I second that. I was watching Agadmator since 2017/2018 and feel bad that he is usually left out of mentioning for what he has achieved for the community. At least I hope they still speak his name in some library or bar.
I agree Agadmator was first for me and First to 1 Million Subscribers I think. I ran across Gotham a little while after. I really stink at Chess I have purchased two copies of Levy’s Book one for me and one for my grandson I have only read one chapter and my grandson has never read one word. So my plan to learn chess with my grandson never happened. Other sports won out.
I was actually watching some chess lecture guy (i forget his name.... Ivan?) and then youtube recommended me agamator because of him and then gothamchess came later
It's a damn shame Antonio/Agadmator rarely, if ever, gets any credit. Dude's been grinding out videos since 2017. I also believe he was the first chess tuber who reached 1 million subs. He's not a super high level player/analyst, I don't even think he's rated, but he has a great understanding of the game and a fun delivery.
Yes, Agadmator is the first chess youtube channel to reach 1 million subscribers. It was a monumental achievement at the time, it basically marked the start of the chess boom. Agadmator was drawing in thousands and up to even millions of views to historic and modern games alike, he was doing all this long before GothamChess or Hikaru.
Me too. I had played chess exactly once as a little kid, wasn't taught well, and totally lost interest until Queen's Gambit, and the pandemic providing lots of free time.
I got seriously into chess since the lockdown began, the first content creator to ever draw me in was Agadmator, before any boom in the chess world happened.
Carlsen literally hosted the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour in 2020 during corona and we now have the Champions Chess Tour every year. Without Carlsen Hikaru wouldn't have any tournaments to make content about.
When Levy does these type of videos, he should be a gentleman and mention Chess Network (Jerry, the first big streamer) and Agadmator (Antonio, the second and even bigger) who were undoubtedly the most influential chess streamers way before Gotham and GmHikaru.
When Josh writes these types of comments, he should be a gentleman and mention Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the World Wide Web) and Larry Page (former CEO of Google, which owns UA-cam) who were undoubtedly the most influential internet people way before Josh.
started off watching Agad. Classical chess matches, modern spin, and just overall great strategy. Not sure why I started watching Levy but he' entertaining at the least.
The first and biggest spike in chess history was the Fischer/Spassky championship. We don’t have easy access to data to quantify this statement but I lived through it and it is impossible to overstate the effect it had. The whole world was following it. Shelby Lyman became as famous as Walter Cronkite in the US. People didn’t tune into the TV news, they tuned into the chess match. The battle wasn’t an artificially created rivalry, it was the test of American freedom and democracy versus the industrialized, subsidized Soviet chess machine.
I totally agree. I had been playing chess casually, off and on, since I was a little kid, but started rated chess a couple of years after Fischer-Spassky. That was when a Canadian Open tournament attracted 600 (!!!) players, nowhere near that since those days.
Love to see people giving shoutouts to Agadmator, and deservedly so but ChessNetwork and Chessbrah were two of the first who started making online content and are the main reason I got into chess.
I remember years ago when you were taking off, I was thinking, "Wow, this guy might surpass Agadmator on UA-cam." It was how you covered multiple games in one video with high energy. You were absolutely right that most people don't care to do super deep analysis of individual games.

Such a great video! There’s no point in discussing who did the most. They all had their roles in making chess more popular. That’s like deciding if soccer is popular because of the players or the commentators and tv channels that broadcast it. They’re dependent on each other.

12 years ago, 60 Minutes aired a story about Carlsen (The Mozart of Chess). Even though he had not even won his first championship yet, it elevated worldwide interest in chess to a level beyond Fischer-Spassky, beyond Kasparov vs. Deep Blue, beyond any amount of streaming Nakamura will ever do.
Nothing compares to the Bobby Fischer era. That was the golden age of chess. Chess was as popular as any other major sport, followed by millions. I was first introduced to chess during the Queen's Gambit, as so many of us were, but I didn't get into it until the WSJ featured the Magnus v Hans drama. I couldn't turn away, starting watching the Botez sisters and they were fun but couldn't keep my attention. My brothers both were chess players and they must have told me 20 times to watch your videos if I wanted to learn how to play because they were educational and fun.
