I couldn't draw one of these figures, let alone 3 of them that are near identical. i'm convinced this guy is a wizard of some sort.
LevitatorMusic XD he is a magical wizard lol
LevitatorMusic just practice makes perfect he was probably practicing for YYEEEAARRRSSS.
he kind of look serious... no fails maybe 0_0
LevitatorMusic No, it's because he practiced. You can't just expect to be good at something over night. Drawing like that takes YEARS of practice but just keep doing it and you will be able to do sooner or later.
I thought that too at first, but after practicing for several months I can see that it’s definitely possible. (Keep in mind I’m nowhere near this guy’s level.)
The are good shading techniques, could you (if you don't already have one) do a video on 'where' to shade? That's always been my biggest issue. (other than hands and proportions -.-)
Denn Green III This will tell you where to add shadows:ua-cam.com/video/-dslyiHqeL0/v-deo.html
Yes this is exactly what i was looking for, thank you!
Add it where the shadow is placed, wether it visible or not
+markcrilley i like too youse mechanical pencils and a black dark pencil
+markcrilley this help me too thank u!!
Hi mark! I just wanted to say thank you. When I was younger I got a copy of your "mastering manga" book for Christmas. Ever since then I used your book to try and progress and get better. I just won an art scholarship at my school for my art. I would just like to say thank you for getting me started. When I am older, I hope to become a manga artist just like you, maybe even one day I'll get too write my own art instruction book and inspire some other little girl to begin drawing. I hope one day I'll meet you not as a random commenter on your videos but as a fellow manga artist. Until then I would just like to say thank you.
What I learned in this video: it is VERY professional to knock over a tripod.
"This looks pretty easy. Simple and efficient." Goes to shade it in, "What is happening?"
I like the third one better because it just seams fuller
Me too
Hey guys! I'm a 14 yr old drawer and all of the videos of mark crilley helped me perfect all the shadings by now and all sorts of things in drawing.
I have to say, you're an inspiration mark crilley!
Dear Mark,
I just want to say Thank You for posting your tips and artwork for everyone to see. I found you on You tube when I was 15 and I am now 17 and have won many drawing contests thanks to your tips and helpful hints. Thank you so much for sharing all that you know
To those who says they can't do it, well here's my message:
STOP BEING A CRY BABY AND PRACTICE!
Practice makes perfect! C:
+IDEK IDEK no practice makes permanent
Xeadria yeah!
Practice makes better
Practice makes permanent ,because if you practice something wrong then you will have a very hard time trying to break that habit.
You are EPIC. You're the reason I have a book published. Thanks. I'm writing a new book now, too. It's called the Hero Chronicles ® and you're vids are helping it along, man. Thanks.
I liked the way you have narrated the ways. Also about using what you can find while sketching :) it’s honest and it turns out each shading has its own charm.
Thank you so much for the knowledge and techniques you shared with us. I've been a fan of yours for quite some time now. I was so shocked to see your drawing book at Barnes and Noble. I was like, "WHAT?! Mark Crilley did this?!".
It blows my mind how u are able to do stuff like this without professional tools...i mean pros who make big animes like Naruto make art like this and need the help of professional tools while ur here and making the same art with just a #2 pencil
me too
So that you don't have to buy professional tools to draw and be able to draw without them that's why.
Thumbs Up if you are a righty and reply if you are a lefty!
Lefty!
rip
Lefty!
gg
Lefty?
1. Easy 2. Neat and Dark 3. Light, simple and blended.
That was my observation, they all look the same but different if you know what I mean. Most helpful video on shading I've seen. Thank you!
Omg you really helped me improve my drawing skills! I hope you keep doing what you do, because you're great at drawing and teaching! You're official my drawing senpai now
Thank you Mark Crilley. I brought one of your books and they help me alot. When I first started I didn't do well with drawing my characters, but now I could draw easier, but I still have trouble with porportions size of the body. I still have trouble with 1/3 view through.
Thank you Aurelio!
Please do a coloring tutorial with coloring pencils!
I don't draw manga in the way it's described, but your videos have helped me a lot!! I really appreciate your videos and I hope you'll continue making them!!!
I would like to thank you Mark Crilley for makeing all of these videos, they have helped me alot.
especialy this one i can never figure out how to shade in things so this will be very helpful.
I got two major problems I can't shade all that well and I don't know what parts of my drawing to shade?
Same I was never good at shading because i never knew where to shade
Same problem dude 😭
Found out where you want the light to be coming from, then shade the opposite side of it.
pagal teacher bolti hai to shadind karo
I usually use the first one only for quick sketches. For a more polished picture, I use the third technique or use crosshatching.
Thank you for this video though, it's very useful for providing different examples of shading.
Thanks!
Love it! The idea of using the first technique for flashbacks is just great! ❤
loved this video it helped a lot been using the same cross hatching technique for years and it seems like these are easy and would be fun to try them out. thanks so much for the videos.
How do you know where to shade? How do you know where to put clothing wrinkles? I need to learn these. And how do you do detailed hair? That too.
