Ugh. Love Brutus. Their in-studio performance of “War” is phenomenal.

Absolutely love Brutus, super creative, super fun, bit punky too. The genre would probably be post-hardcore which sits in the same realm as post-rock and post-metal.

Brutus deserves waaay more recognition. Both of their albums are amazing. And yes, you need to check out War (live at Rain City). Even if you don't do a video about it.

Love love love Brutus! Like you say, it is amazing what a massive sound they can produce with just the three of them. And she is so very expressive in both her drumming and singing, so much power behind both. Btw I don't think there is a backing track. At the end when the other band members have stopped playing you can still see the guitarist strumming, and the effect pedals are what sustain the sound after he has stopped.

What you say about the feeling of loneliness despite the very dense sound is something I get from a lot of shoegaze. I think there's something very "cosmic" about how that genre conjures this very vast aesthetic with the rich textures, especially the echo/reverb/delay/etc. drenched guitars. I think maybe the "loneliness" is similar to how one might look up at the expanse of the night sky on a clear night, pondering the immensity of the cosmos and feeling very small and alone. The aesthetic is so vast that it tends to make the listener feel small and lonely by comparison. I also think that's a general effect of just putting all those effects on the guitar, because the actual sound of the guitar itself seems to be like a lone voice echoing in an empty expanse. Pink Floyd is perhaps the band that first struck me as having this kind of aesthetic (not always, but often).

This is an older video, but it got recommended to me by the algorithm after I listened to their new album "Unison Life". Amazing band, amazing performance.
Would def recommend the new album if you ever have the time!

Thanks for this. I had totally forgot about Brutus. I've added them to my listen list so that I don't make that mistake again. I didn't even know they had a new album.

Brutus are very, very weird - and I mean that as a big compliment. They throw things together that feel like they shouldn't work together, and yet they do. The buildup to that explosive/emotional ending is why this live performance is much better than the studio version: she doesn't belt that high note in the original. In my humble opinion, that moment ties the whole song together.
And as others have said, I'm pretty sure the guitar in the end is just a loop pedal. Great analysis :)

Really good song. I guess you'd call this post-gaze? It has both the post-metal "wall-of-sound" thing but with more emphasis on the beautiful, ethereal aesthetics of shoegaze than the post-metal bands that are more consistently harsh. Whatever the genre I found myself really enjoying this. I think both the instrumental sections and the vocal sections were captivating, despite being extremely different in volume and texture. In a way it reminded me of the classic "quiet verses to loud choruses" of grunge, but here it's the wall-of-sound instrumental bits acting as the chorus. Great climax too, if maybe a bit too "out-of-nowhere," but its surprise probably helps contribute to the power of it. Definitely a band I can see myself getting into.

It's an interesting idea but I can totally see that grunge comparison. Which probably tells me a little about why I enjoyed this because Grunge is one of those genres that pretty consistently plays with dynamic contrast and this band certainly did as well.

I've seen a few guitar players using a lot of pedals and then engaging some reverb/compressor combo to fill the space or keep the last chord ring on (forgive me if that's not the correct terms, not a musician myself), I'm not saying this is the case here, but i have seen this before.

Ah true, hadn't thought of pedals and such. Electric instruments are so outside of my usual realm that I don't even initially think of pretty basic stuff like that 😅

The first full week of July just might be new songs because BTBAM, Leprous, Jinjer, and a few others all released stuff this last week. It's a great time to be a metal listener!

First Fragment just released a new song called "Pantheum". They're one of the most talented technical death metal bands in my opinion. Would love to see you check them out.
