Rene Herse Humptulips Ridge tire review

- The Rene Herse Humptulips Ridge tires are the the most expensive tires I’ve ever bought in my entire life. So what exactly drove me towards deciding this tire over its competitors? That’s what you’re going to find out in this video.
The reason I was looking for a new set of tires was fairly straightforward. I bought a 1991 Koga Miyata Skyrunner Carbolite who’d been sitting in someone’s garage for years.
Since the tires it came with had probably been exposed to the sun, they had completely disintegrated, which is a common issue with skinwall tires.
Since the bike had almost all original components and I’m kind of a purist when it comes to restoring a bike, I looked up what type of tires were factory installed. They turned out to be Specialized Extreme 1.95 tires. Extremely rare, and extremely expensive.
Because I knew I would go for a replacement I did some research into 26 inch tan-wall MTB tires. There aren’t all that many but the one that stood out, mainly because of the price tag, was the Humptulips Ridge tire.

The Dart & the HR tires are actually the same width when you measure it. The HR in actuality are slightly smaller than 2.3 label at 2.15-2.22 in size and the Dart measure out to 2.15.
I'm always puzzled when people by expensive bikes but skimp on tires. Yes they're expensive but they transform the bike. I love the 650b version, but they are multipurpose tires, the Darts which I rode for years on old mountain bikes are great for off-road but suck if you have an hour each way, to approach to the off road section of a ride.
Crazy nice bike by the way
Out of curiosity, what are those bar ends? I have the Rene Herse Rat Trap Pass on my 1992 Kona Hei Hei Ti but now wish I'd gotten the Humptulips Ridge since I now own a brand new Ti gravel bike. Thanks for the video. Cheers!
Syncros Steerhorns, the best bar ends I've ever ridden.
@@restorationdotbike Thanks. They look like they give the hoods position.
What do they actually measure out to at the widest point when fitted thanks
Did you have any issues with clearance on the chain stays near the bottom bracket with the 2.3 width?
No, I don't
have you setup those tubeless?
No I haven't
How was it on pavement mate? =)
I managed to push this bike to 45km or 27 mph on a straight. The tires will make a sound like a thousand angry bees if you do. I'm just an average Joe in terms of power output, so I guess that's fast enough.
WARNING: DO NOT BUY RENE HERSE! Rene Herse's customer service is terrible. Went for a refund on a poor quality product. They wouldn't do it. If their tire is defective or doesn't fit you will not get a refund/exchange. No customer service phone number either. Your better off with a more mainstream retailer and manufacturer
