When my daughter was 13 she made a cake from scratch and called me and said it didn't rise. I asked her if she put baking soda in, she said no. The recipe called for soda, so she put in a teaspoon of cola. She is now 44 and we still laugh about this.
that so funny!
That is adorable
i love that lol
I'm a pastry chef now, but when I made my first apple pie for a boy I had a crush on, I forgot the sugar. My dad has always teased me that I was trying to get the boy to "pucker up". Its funny now...it wasn't then! ;)
@@teresabrockett7525 well, you made a Hungarian apple pie! We put little to no sugar in our fruity desserts
My cakes changed COMPLETELY when I bought my scale, best purchase ever
Scales are lifechanging!
Same for me. I use it often & for everything. I'm like a kid with his toy when I use it.
You've convinced me to buy a scale. With so many options, is there one that you recommend (or must have features that a novice kitchen scale shopper should look for)?
@@colleenm5760 I have a digital STARFRIT brand one. Simple, small, easy to use. It's got grams, ounces & other functions I don't really use. I mainly use it for weighing stuff, so I use grams. For sure there are other brands out there. It's got a glass top/base easy to clean. Fun to use. PS: I would stay away from the dialed ones. The ones with the spring shaft. Digital ones are more precise.
It seems really odd to me that anyone WOULDN’T use scales, but that’s because we don’t use measuring cups at all in the UK. We have small measuring spoons, for liquids, but not cups.
I desperately need a “Top 5 dough making mistakes” video.

#1(?) not testing your yeast to make sure it's not dead.
@@bpal7006 How do I know if it’s dead or alive?
sameee
@@handekai8500 Firstly, put in a warm water. If it does not become bubbly and increase its amount after a few minutes, then it's dead.
I'm only now realizing that room temp ingredients are important! Domed cakes were my life lol
No more cake trimming for you! 🎉
Me too
cake strips help, too. you can see them in his video. i never bake a cake without them, even in a 9x13 pan.
Same. I never knew why until now.
@@blueeyedbehr I use the Wilton cloth cake baking stripes. How do you make cake stripes stay in a 9 ×13 rectangular pan? I even have trouble making them stay in a circular pan.
This was really good.
I've been baking for decades and I thought I knew it all. But this was a tremendously useful reminder to go back to basics. It pointed out that I've gained a lot of bad habits over the years and should re-learn simplicity.
So many, many thanks. It was a useful kick-up-the-ass that baking is a science and not moss-covered tradition.
I agree. This was very helpful. Thanks John 🧁
Me too…. I think I knew these tips long ago….. good to get a refresher! Ty Jon!
I feel the same way. It is amazing how you don't realise you make these errors and they matter to the final result.
Love this guy -- he's about the best baker on YT. Love his recipes and demeanor.
Middle school, math and science teacher.
Great tips! Thanks. I learned about weighing everything when I lived in Germany. Even liquids! I have to admit, metric is easier when it comes to this.
It's so true!
Can we make this a series?? Doughs, pie crusts, pastries, cookies, muffins….. tell me how to not fuck it all up!💖
And pancakes please
agree!! baking do and dont 101
@@sophiallthingsxena4369 the “trick” for perfect pancakes is similar to a cake. don’t over mix, preheat your griddle(if using a skillet: make 1 big pancake at a time. I use Pamela’s gluten free mix, premix my egg, swap in some buttermilk and fold in a little extra melted butter from seasoning the skillet. I get perfect fluffy pancakes every time (kid’s favorite breakfast).
yes, please!
THIS THIS THIS
Thank you! I never knew that about measuring flour! I haven't noticed issues with regular scooping and sifting, but I'll take all the advice I can get! Actually planning on trying to make an ice cream cake today! Thanks so much and those graphics were something to behold!
First of all, this channel is amazing! John feels like a friend teaching me, always caring, friendly, funny, smart, but also honest and open about making mistakes like everybody else... love it!
And this has to be one of my favorite videos, because I do a lot of these mistakes and even tho my cakes turn out fine most of the time, some of these results happened to me and I didn't understand why. I also believe that I'm missing out on my cakes being even more delicious!