HajimeSaito i feel your pain, I've been searching does question and I've never found an answer 😪 its sucks.
HajimeSaito He has a video explaining how to draw wrinkles
The 3rd one is my favorite, and the reason is it makes the character look a little more 3D, but the other 2 are also good for quick sketches. I also think they first 2 are also great cuz sometimes for certain drawings 2D can be the best option.
Thank you Mark you inspire me so much for a person who is not the best drawer.
P.s. I'm 12
Brianna Baker Thanks Brianna!
yeah the 3rd one is also my favorite i use it a lot of times, especially when drawing some of my favorite anime characters....
My name is also Brianna Baker! ^.^
Omg I love these videos so much. I'm learning so much from you. I'm just a beginner so my favorites are the Chibis. Thank so much for doing these.
mark crilley... you are an master at art, i bow down to your wicked skills.
Oh my noodles, thank you
oh my noodles
+Martzia Riker Noodles?
NNNOOOOODDDDLLLLEEEEESSS!!! :D
Yesssssss NOOOOOOOOOOOOOODLES
Press S to change the font of the subtitles
You're welcome
it doesn't work for me :(
there are no subtitles
mellisa stamp There's a little button down called " CC " at the bottom right of the video itself, next to the 'settings,' 'wide screen,' 'full screen' options, that's how you enable subtitles. You're welcome
Adelaide Somero what if I'm using a phone :3
for android?
You made me a better artist by showing me the last one...thanks so much, holding the pencil like that was much better than i did before
I was making manga in Adobe Illustrator and soon realized that one should know how to make them with hands..
This video really helped. Thanks!
Hey Mr. Crilley, can you make a video on the manga torso of a male and female character, from head to toe?
My art teacher showed us this in class
I had difficulty making the shadows! and now I can do ... the video was very good helped me a lot! I love your videos :D
I've just been using the first method and blending sticks all this time XD
Thank you for the video, its really helpful!
Me:This looks easy *trys to Shade* HOW THE F**K IM Going to this.
***** keep drawing, and some how you will find a way to improve it yourself
mate, you don't shade like this xD cause it's shabby if you ask me. But yeah it may be good enough for anime.... if you draw like me ( the picture i have ) then then shading like that is a big NO- NO
I "suggest" you practice till you are able to "indicate" the shading better till you find it to your liking.
Slayer Art/Watch/Plays xD
Quantum. True
Very helpful thank you very much... i kinda use all of them even before watching the vid but watching this cleared upthe diefferences :) do u have an insta acc where u post your stuff?
instagram.com/markcrilleyreal
do you use smudging, its my preferred way of shading then adding darks
Viewer #712,470 here, saying a sincere thank you, Mark! I'm going to give these shadings a try!
The first one looks a little more light transparent look as the second has a darker making the first a perfect flashback feel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on drawing
Wow your drawings are good even without shade, mine looks ok without shades but feels like something big is missing.
maybe its missing the flowing feeling? or maybe it feels like its missing a "lifeness" to it? those are things I have a lot of the time
Jordan B sounds like it could be it but what do you mean by that?
uhm its just something you sort of see/ feel when you look t something. I dont know the rights and wrongs of making those affects. sorry
***** WHat does that Mean?
***** Thanks for the help, I'll look into it.
how should I hold the pencil when I do the last one if im left handed?
us left handed people (kinda sounds racist but no its not lol) have a different style of grip, just like what mark-sensei did, just kinda adjust your hand from the pencil, it really matters specially if you are planning to draw a curved concave, convex etc. lines because even if you know how to use your natural pivot point, without the knowledge of how you grip the pencil in different manners of drawing, it really would be pointless..
Bob Fossil I think he meant discriminative
+GabeOFFTHEWALL yes exactly, exactly
Axcel Blaze Racist means offending with what their born with. Fortunately, what you said is a stereotype.
He mentioned in one of his books that lefties should turn the page upside down uvu
I enjoy watching your vids. I've been drawing off and on all my life, and each time, it's shading that always gives me the most trouble. I try to draw different things, but I'm just never sure where to throw the shading. The style I'm interested in is kind of a comic book style that would lend itself to inking (if I ever get there), but watching several of your vids on shading is bolstering me to just keep at it. Thanks and keep'em coming! I love the fluidity of your lines of your chara here. It's beautiful. ^_^
i like this guy he just gets straight into the video he doesn't like talk before video (kinda) but he is just explaining good job dude
My only problem is that whenever I shade, it looks like you can't really determine what direction is the light coming from.😔
Andrea Bea Same! I usually add shades at the back of the hair then the next thing is i add shades on top of the hair. It's quite tricky.
my art teacher isn't as good as you thank you
Mr. Crilley - You are a wonderful teacher.
wow! you are a youtube partner and you deserve it...your artwork is incredible everything a beginner artist needs is on your channel!!!
your good i want to be like you
YOU FORGOT THE BLUSHIES!!! :O
My sister (which is an off license illustrator) she told me to do block shading for my manga drawings, and looking at Marks shadings I can say to her I don't have to do block shading! Thanks Mark for showing those amazing ways of shading ^_^
Our art teacher (the one you find in every school) got us to do the 1st kind of shading and then use a stub (usually a paper one) to "blur" or "mix" the strokes to get the even shading that you've done on the 3rd girl... and then use a eraser to bring in the highlights.
