@@zoomzike I can actually legitimately back up your idea here: maybe we're dealing with an unreliable narrator. I mean, think about it: if Bowser had really brought the Big Bob-omb to life with a Power Star like you said, I doubt that any of the Bob-omb Buddies would have known. Also, "ever since the Big Bob-omb got his paws on the Power Star" sounds like something an uninformed soldier would say. It's war talk. Bob-omb Battlefield actually carried with it one of the biggest mysteries from my childhood. I grew up with the DS version of SM64 as my second game ever, and as I climbed up the mountain for the first time, the climb was very smooth. But as I entered the level for the second time and climbed the mountain again, I noticed something very odd: suddenly there were holes in the path! Like, you know, the little pits with the cannon next to them. I didn't remember them being there the first time, so I thought that must have been a case of the level changing when I got to the second star. But as you should know, that path never changes. The path up the mountain is always the same and always has those holes. For a while I thought it was just a thing that was only different on your first run through the level (much like the Bowser submarine I guess), but then on another save file the holes were still there... so I just thought it was the first ever run on the cartridge, until I realized that made no sense either. For a really long time it was in my head as an unexplainable vivid memory, a Mandela effect... until surprisingly recently I remembered that on my very first run up the mountain I got curious about the little nook in the wall and went into it, so it teleported me. So in other words, the reason I never saw the chasms in the path on my first run... was because I unknowingly avoided them. Possibly my weirdest video game memory.
I grew up with the N64 version and very nearly had the same thing happen, but I happened to look at one of the holes and wonder what the purpose was when I saw a cannonball come out of it. I thought that was all they did and that it was just an explanation for where they come from, maybe even trying to one-up the NES The Legend of Zelda for its rocks that inexplicably fall from Death Mountain until you're at the top and then they just disappear. It wasn't until the next level when I raced Koopa the Quick that I accidentally discovered their purpose. I hadn't remembered the map well enough yet, was not even close to mastering the controls, and I tried to climb the slope that he ran up with ease, so he was already well on top of the mountain as I was scaling it. I decided to continue anyway, to get some practice in since it seemed like it was going to be a tough climb, and I noticed one of the two holes. Thinking it would be funny to go all the way up the mountain just to run inside and get hit be a cannonball, I stepped inside ... and teleported to the bottom of the mountain! Had I not remembered the hole from very recently and been goofing around, I definitely would have dismissed those holes and forgot about them for a long while. And yes, I did piece it together and use the warp to beat Koopa the Quick. I felt a little dirty about it, but also wasn't sure that it was possible to beat him legit at that point, so I was okay with it. To be fair, I would have tried the cannons first, but didn't trust my aim with them yet!
11:25 I think there's another implication as well that everyone misses. The other two cannonballs may well have been two previous kings that were deposed, with one of them likely deposed by King Bob Omb.
12:29 Damn, I really love your theory on that! Also, if Big Bob-Omb was originally a cannon ball (thus not a regular bob-omb) that also could explain why he doesn't have a fuse like actual bob-ombs!

Indeed, it's such a brilliant way to start the game. This area feels like home after 5 minutes of play, how about that?! Its main path is straight forward but it's not all there is of course, and thanks to the moderate size and clear objectives (how can you resist to climbing the mountain or interacting with the chain chomp which is in the middle of the main path you're already following) exploration is quite comfortable. It's also really easy to get anywhere in no time, which is not achieved in every Mario 64 stage. This in not my favourite 64 stage (that goes to whomp's fortress) but it's definetly close and for the first level of the first collectathon it couldn't have been much better than this. Congrats 👌
Something possibly of note you didn't mention: In case King Bob-omb's hint wasn't enough, and you're completely stumped on how to defeat him, there's another clue. King Bob-omb is a giant Bob-omb. How do you defeat the regular Bob-ombs? Picking them up and throwing them.
I think as a kid what appealed to me the most about Mario64 is how many different things mario can do compared to the 2d versions. Sure he has new moves in every new game but this was probably the biggest leap forward. In addition to Running, Jumping, Swimming, Long jumping, ground pounds, and backflips. Mario can punch, kick, pick things/enemies up, put them down or throw them. Climb poles and trees, handstand on the top, kick off walls, sneak up on sleeping piranha plants, crawl, dive, and even lose his hat.
