This is a great video! Ninjago stopmotion as an artform is something I'm very passionate about so its a shame to see it in the position it's in currently.
Upon further thought I really think Brick Legacy Ninja's format of doing movies as opposed to seasons really might be the way forward. Alot of people here mentioned how people like YT vids to be complete narratives nowadays and I think pivoting to this format may help with that alot. Thank you for having me on!

Wow, Ethan! This video was awesome and so well put together. (Also Brick, thank you for including me in that little section!!! Means a lot) I would like to discuss where I think custom Ninjago Series are heading to right now.
Ok, I'd like to keep this short and simple (hopefully lol) so I don't take a lot of your time. First off, I think custom Ninjago stop motion series are heading into the right direction. I watch a bunch of smaller stop motion creators that have amazing Series. For me, I started in 2019... But I didn't have a UA-cam Channel until 2020. I got inspired by DT, AL, NJL, LegoManSam, MikeRM, Mitchell, Boaz, NCR, and many more! There was a time in the stop motion community (when the pandemic started) that was wholesome. The four-way collab between Spinjitzu Master Falcon, Agwens, Storm Studios, and CSSM was legendary. Other smaller channels rose in popularity and it was a great time overall. Over the years, Ninjago stop motion animators' stories have been growing with more lore behind it... And I'm all in for it. (I vividly remember binge-watching a bunch of Ninjago stop motion creators back in 2021 and it was legendary lol)
Right now, I know that there is a new generation of Ninjago stop motion animators rising up and I can't wait to see what they have in store!
P.S. MITCHELL COME BACK, YOU'RE ALIVEEEEEEEEEE
Oh, yeah... Shout-out to the stop motion animators who take time out of their day to put in astonishing work!!!

This was a really insightful video, and something that I had ben curious about for a while. I've noticed the little waves of the peaking and dipping since I started my own series, with my channel starting to grow around the time of the pandemic. But I've notice that even my small amount of viewership has dipped lower than normal (and maybe this is because I just take way too long to make videos). But it's interesting seeing that it isn't something that only my channel is experiencing, but the community as a whole. Hopefully the community can see the growth and engagement it once did, but who knows. If this form of content does die, I'll just be happy to have been around to not just experience it, but engage in it and put my stuff out there.

Ninjago as a whole is a concept that is constantly changing, whether it be design changes, animation change or something else, Ninjago has always been able to reinvent itself and the I think the stop motion community could do the same. While the numbers may not be as high as say 2017, there are still thousands of people who watch your series and smaller ones alike, and I think as long there is a fan base for this part of Ninjago, the art of a stop-motion series will never truly die

I am a lego animator, and I've been on youtube for around three years now. I joined when lego stop-motion was really popular and I have seen a massive decline in not just ninjago stopmotion content but lego animation as a whole.
I actually started my UA-cam journey with a ninjago series! back then I never knew anything about UA-cam and well, the start didnt go so good... then I just stopped making a ninjago series and headed towards random marvel, ninjago, dc test videos and all that kind of stuff. Then around March, last year, I started a new ninjago series (way better than my last one). more people were introduced to my channel. I enjoyed making a full season too!
but now, my season 2 has been going down hill. I just don't know what to do with it. the problem most people face is that they can't think of a fresh, new and exciting plot. the only reason I made S2 was because I needed something to tie into my season 3. I'm currently animating ep3 of S2 and i have been hit with so much inspiration and motivation from a bunch of 'small' creators these past 3 days... its time I finally start to believe in myself and get to work!!!
I won't ever lose hope in these stopmotion animators. sure, people are quitting... but its time for new people to rise. the time when all this will be popular again will come, and I think its coming sooner, rather than later!
if our childhood heroes, the ninja, wont quit, we won't either!!

After watching this video I definitely agree with some of the points made! A lot of people like to blame tik tok and short formed media for the downfall of longer form content such as a stop motion series but there are still plenty of people out there looking for long formed content to watch as seen by the views on many LEGO Stopmotion channels such as NCR Films

  • @NotNGJW

I really agree with this video, as the show is slowly dying so are the series on UA-cam there are some new people who have good series like OC11 studios, Flaming Studios, Turbo Ninja and uhh me (shameless plug) but even if we do make amazing series people don’t care as much because the popularity has died down and we aren’t in that large area of popularity so it’s hard to start a new series because people won’t have trust in someone newer and less popular than the people they already know

