western Diamondback is just smaller in the populations where most of our relocations occur.

One day driving on a road with dense brush on the left and fields on the right, I ran over a snake that was about half the width of the lane I was in so I estimate around 5 ft. The snake more then likely got hurt but I turned around to check it out and it was on its way back into the thick brush and didnt seem phased about being ran over.

    I hope you let it go. It's obviously been doing well without you. To keep this snake in captivity would be cruel.

      It has been, or rather was doing well when subdivisions weren’t taking the place of it’s home range. That’s not the case any more. The plan is for release when we can find a place where it can establish itself and not have to run into this problem again.