Fun fact; No matter if you're not familiar with English or videogames, it's almost certain that your first star will always be defeating King Bob Omb, I know this because back then not a lot of my family knew English or videogames but they always got the first star as intended. I think this is because humans tend to always look for the highest mountain and is no coincidence why they placed a mountain in the first level with the first star. Well... that and... that there's not a lot of options in the beginning, my point still holds since you're actively trying to scale the mountain first playthrought
Now imagine being like 10, after years of 2d gaming, playing something like Mario 64? Growing up in that era was so cool in that each new console was drastically different. Playing Mario 64 for the first time in a Toys R Us was amazing... until Mario turned it off and said "Thank you for playing Nintendo 64, who's next?" and I would be like "me, I am next forever" lol
I was looking for a video exactly like this some months ago. I'm so glad one finally exists. Bob-omb Battlefield is one of the most important Mario levels ever made, and I'm glad to see it be done justice. Thanks so much!

As someone who speedruns Mario 64, while I would say that BoB is not my favorite stage to do, I still think it is the best designed level in the entire game. Not to say that the game gets worse from there, but BoB's design is just absolutely phenomenal. This stage is a perfect of ''Show, don't tell'' and considering that it's one of the first 3D games of its kind is quite impressive. Definitely worth the ''revolutionary'' reputation that the game gets. Despite Mario 64 having aged a bit over the years, BoB is still fun to play to this day.
The most amazing part about making a first-of-its-kind game is that you have to be the first person to design an understandable explanation of its world. This is the reason we will likely never find a first level in a game that is more satisfying than Bob-omb Battlefield- because designing a game with massive game-changing mechanics such as adding an entire dimension of movement will likely only occur a handful of times more in the future.
Never played Super Mario 64, but I totally agree. I've seen so many videos about the game, I'm kind of jealous that I'll never have the same first experience or nostalgia
Yeah, but Bianco Hills, Good Egg Galaxy, Fossil Falls, these opening levels would only get better and better......, still think it’s a great first level though.
The difference is that Super Mario 64 had to completely start from scratch and INVENT 3D space platforming, so it's much more impactful than any 3D Mario game that came after it
@@Nic_2751 Probably, yeah. I'd say Bianco Hills is the best, out of the selection imo, then BBB, Good Egg and Fossil Falls. None of 'em are bad and are of similar quality.
I love your type of videos! I can only imagine the amount of thought and effort you put into making these videos as good as they are for a rather small amount of people.
This level will always a special place in the gaming section of my heart since Super Mario 64 was the first game I ever played. I knew it was basically an easy tutorial level, but I never really looked at it with this much depth.
So fun fact that I'm not sure you mentioned. There's a second teleport shortcut where the cannon balls come out. If you step inside teleports you between the two. Nevermind. You just mentioned it lol. Cool video nonetheless
Man, I really never gave as much attention to the details of this map as it deserves. I really like Bob-omb Battlefield, it's been a part of my life ever since I used to play it in its 2d version in the flash game Super Mario 63 and, just a step and a hop away, after my first play of SM64, it's always felt like a quintessential Mario level, beyond even levels like 1-1 (from Super Mario Bros) and Yoshi's Island 2 (from Super Mario World), which are just classics. This level just brings such a degree of practicity, fun, replayability and simple charm and I can't help but love it. It baffles me how the first 3d level ever in gaming can be so iconic. Nintendo, thank you for Bob-omb Battlefield.
Did not think I would enjoy 20 minutes of gushing about Bob-omb Battlefield, but then again I also didn't think I'd enjoy all the Identifying Luck Mario Party videos and yet here I am, having watched all five and continuing to watch them during the lead-up to Superstar. I guess you're hitting a niche I didn't know I had.
I’d love to see Goldeneye if that’s your thing! Been replaying it, and having this series on the brain looked for some video analysis on it and mostly came up short. There’s a really cool intentionality to it’s design that was way ahead of its time, and lots to pick apart! Great series!
It’s so good they remade it into the best level in Galaxy 2 Throwback Galaxy. Edit: Yeah obviously it’s not it’s Whomp’s Fortress, but I wanted to make it feel better, even if it obviously doesn’t have feelings.....
3:40 messing with the camera controls also shows you the valley path early, which foreshadows the cage where you can find a red coin and a one up. im surprised you didnt mention that changing the camera immediately shows you an accessible area of interest
@5:05 Actually Bob-Ombs can also be defeated by kicking them. However, normal players likely won't figure this out until they've played the game for several hours.
