  • UA-cam has domonetized my channel for not adding value through editing. The appeal failed. UA-cam still happy to run ads for themselves but not share the profits with me. I have a backlog of videos to upload but do not plan on making any more.
This side-by-side comparison between Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989) and its 2023 live-action remake is intended to illustrate the different visual choices made by two groups of filmmakers telling the same story.
    edited by Matt Skuta
Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):
“A Moveable Feast” by Aaron Paul Low
    “Undercurrents” by Tobias Voigt
    “Arrival” by Arend
    “Muse” by Braden Deal
“Commanding The Fleet” by Benjamin Botkin
    “Ignite” by All Good Folks

I know I’ll get hate for this, but the Animated is way better than the live action but to be fair I feel that way about all of the animated Disney movies versus their life action counterparts the animated ones are just better in my opinion.

Oh, I never expected that you would make a comparison video of these two movies. I'm filled with joy about this as the original "The Little Mermaid" has been my all-time favorite Disney classic since I was a kid and now, as an adult, I've loved the live action even more (despite the criticism). So, thank you so much Matt, I think I'm going to watch this video on repeat now, get ready for tons of views just from me haha.

I love it when live action is faithful to the original. Although I obviously prefer the live action animated version, I liked the relationship between Ariel and Eric more and that the film did not end with a silly wedding, considering that the characters had known each other for less than a week. And I also like that it is Ariel who defeats Ursula, since it would be like her act of redemption for the mistakes she made.

LOL It doesn't make sense Ariel being the one to defeat Ursula given she's not a sailor like Eric and his acts of heroism prove to Triton and the mer kingdom the integrity of good humans. With Ariel defeating Ursula, there's no reason for them to owe respect or trust Eric or any human. Am I the only one thinking logically here? Plus, she has fins and it looked ridiculous. And by the way, Disneys been avoiding doing weddings now for eons so not sure why we can't have one again.

Your skills are sharp and with good luck good fortune will still find you and give a place to put your work that allows you to be as enriched as those of us who get to see your work. Find the place and make it happen. It's worth it.

I appreciate it. My day job is visual effects for film and television which is very fulfilling but this was always a fun thing to do to fill in the gaps between shows. I doubt I’ll stop entirely but there isn’t really any incentive to do it regularly.

@@MatthewSkuta Now that's actually kind of interesting, because I have no idea how much you made off showing them on youtube but was it the money that made you spend all the hours doing the work? I am not saying getting paid for labour isn't satisfying, but did it really pay that much? I keep hearing the days of wine and roses for youtubers is quickly ending. I don't know what to believe in that regard, none of my channels are monetized, I do everything on my own and just hope it makes the world better for a moment or two.
Have you considered adding vocal inserts of intros and short description interruptions and an outro? it will be strong cause for reversal of banning those type going forward. AI voices are really good now so you can use those if it's more desirable.
I just really wonder when you had the idea to do these was it to get rich or something else? if it was something else - feed that beast still.
Whatever you choose, I appreciate what you have done and shared.

@@TheRadioAteMyTV I started making these videos because they were interesting to me. From the beginning, I have never asked anyone to like or subscribe.
I did not make these videos in a way that was conducive to making any money in that I used the scores from the film. Any revenue was rightfully shared between the music licenser and UA-cam.
I never applied for monetization until 2023 and was approved. I figured it might be nice to finally make a couple of bucks from UA-cam between projects and have the motivation to develop a more regular release schedule.
I changed my methodology for music and started using music from Uppbeat which I licensed. After uploading the Forrest Gump side-by-side my channel was demonetized.
I’m frustrated by the disingenuous reason for the demonetization more than the actual money involved. Money will be made from these videos, all of which will go to UA-cam.
If I make any more side-by-sides, they will only be ones I am personally interested in doing, not just filling a schedule. Right now, there is only one I haven’t edited yet that I would still like to do. I’m waiting on a bluray to arrive from Mexico in order to do it.

@@MatthewSkuta Totally understand everything you said, and you are more than right about their decision process, it's not hard to figure out why they shut you out. Why pay the middle man?
Why it is legal to run ads on channels and not pay channel creators is a slam on congress, not the greedy who will always exist.
It really did warm my heart that your "day job" already is rewarding your talent. So many others have not had the same good fortune, regardless of skills. I always love a happy ending.
Who knows what good will also come from all of us who produce for the sake of art, but don't mind a few doubloons in the guitar case along the way?
      Best to you going forward.

In terms of following the original storyline, the 2023 live action did it so well without being so overboard, unlike Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, just enough changes that's needed to be improved upon the OG.
This makes it my second favorite after Cinderella (2015).
Regardless of what everyone says, Halle literally embodied Ariel so much! The other actresses who did try for her role won't be able to get her like how Halle did it.

Just saw this film all the way through today and man, it sucks! Ariel doesn't need any help ever from anyone, not one clearly likes weddings, many scenes are rushed, acting is bad from many characters, etc. No wonder everyone's forgotten about this film already. It feels like it should have another title and Ariel should have another name because it's not The Little Mermaid period. The Hans Christian Anderson quote at the beginning turned me off in just the first 15 seconds because they are referencing him to make it look like they care, but then they also ignore other things he said and quoted in the story like the fact that Ariel had very pale, white skin. Go figure! Just the original for me, thanks Disney!