I never weighed my ingredients til I started watching you. What a difference it makes. 🙂❤
I bake very simple things once in a while but I looove desserts and am always wanting to bake more. I’ve been looking for something just like this! It’s hard to learn baking basics if you don’t have a lot of experience or don’t know other people that do either. Would love to watch an entire series for other forms of baked goods like pies, cookies, breads etc.! 😊🙏
Thankyou for such amazing videos - of all the food videos - yours are my absolute favourites - I could watch yours all day. You have the best tips and explanations, and I have been baking for 40 years. I love the flour measure tip - you SO right!
Good tip on ALMOST until mixed completely THEN finish folding and mixing by hand! FANTASTIC TIP!
Super great rules to follow… I never knew the flour trick until I started watching your tutorials, then I bought a scale and follow you STEP BY STEP. Thank you ! You are amazing ❤
love preppy kitchen thank you for your advise wishing you a prosperous new year full of sweetness and saltiness 💕
GREAT tips! Thank you John!
This video has helped me a lot. I've shared it more times than I can count. I'm so glad I came across your channel
I love the way you simplify everything, even the things I thought were so complicated. Thank you
thanks John. I have taken lots of hints from you but weighing the flour has been the biggest help. It is so simple but it never had occurred to me before...
Thank you so much for the tips!
From now on I will make sure everything is at room temperature and I will buy a scale for measuring.
I always hand mix my batter with a whisk. I always wondered what would happen if I over mixed my batter so, thank you for explaining this.
So helpful and easy to correct - thank you !!💕
Love this video! I thought I’m a seasoned baker … but I still learned from this! Thanks.
Thanks John!!!! Really Appreciate these tips 👌🏻
Thank you! Love your stuff. I made the lemon cupcakes and got the best compliments imaginable. It was also the first time I weighed out my flour....
Just love how you explain things and your videos are fun to watch.
Love your videos, great tips, great recipes. Thank you!!!
A video on reasons for cookie fails would be helpful. I’ve had delicious cookies that wouldn’t stick together before and I don’t know why. Thank you!
Yes!!! I once made chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. Turned into a giant glob in the oven. I refused to waste my time and effort so i made it into cookie balls. My mom came over and saw them on the plate on the counter and thought I made meatballs for dinner 😂 they did not look appetizing but they tasted great haha
Your channel is such a wealth of information. I over mixed my batters before finding your channel. My bakes have significantly improved in the years I've been following you.
Love all you make and made quite a few things and thank you they’ve been a great hit!
OMG!! I have been making the #2 mistake!! No wonder!! Thanks for the great tips!!
I have learned sooooo much about baking from this man! I really do love him.....his demeanor and his videos!!!
Thanks for the great tips John!
Invaluable advice thank you
Watching you, I know what not to do and what to do the correct way. You have taught me so much stuff, I feel like I should be a professional baker! Thanks John!
Thanks John for all the tips. I'm old and retired and new to decorating. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Thank you so much for this video. I am so excited to try this for my next cake!!
This channel is fantastic and I love this video format! It would be great to have other top 5s in this style!
I love your energy and your smile 🥺and your voice is so soothing ❤️
I learned something new from you as to why we should measure with a scale. Thank you!
I love to bake but clearly I’ve been doing somethings wrong this whole time lol
Thank you for this video so helpful!
Very useful. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for all the tips.
Thank you. I appreciate the do not do list and the reasons behind each one.
Awesome! Thank you for this!
Great advice John.
Thank you for all the helpful tips. I finally bought a scale and it's made such a difference. My only problem has not been letting my cold ingredients warm up. Thanks for the reminder. 😀
Have you seen me with butter and Cream cheese in my pocket?? Helps to get them to room temp but don't forget about them!
@@PreppyKitchen I totally put them in my apron as well lol 😆
Thank you so much for these tips. I know I'm guilty of over mixing and not measuring my flour properly. This was extremely helpful.