I can't believe I never pieced the extra cannonball and koopa together! I noticed that they were added, but thought it was just to show you that the levels can change when you go in them to get harder or more interesting. That's such a great dash of flavor, and makes me wonder what other additions like that I never noticed! Also, it's clever that they put the sign about camera controls next to the wing cap block since that's exactly how you enable the level for that cap! I always thought the placement for it was odd, but noticed the coins and thought that was all since it's quite a while until you can unlock the wing cap from the first time you encounter it, but now I see it was some very nice priming! Just odd enough that you question it, but just explainable enough that you dismiss it, but the two remain connected somewhere in your mind!
Watching videos like these always makes me smile. It's like how I played my favourite game (Sonic 3K) for the first time in year a couple days ago and lost my damn mind over how cool the water effect in Launch Base looks. Seriously, check it out! The fact that these games that are well over 20 years old keep impressing people goes to show how timeless they are.
it's also interesting how the second field being broken into two levels means the player has to learn how to jump to proceed. in early beta screenshots, paintings were originally at ground level, so theoretically that might have been the very first required jump in development.
@ZoomZike 3:01 I think the word you were looking for is 'intangible', not invincible. You can't interact with the block at all yet, you just move through it as if it wasn't even there. If the block was invincible, it would just be a solid standard block that can't be opened or destroyed.
SM64 is one of those games I simultaneously love and hate. I love the designs and the theming of the stages, and while I was a lot better at the game as a kid, it's just really hard to play these days. A slight combination of the lack of motivation when it comes to slogging through the first few levels every time I start it to get to my favorites, and the archaic, sensetive af controls that constantly screwed me over even back then. If this level analysis becomes a full series, I am super excited for that prospect! Wet Dry World's always been my favorite, and Tiny Huge Island, while my least favorite [100 coin ptsd intensifies] is probably one of the best levels. in the game
Even with it’s garbage camera, this game impressed me with how well it ages to this day. I wouldn’t say it’s exactly a masterpiece, but this is 1996, at the time, this would’ve been mind-blowing!
As somebody whose first console was a Sega Genesis, I can confirm that Super Mario 64 was a big fucking deal. Even my tiny 5 year old brain knew that what I was experiencing was completely revolutionary.
This video makes me a little sad. I can never feel this way about Super Mario 64 again. I can look at these things intellectually and appreciate the craftsmanship, and I still enjoy playing the game regularly, but I just can't *feel* it the way I did back then. You only get introduced to 3D gaming for the first time once. And honestly, I wonder if the feeling of it is anywhere near as mind-blowing for kids these days, now that 3D games are the norm. Surely it's still a great experience and fun to play, but I can't imagine it's the same as playing it for the first time in 1996. The context is just so different. Thanks for helping me remember how it felt. This analysis puts into words the spirit of encountering SM64 for the first time, and of the N64 era in general.
Could you consider making some video on Super Mario 64 DS sometime? I really like your in-depth videos about aspects of Mario games, and I'm curious for your thoughts on this remake. :)
Man, I really enjoy these level analysis videos you've been putting out recently. They're really informative and make me look at the level in a different way. 22:20 Well, I mean, it also is the greatest game of all time lol
That can't be the c- ah, just kidding. Bob-Omb Battlefield is genius level design and a good showcase for why I love Collectathons. Also small detail not mentioned: there is a clue on how to get Chain Chomp's star and that's through the other pegs in the level. The player is safe to pound them without danger, feeding their curiosity to maybe try it on the Chain Chomp's own peg to see what'll happen. The Red Coin on it basically confirms to the player that their action will have a reward.
Ok i have 2 things to say 1: I think the coolest part of 100 coin stars are the fact that the bob-omb battlefield 100 coin star is universaly agreed to be the hardest coin star which makes the first level being one of the easiest have one of the hardest stars without changing the layout which is awsome! 2: this game despite being very old STILL has many things i never knew. ive been playing this game so much (mabye atleast 100 hours (yeah actualy) ) yet i have never even knew or considered water bombs defusing the bob-omb which just makes me love it so much. in my opinion Super Mario 64 IS THE BEST GAME NINTENDO HAS EVER MADE. it may still have flaws but considering the time it was made... i consider this game a masterpiece i used to be a part of a podcast (Teens Talk Video Games) that sadly my family just dosent have the tim for anymore which makes me regret never talking about this game on the podcast... plus ngl after typing this im literaly gonna do like, my 11th playthrough! Also nintendo... put Super Mario 3D Allstars back on sale. i may have it now but i want more people to expirience this game i just love it that much! also thank you anyone who took time outta their lives just read this THANK YOU and WAHOO!!!
