The 2013 version catered to a more modern audience, hence the music. They wanted it to be relatable and make the audience feel what it was probably like if we lived in the same era. Stop the hate. Both films are amazing

Mark Acantilado yeah that is true... but tbh it was unnecessary because we as audience should relate to the story not much the style and music. In fact that is what makes the Great Gatsby a such classic...the fact we all relate to the main characters in different ways. That is what transcends time and generations.
If anything the 2013 version just shows the style of the director. He is the same person who did the “updated” version of Romeo and Juliet in 1996.

There are differences. Pros and Cons. Personally, I would much prefer the 74 version, mainly because of different reasons. It tried to be bit closer to the book, it has some good actors that fitted the role. (I didn't like Redford as Gatsby, De Caprio is actually perfect) There were some parts of the recent film that made me raise my eyebrow. Do I like the music? It's okay. Does it fit the film? (mainly the time period) Not really. If I had the power, I'd make things different on somethings: the music would be slightly more of the 20s, (an example of Young and Beautiful by Post Modern Jukebox) the outfits in the recent does seem to match more of the 20s, while the 74 has some neat bits of clothing, it does have a bit of subtlety that doesn't make it too flashy. Scott Wilson did much better as Wilson. (coincidence, I know) Both Tom's were more or less the same. Toby McGuire as Nick felt odd and didn't feel like it fit. The flashiness while nice and fits a bit of the book just feels a bit too much and over done in the recent film. There is a lot I am jabbering on about both and it is my opinion. There is a pro con bubble with this. Again if I had the power (or money or neccesary parts to edit properly) to change the movie of a lot of things, I would be able to, while it might be personal to me since a lot may not like the ideas. I did like the book (while I have noticed some flaws from family) and I am someone who loves history too, and with some authenticity, it isn't always perfect. So as long as there are these pros and cons, I don't really care as long as they have a certain value with both films. It's all thoughts.

In the 2013 movie, none of the rooms in the house are authentic to the construction of the period. It is all contemporary fantasy so it always just feels like a contemporary movie, and because of that, it never achieves the dreamlike feeling of the book. The 2013 film feels like an annoying person on drugs, so hyper and screeching. Neither the 1974 version nor the 2013 version are good movies. The 1974 version achieves the aesthetic feeling of the 1920's though. The 2013 version does not feel like the 1920's and it doesn't feel like the book. The 2013 version is empty. The 1974 version feels poorly thought-out and poorly directed. There's never been a good movie based off The Great Gatsby.

It seems this is an unpopular opinion but I felt like the 2013 version captured the essence much better in the way it was acted and personally I love how bright and gaudy it is. That’s the way the book is. It truly captures the decadence described in the book. And the modern music(which outside the film I wouldn’t listen to btw) only makes it more relatable to a modern day party yet keeps that 1920s vibes

I'm a teacher--taught TGG for 10+ years and read it...god...nearly 30 times... and I love the 2013 version, in part, for the way it works in the text or text with slight updates. It also follows the plot better. However, the 1972 version also is beautiful for the way it reaches into Fitzgerald's biography (cf. Daisy saying that "Rich girls don't marry poor boys" is an adaption of a slight by G. King's father--Fitzgerald's love before Zelda, although the same gets used but is directed at Nick... or the polo grounds scene which Fitzgerald writes about in personal letters). I appreciate the update to Daisy in the 2013--less vapid crying and more lines and cynicism. Oddly enough, I feel the same way about BL version of Romeo and Juliet versus the Zeffirelli version.
I'd second your observations: the essence is truer to the 1920's that FSF lived--hell, he and Zelda often ended up dancing in fountains during their stint as the It Couple.

why do things have to relatable to the modern day? the modern day and its people are lost forever.....the past is the only living thing. The modern day 2013 version of the book is inflated and shows how inflated we are today.... we need to be wowed.... we need to be swept away by the bigger and the better..... The 1974 version is far more realistic in my opinion and shows the realism of the 1920s for what they were.... The 2013 version has inflated the largely inaccurate vision of the past. The use of camera shots.... the colours... the fashion style are all a massive dazzle that distracts the audience away from the story. The 20s fashion of the 74 version was more accurate. For example. The 74 soundtrack matched the mood of the book. When I watched the 1974 version I felt i was able to understand what was happening.... when I watched the 2013 version things were very unclear. A good adaptation is able to capture the story.... to be able to show the past..... the modern audience these days are being baby fed with baby food..... we expect the unexpected... all the famous faces... the buzzing action.....and this is why Hollywood has stopped making good movies.

Apart from the comparison, can we appreciate how both the actors capture THE SMILE of Gatsby mentioned in the book? 8:18 Gatsby needed to hear that praise, he prolly wasn't told enough that he was a good man at his heart and the people around him were all selfish. He had to hear that once before he died.

Still don’t like the new version. It’s just weird and the flashiness distracts from the movie. The CGI is also outdated now, even though that’s not really their fault it still looks bad. The music is really out of place and those fucking corny ass shots of Gatsby in front of newspapers and shit are retarded. I think they just said how could we make a classic American novel and make it with bright and colorful cgi with Jayz and other modern pop music so that the retarded modern day audiences will understand. I love shitting on this movie because it’s like just the perfect example of how 21st century movie studios don’t know wtf their audiences want so they just try to dumb it down so that everyone can enjoy, but instead everyone hates or try’s to defend by saying the colors were pretty or some shit

I love both versions but I prefer 1974, I feel like it went more in depth. In the 2013 version I didnt even realize that Nick and Jordan was supposed to be a thing... The 2013 version is definietely fun and easier to watch though. I love the character of Nick in the 1974 version... and I found Daisy to be very unlikable in that one which I believe is the whole point. In the 2013 version they make her seem so fragile and innocent whereas in the old version she seems that way at first glance but if you look closer you can tell she is detached and only interested in money and having fun. I havent read the book because neither of the movie adaptions has inspired me to do so to be honest, but this is how I feel about the movies. Basically the 2013 version is more fun to watch but if you want something you need to concentrate more on and pay more attention to the 1974 version is the one to go with, it is more serious.