Personally, I believe a lot of it boils down to certain creators giving themselves higher standards. Many current brickfilmers struggle with getting stuff out if it doesn’t look absolutely perfect, and a lot of Ninjago stop motion series’ are typically of lower quality in order to get episodes out at a satisfying pace.
Just look at an animator such as Agwens, his Ninjago stop motion series is a technical feat, with gorgeous lighting and voice acting. Yet each episode takes about half a year to release, and I feel that many animators have started wanting their episodes to look absolutely PERFECT in order to rival such brickfilmers.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently. It sucks, but short form content is what kids (the primary audience for Ninjago) have adjusted towards. The time required to create a good high quality series is not favorable to the UA-cam algorithm and that’s really depressing. I wouldn’t be where I am in my life without the inspiration of many of the people in this video, and am disappointed that the inspirations haven’t been passed to the next generation.

I have been watching these creators since around 2013 and have been there since the "end". It really does feel strange to see an end of an era, for the more well-known creators of the era. My personal favorite creator was dt. Been sticking with his series since the beginning and to the end and was overall very well developed. I think that we are most definitely past the glory days and into a new era, but it really does not feel the same as it used to. The new forms of short media just are not the same, but it would be great to see fuller length Ninjago stop motion series again.

  • @agwens
    @agwens 3 місяці тому +6

Is Ninjago Stop Motion series dying? Yes and no, I would say there are multiple answers to this question depending on what you look at.
The arguments for it dying are as many of the people in this video said, short form content and Ninjago's slow decline in popularity. For Ninjago's popularity it was inevitable, nothing is popular forever and with how the Ninjago show is structured it is easier to just stop watching at any season, not everyone is interested in watching almost 20 seasons at this point of a similar structured season (I'm not saying the seasons are the same, just that they have a similar pattern). The decline in the show's popularity is a big impact on the fan content of the show since if less people are interested in the main show less people will want to watch fan made content.
As for short content, you could say it has impacted every type of media, this is something we can't do much about but adapt and also create short form content or continue producing videos for the audience that enjoys this type of videos.
The reason we don't see many people doing a systematical series is cause the process of how they do their videos has changed compared to a few years ago. Around 5-6 years ago the simple style of stop motion has dominated the Ninjago community (with some people still sticking to that style), many people were inspired by those creators during that time and started their own series and after a while they found their style which in turn inspired a new generation of Ninjago animators. Right now I would say we are that a point where people want to do more than simply animate a simple story with simple fight scenes, they want to stand out, they have higher production values, their passion for this inspired them to keep on getting better which made them improve upon their editing/animating/lighting/storytelling/voice acting which causes the video to take longer since the more you want your stuff to be better the more time you have to put into it. We're not seeing a consistent flow of fan made episodes is because people are taking their time, they don't care about following the trends of the Ninjago release, they care about expressing themselves, they want to create something they love with their own uniqueness.
I think that right now there is a lot of people who are creating something with higher production values than compared to a few years ago and with stories completely unique that some can barely be called Ninjago, sadly this doesn't garner as much attention as a simple, consistent format of episodes but I think that we are in an age where people care more about having fun, creating what they love than likes and views (not saying that they aren't important).
So I think that from now on we will see even better stop motion series that will be popular in a smaller community that won't reach a wider range of audience bringing tens or hundreds of views.

Great insights. Aside from valid points about short format, what stood out to me was long format, vs a continuing series. Today folks binge entire seasons in a weekend, or kids watch all of DR S2, in a day. I think the self contained - one and done is the only counter to short format. But you have to hook people in those first 60 seconds to keep them engaged these days. How many Netflix series have I started and bailed on the first 10 minutes. A lot!

While it is possible that the Ninjago stop motion series could be on the decline, I’m sure that the possibility for them to rise in popularity is something that can happen.
I have been thinking of making my own Ninjago stop motion series, and it would be base off a video where it was a scene recreation from a TMNT movie, but with Lloyd and Kai in their place. The video ended with a possible story to be made from it. Though, since my channel isn’t solely focused on Ninjago, it would take a while.