1996 as a whole was the year 3D platformers had truly arrived. Aside from Super Mario 64, we also got Tomb Raider, which was awesome, Bubsy 3D, which was okay, and Crash Bandicoot, which was just Donkey Kong Country with a bad camera.

Add this to the same bucket as the Radical Highway video in the "This level has great design but it's overshadowed by something else" bucket
I was looking for a video exactly like this some months ago. I'm so glad one finally exists. Bob-omb Battlefield is one of the most important Mario levels ever made, and I'm glad to see it be done justice. Thanks so much!
You get a sub for your smooth, sexy baritone and excellent delivery within seconds. We will see if your clever analysis of whatever you choose to point your eye toward next can maintain it...
Edit: just realized that you have been popping up in my feed lately approppo of nothing. This is the fifth video of yours presented to me but the first that I finally clicked on. Google was determined to make me see you. Grats. It seems you are being pushed.
I love the sheer enthusiasm and energy you have with every video subject you think up. You manage to make any topic more interesting!
A group of precisely three Goombas in a triangle is called a "spawner" :)
Race wars exist even in Mario games.
I really hope this video blows up in views.
Mario 64 might have aged with time, but Bob-Omb Battlefield has not aged in the slightest. A classic level from a classic game.
This is likely the most nostalgic world in any video game for me. Thank you for giving its due time in the sun!
Never played Super Mario 64, but I totally agree. I've seen so many videos about the game, I'm kind of jealous that I'll never have the same first experience or nostalgia
God, I wish I can play this game for the first time again
You can also kick bob-ombs. The timing is tricky, but I've managed to do it a few times
Yeah, but Bianco Hills, Good Egg Galaxy, Fossil Falls, these opening levels would only get better and better......, still think it’s a great first level though.
The difference is that Super Mario 64 had to completely start from scratch and INVENT 3D space platforming, so it's much more impactful than any 3D Mario game that came after it
Ehh idk if they're particularly better than BBB.
@@blackdot105 are you really gonna tell me Good Egg Galaxy and Fossil Falls are inferior to Bob-Omb Battlefield?
@@Nic_2751 Yes, at best, your examples are "as good" , for sure not "better" though. Also, Bianca Hills is actually a pretty mediocre starting level.
My cat died today thanks for giving something to keep my mind of the grief.
Wish you the best
This level will always a special place in the gaming section of my heart since Super Mario 64 was the first game I ever played. I knew it was basically an easy tutorial level, but I never really looked at it with this much depth.
I love these videos
Seeing the stages we grew up loving as a critic and as a gamer
Clever
23 lives 0 coins 1 Star
23:01 the video length
So fun fact that I'm not sure you mentioned. There's a second teleport shortcut where the cannon balls come out. If you step inside teleports you between the two.
Nevermind. You just mentioned it lol. Cool video nonetheless
My first time fighting King bob-omb my smash bros instincts kicked in and I immediately threw him of the battlefield.
Where is identifying luck mario party 6? I can’t wait for you to cover my favorite mario party!
I do think this is one instance where a victory sign makes a lot more sense than a peace sign
Y'know, I originally just started watching you for the Mario Party videos. But your content in general is quite entertaining and well-written!
I’d love to see Goldeneye if that’s your thing! Been replaying it, and having this series on the brain looked for some video analysis on it and mostly came up short. There’s a really cool intentionality to it’s design that was way ahead of its time, and lots to pick apart!
Great series!
Haven't played it myself yet, but I plan to!
You can aim at the tree from the bottom cannon by aiming just above it. That's how I got up there when I was a kid
6:48 for a second I though you were going to mention the bob-omb clip
It’s so good they remade it into the best level in Galaxy 2 Throwback Galaxy.
Edit: Yeah obviously it’s not it’s Whomp’s Fortress, but I wanted to make it feel better, even if it obviously doesn’t have feelings.....
Based
This needs more attention! Great work zike!