    • @jonanddy
      @jonanddy 2 роки тому

@@satisfyingnai2080 realistic? Sure, but the 1974 adaptation was very bland. The 2013 version incorporated what readers imagined when reading the Great Gatsby, so it makes sense to make the most recent film very vibrant and dramatic (including attire used in the ‘20s for the upper class) as opposed to the dull and monotonous tone that was used throughout the 1974 film. The ‘74 one could be considered realistic, it isn’t terrible, but it feels very uncreative and boring

Reading these comments make me so happy. I thought I was the only one who preferred the 2013 version, it is so incredible. The fast-pace, the vibrancy, the chaos of it is exactly how I imagined it to be like in the book. It's supposed to have a sort of discomfort to it, because a huge theme in the book is that this type of riotous carelessness is dangerous yet attractive with its glitz and glamour. It's rampant among people from the West, and finds its way to erupt in the East. Carelessness and chaos is what leads to this story becoming a tragedy, and Nick realizes this only AFTER he was swept away with it. I would ALWAYS prefer a new, unique, personable adaptation to an old story than making a carbon copy of another person's ideas. Luhrman did a brilliant job.

I’ve only ever seen the 2013 one, the older one looks good too but I love the color and contrast in the newest one compared to all the others. I’m a visual person and 2013 looks almost exactly how I pictured it when I read it the first time. The filmmakers definitely knew what they were doing, and to them props to that 💕.
Gatsby‘s death does not have the same dramatics as I think it does with 2013 compared to 1774. It was distressingly beautiful while the older one was depressingly quick like it would be realistically. From an artistic standpoint, the newest one is my favorite.

They obviously are not shot with the same film. 2013 is shot digitally and 1974 on a stock discontinued in late 70s (Eastman 5254). However, the 2013 is oversaturated like many/all Luhrmann's films while 1974 is desaturated like many 70s New Hollywood movies where intentionally degrading the image in various ways was popular to distance themselves from the colorful and saturated Old Hollywood look. The stock itself is quite possibly the most beautiful Kodak has ever made (at least colourwise, it obviously was grainier and not as sharp as modern ones).

I would recommend watching the 1974 version if you have read the book and have the patience to watch the whole movie. It captures the emotions in every important scene, especially the ending bit that the newer movie didn't include, probably due to run time. My biggest problem about the 2013 version was that it focused more on the grand set design and costumes, and made the characters a little too dull even if that was the point. I would watch the newer movie if you want a basic recap of the story that isn't as dragged out as the 1974 version.

When you act you have to make the viewers feel the movie. 1974 you can feel the emotions you can see Gatsby's fantasy in his head while also seeing the real world in the 1920's. 2013 was beautiful but the death scene really did it for me 2013 was terrible at the whole death he just stood there when he was shot with no emotion his body didn't even react

While I appreciate and respect the 1974 Gatsby, it just isn’t “big” enough. It’s too stiff and dramatic, as opposed to the looseness and extravagance of the 2013 version.
I think the 2013 version is closer to the actual book in terms of the “vibe”, but I’m not gonna blame the ‘74 version just because they had more limitations of the time.

It took him a whole three minutes before he died. 1974 is more realistic he got shot his body twitched and reacted and he fell into the water where his blood began pouring out of his body💀

The death scene in 2013 was terrible it looked like Gatsby was swimming in the water and there was barely any blood. 1974 was quick like it would be realistically he got shot and his body reacted his body went into the water and the blood was also coloring the water. The 2013 movie was made in the same fashion as the 90's Romeo and Juliet; they were both made to give you the feel of a graphic novel, with incredible acting, exaggerated characters, vivid colors, fast pace, exaggerated cinematography, extremely nuanced, dynamic, and charismatic performances.
By the way, the Paul Rudd/Mira Sorvino version was utterly gutless and insufferably boring, with not a single engaging performance nor any vibe of the outrageous and excessively ostentatious vibe of the Jazz Age/Roaring Twenties in New York.

I dont understand the argument of it has modern music therefore I dont like it. I guess it's no different from me not liking Mias Daisy but eh... If you can get passed the music choices, 2013 is visually a far superior film. There is a focus, there is depth, not every scene is either beige or stark white.
The art direction for 2013 is just better.
Notice how the camera in 74 is almost always centered on the misground. When the camera doesnt change let alone move faster than a snail's pace, your movie looks boring.

It's funny how for such a visual story as The Great Gatsby the saying "the sound is everything you see" rings true. 2013 has terrible soundtrack, it's like trying to play heavy metal music over intimate bedroom scene. If they really wanted to make it more modern (or just treat the audience as a bunch of idiots), why didn't they choose some kind of electro swing, Parov Stelar kind of thing; it would fit perfectly.
Also the 2013 version completely misses the point of Fitzgerald's novel: American Dream is bullshit and if 1974 version makes you feel depressed, well... it should. That's the point. It also glamorizes Gatsby and his lifestyle and shows Nick in a more innocent and honest light than he really is in the novel.
It seems that people who prefer 2013 version never read the book, and (most of) those who like 1974 better, did. Of course it's not the matter of life and death and these are only movies, but even after color grading comparison it's looks as a comparison between traditional filmmaking of 1974 (old money) and big budget modern show-off of 2013 (new money).
Anyway, DiCaprio is fantastic as Gatsby, but after watching this video I realized that Redford was actually perfect for the role. No hard feelings. Cheers, old sports.