As an animator, I've got goals. Big goals.
First off, I would like to admit that yes, unfortunately, Ninjago Stop Motion Series aren't as popular and interesting as they were before 5-8 years ago. Which is why I want to make big changes. As some of my audience may know, I'm planning on making a series myself. Now, looking at how the track record has been going for Stop Motion Series, we as a community can already tell that it's pretty slow, with UA-camrs quitting (not that it's their fault of course), lack of attention, etc. My dream of making a Ninjago based Stop Motion Series like BrickFilmer125, SPI, LegoManSam, EthanStudios (yourself) or even making hour long movies like for example, Brick Legacy Ninja, or eventually making skits like Khan Nguyen, is to inspire more people to creating Ninjago Series of their own! I know that's what most people might say, but it's true. Especially since that's also my biggest dream since I want to become a Film Director/Actor as my main career! know that's what most people might say, but it's true.
Also, we just gotta give credit to the people who still take their time into still entertaining us with their videos, despite some of them not having series of their own like Ackul Bricks, AL123, GS Lego Motions, Flaming Studios, Spinjitzu Master Falcon, NinjaKai and Mitchell!

I think that Ninjago is, sadly, a bit dying. We lost so many awesome stopmotioners for the course of the past few years... And the interestes changed over years. I believe, that the ones who are left and will come need to evolve their work. Maybe upload solid films, or make their series as the whole first and then upload during some periodes of time. What I know for sure is that stopmotioners need to interest people in their stories and upload more often. I hope you all will some day receive what you deserve!

If you have a good storyline and know how to integrate your sets to it, you don't need many sets or figures to start your series. (Okay, you need he Ninja ad some others, but I think you got them)

Well, I'd have to agree Ninjago stop motion series are heading toward a downward slope, but I wouldn't say they've reached a spot of *complete* irrelevance, especially with you, SPI and BLN still making stories (albeit reaching the end of them), and me trying to formulate my own! It was really nice to see how many people liked the story I put out there last year, but now they're begging me for a sequel and I'm not sure where to go with my story, but at some point or other I think I actually do want to.
I have to agree with MikeRM that it might be because we're all getting older and have more responsibilities in our lives, but I hope that the Ninjago stop motion series thing altogether doesn't die permanently, and that creators and eager storytellers (like myself) all over the world will find time in their lives to do what they love, however they want to do it! Our adult lives may be important, but our lives as creators and spending time with the child-like light inside of us that loves stories are just as, if not more, important in my eyes!
    Wow. Lots of words ehehee...

I’ll say this is the only issue is dragons rising is trying the best it can. But, Crystalized severely damaged Ninjago’s reception. A lot of people have chose to end their series after crystalized. And you almost never see any dragons rising related season, series or a movie. Heck when I mention to some people about dragons risking they’ll go. “Wait, ninjago is still going?” Or, “I didn’t even finished crystalized.” Severely do I think that as much dragons rising try and it is attracting an audience, there’s just not enough will or motivation to want to try anymore. Honestly I will say I admire and envy many of my fellow animators who aren’t choosing to follow the series anymore, and instead trying to create something new with their custom series and characters. I feel like stop motion Can and will continue to try to change and evolve moving forward. It’s just people need to try to break the consistency of following others or the show, and receive a confidence booster to carry and create their own storylines. So long as they keep the status quo of the characters they all know and love. As of such the trend is not declining but going through a slow evolution of something new. Others just need to look explore and give others a chance. Thank you for making the video I do find it interesting how some of the biggest names view the world of stop motion now, but I agree with Legacy’s statement on a few others that nothing has died. There’s opportunities for something new, all we to do as a community if we truly do care is give the young and upcoming animators a chance to become e great inspirations for many years to come.

I would love to say that the ninjago brick film franchise isn’t doomed but I would be lying if I said that stop motions take time to make and as we get older we get more busy and start looking for something better and it’s sad but I hope that a next generation can rise up and make there own fun stories with Ninjago.

I've always loved watching these channels and many others, but it's not the same anymore, it seems so far away from us now. Not only the stop-motion community, but the Ninjago community were stronger before and it feels very sad that there are no more channels that make big series, now it's just small animations, and the new series Dragons Rising is less interesting than the previous seasons.

I actually just started a Ninjago series. (Ninjago: Ninja Stories) To be honest I don’t think Ninjago series are going completely down but wouldn’t lie to you and say it hasn’t lost a bit of relevance, it has. Not just Ninjago but LEGO as a whole isn’t as popular with kids anymore as it use to, not saying kids don’t play with LEGO but it’s not as popular with a few as most kids are more into other things are. Another thing is the current Landscape of UA-cam where unless you can make a video every week, you won’t make it as a career so that kind of kills most opportunities for Animators, and Stop motion is one can not rush or it will look like shit. So I won’t say Ninjago Series are dead but just kinda in limbo which sucks because I like a lot of people here grew up with Ninjago and probably grew up watching or even making these series but that’s my two cents on the matter.