"A group of goombas is called a massacre" lol
i love these level essays, these are literally so cool
3:40 messing with the camera controls also shows you the valley path early, which foreshadows the cage where you can find a red coin and a one up. im surprised you didnt mention that changing the camera immediately shows you an accessible area of interest
@5:05 Actually Bob-Ombs can also be defeated by kicking them. However, normal players likely won't figure this out until they've played the game for several hours.
I can’t fathom, even beginning to create a video analyzing a level like Bob-Omb Battlefield.
13:22 That black bob-omb getting taken out by the cannon ball is one of the most unintentionally funny things I have ever seen.
If I knew that could happen then I could've made a great joke out of it, AHHHH!
Watching videos like these always makes me smile. It's like how I played my favourite game (Sonic 3K) for the first time in year a couple days ago and lost my damn mind over how cool the water effect in Launch Base looks. Seriously, check it out! The fact that these games that are well over 20 years old keep impressing people goes to show how timeless they are.
all of super mario 64 is really beautiful and awe inspiring, currently hoping to use quite a few levels as inspiration for art...
it's also interesting how the second field being broken into two levels means the player has to learn how to jump to proceed. in early beta screenshots, paintings were originally at ground level, so theoretically that might have been the very first required jump in development.
@ZoomZike 3:01 I think the word you were looking for is 'intangible', not invincible. You can't interact with the block at all yet, you just move through it as if it wasn't even there. If the block was invincible, it would just be a solid standard block that can't be opened or destroyed.
A group of three goombas can be called a massacre, just like a group of three scuttlebugs can be considered a jamboree
Still love it when ZoomZike analyzes and gushes about stuff!
I love these level videos
"Mario Wings to the Sky" may as well have been called "Mario Goes Super Saiyan 4" because we were all like HOW SHOW ME.
Could you consider making some video on Super Mario 64 DS sometime? I really like your in-depth videos about aspects of Mario games, and I'm curious for your thoughts on this remake. :)
12:00 well the canon balls do have a name, Which is "Big Steelies" so maybe they're already alive in the "dud" form
"Everyone knows how a good news reporter works."
News: Camera is facing the front of the person so you couldn't see where you're running.
Ok i have 2 things to say
1: I think the coolest part of 100 coin stars are the fact that the bob-omb battlefield 100 coin star is universaly agreed to be the hardest coin star which makes the first level being one of the easiest have one of the hardest stars without changing the layout which is awsome!
2: this game despite being very old STILL has many things i never knew. ive been playing this game so much (mabye atleast 100 hours (yeah actualy) ) yet i have never even knew or considered water bombs defusing the bob-omb which just makes me love it so much.
in my opinion Super Mario 64 IS THE BEST GAME NINTENDO HAS EVER MADE. it may still have flaws but considering the time it was made... i consider this game a masterpiece
i used to be a part of a podcast (Teens Talk Video Games) that sadly my family just dosent have the tim for anymore which makes me regret never talking about this game on the podcast... plus ngl after typing this im literaly gonna do like, my 11th playthrough!
Also nintendo... put Super Mario 3D Allstars back on sale. i may have it now but i want more people to expirience this game i just love it that much!
also thank you anyone who took time outta their lives just read this THANK YOU and WAHOO!!!
I love the idea of calling a group of goombas a massacre!
1996 as a whole was the year 3D platformers had truly arrived. Aside from Super Mario 64, we also got Tomb Raider, which was awesome, Bubsy 3D, which was okay, and Crash Bandicoot, which was just Donkey Kong Country with a bad camera.
All the cannonballs are dethroned defeated kings. That's what I think
Real title: Identifying Luck - Mario 64: Bob-Omb Battlefield
20:33 I'll take that as a foreshadowing for a future video
Love the content fam, keep it up!
Nintendo made an explosive entrance to the 3d scene
The day wasn't a blast, but this video gave it a funny fuse tho.
Thank you Mr. Zoomzike for being such an awesome entertainer and educator :D
0:25 You meet Lakitu if you aren't schmoovin'.
ayyy new upload love your vids man
6:48 i thought that during this section the bob-omb clip would get mentioned, more as a jokey thing
Mario and Luigi are doing what they can.
Yoshi and the Princess, are giving them a hand.
Bob-Omb Battlefield.
20:23 didn't knew you could make that jump, guess you do learn something new everyday
17:50 what I do there is to aim at the red coin on top of tree, it seems that you may hit the land but with the right angle you can easily grab the tyou can grab of the top of tree,
7:35 Little detail but I would have preferred if their called a murder because that’s also what a group of crows are called