Well, this was "another" way to get around it I guess... Thanks for this video. Definitely gained something here.
you should turn your miki falls book into an anime and put it on utube
lol it's not as simple as that.
I've never shaded before, so this really helped! Thank you!
WarriorlifeforeverAJ Glad I can help :)
markcrilley :O you reply to comments on videos that are 4 years old! You're AWESOME! Plus thx for your teachings. Your the most looked up to artist on UA-cam and I say congrats to that :))
Adrian Ajax shut up big mouth
hello mark! i have been watching your videos since i first started. your videos help me a lot. I loved the first and second Miki Falls books. i am trying to get the third one soon!
Mark thank for these videos! honestly you inspired me to start drawing anime and have helped me improve, it's been a lot of fun i can't wait till i"m as good as you at it!
Fuck.... all I have is mechanical pencils but I wanna do the 3rd one. Looks like I'm going to the 99 cent store for pencils! If they have them... they should
Levi Ackerman you don't need expensive pencils to create a great drawing. I've learned from experience. I think where you drop the most money is on the different pens, mouldable erasers, markers and dedicated shading pencils.
Weeaboo Trashski Ooh okay thanks
Thx! Now I'm really progressing in my art work because of you
OMG i'm rewatching your videos and... omg thats miki? She changed a lot.
This helped me a lot with the shading I was working on. Thanks so much!
It's amazing to see how much shading can change the feel of a drawing.
Shading option #3 gives off a more realistic and smooth look so I would try that method but I like the other two method because it's simple and gives off a nice look!
LOVED the tip about using the 1st technique for flashbacks...JUST YES
I like the way the first one looks the most, I like the sketchy effect it gives off.
I've just subscribed to your channel, markcrilley. And I'm very glad I did. You are an amazingly outstanding artist, and your video's are extremely helpful to me. Already, my Manga has improved greatly. I always had trouble with the eyes. But, thanks to you, I am now really good. So, thanks.
The second and third were my to favorite I tend to use a combination of technique two and three when I shade my drawings.
This is very helpful thanks.
I think I find myself mostly using the last technique but this has shown me two others :)
You are an awesome artist!!! Sankyuu for helping me draw!!!
Thanks for this tutorial Mark, great help, I'm drawing my own manga, and this is a great idea for drawing the flashback scenes, thanks you again!
When I made my main oc Miki. I just found out about your manga books. And I saw that you made a book series called miki falls and i was like: WOW
#3 for sure. Just wanted to say your an awesome artist, looking at your work has really helped me improve in many area's. Keep up the god work man!!!
love this, helps me SOOO much. always had a ridiculously hard time shading things.
I actually like a lot the first one! like you said we can see the nostalgic feeling and its beautiful ! :)
thank you +markcrilley it help me a lot. I started drawing when i saw your channel
I just found your channel this is the first video I watched from you...I already love your art and channel. I have a feeling that im going to be watching a lot more of your videos and favoriting them. Keep on doing what you're doing ;)
I like the last one but I don't know that I have the patience to shade like that so I might just use the second one. You are fantastic mark crilley
I like 3 the best, Cause it seems the most realistic and natural, and I love the soft feeling it gives off! 😁
I do too! I love watching him draw! ♥
The third version is the best one. Nice video.
I just finished reading Brodys Ghost 2!
Its awesome
To me, the one in the middle is the most visually appealing, but all of them look great. They all seem useful.
I love using the parallel shading technique. It's so simple. :)
Its very useful for me.
I'll be better at shading now ^^
thankyou so much mark :)
I always like the lined hair shading that follows the hair, gives it a better look, but then I prefer the third version for pretty much anything else. Well balls I like a circular kind of line shading. Thanks though this was helpful!
The third looks amazing
i want to thank you for doing that. thanks! atleast you gave me some hints how to shade and hopefully i can learn more technique in shading. :)
((I literally suck at drawing and shading and I think this is helping me understand where it's necessary to shade in and stuff, thanks!))
This is a smashing video!
This is kinda an eye-opening for me, especially for the way of shading. Thank you, thaaaaaaaank you so much~!
This video helped me so much. You rock markcrilley!
love how smooth his drawing is
You're so talented it's disgusting. I love your work!
Wow! I really like the first one!
This video helped me so much! I couldn't shade squat-diddly before.
Love the vids you put out! Thanks alot they have helped tons!
Good shading tech man it really helped me to gain a shading spirit and made my drawing awesome 0.0
wow all of these ways are GREAT !!
THANKS!
that was legendary! "this is a way"... crash "ops" hat was the tripod
Well, currently I'm making a... manga... first one as well, the regular pencil I use for school doesn't really help in this situation. So I just tried my mechanical pencil I got in an ink set and I just tried these. Works fine. BTW you're amazing.
Thanks for sharing, I think this will really help me!
I always used the second one.... but never thought about third....its amazing