These are very useful tips. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Wow big difference when u use a scale to measure the flour . I had no idea. No more scooping the flour.Excellent tips John thanks.
Ahhh I knew I'd get called out here for always forgetting to have my butter be room temp but wow I had no idea that it wasn't just the butter. Also that flour tip and hand mixing the last half of your ingredients is really good to know too. I'm preparing to make a 4th of July cake so thank you so much!
Please make more of this type of content for other baked goods. I'm sure many home-bakers will benefit from it 😊
Great video John !! I always appreciate your tips! 👍👌😊
I have learned sooooo much even having baked for tons of years. My biggest frustration is oven temperatures even with thermometers inside. Every oven seems to be different in terms of temperature. We retired in Mexico several years ago and I have finally mastered metric. Also, we moved three times in three years for different reasons; more to the point, each oven was soooo different some gas, one electric. It’s been fun and your videos are a great help and certainly, in some cases, learning new tricks. Muchas gracias!
That strawberry cake you made has got to be one of the prettiest cakes I've ever seen, and my mom was a wedding cake decorator!

So very true about measuring with a scale. I couldn't believe the difference! Great video as always💯💐
Thank you for this, I'm going to try out one or some of your recipes tomorrow ❤
Thank you so very much John!
Thanks, really helpful Mr preppy
Thank you so much. Have learned alot
I have baked for over 50 years and have made all these mistakes! Thank you for the hint about the flour and over Mixing! My last cake was dry so maybe that was the problem. Just goes to show me I can always learn more. And it seems if I just bake for just us it’s perfect, but for a special occasion or for company Murphy’s law applies. Many years ago made a chocolate cake when my parents visited. Turned my back and our Great Dane was licking the cake! Funny now, but not then.
Love the video, I have mis measured my flour so many times. Thanks!
I just started baking this year - good to know about the flour measurement issue.
I really love your videos, full of tips and delicious recipes 😍😍😍thank you ❤
Always give great advice
I’m slowly starting to get into baking. I’m a horrible cook but I love to bake sweets. I made a strawberry shortcake and while not the best looking thing, it tasted SO good. It wasn’t sugary and was perfect.❤ I hope this video helps.
Loved this video!! Thank you so much!
Very informative 👍🏻 thanks for sharing
Love these tips! Thank you!!!
Awesome video chef.. Thanks a ton
Thanks so much for these tips.
Great tips. Thanks Jonathon.
I love your oven 🤗. The knobs are so cute 🙌🏾
Thank you soo much for this!! Honestly a life saver!
I got a kitchen scale after I started watching these videos, and it is SO much easier and faster! I have learned a lot about baking from you for sure. I have to say, I am a bit disappointed we didn't get to see any disasters...😁
Thanks John. Learned a lot from this video. Explains why I'm not always 100% satisfied with my cakes. This will change now thanks to you . David
Thank you !!! I really needed this 💕
The flour tip is especially true. Great video
Thank you very much for this video. Very, very useful!!!!!!🤩

Thank you for these tips! Very helpful 😊👍
You're so welcome!
Thank you these tips are pretty handy! 😊
If you open up your oven before the minimum baking time that's required, you can offset the temperature of the oven and that can cause flops such as deflation
Thnk you for the advice much love ❤❤
You are so welcome!
Very helpful 👍 thanks 😊
Very useful tips! 🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
this was informative and exciting!! I love it!
That Tres Leches cake is a favourite amongs my family members.
This is such a fun video. Please consider to make more of this types of videos. I am a beginner in the kitchen, so this helps me so much. I learn a lot of things' in the kitchen.
To me the kitchen is like exploring the universe, a lot of fun and learning.
I made many mistakes so far, and some of those mistakes could have really been prevented, some were quiet expensive mistakes.
I made a 2 tier cake once, the biggest mistake was not to cut off the dome. It did not collapse at all. I learnt three major things with that 2 tier cake. All's well that ends well.
Thanks a lot bunch for the entertainment videos you make. It means very much to me.
Thank you for this. Yes should be a series because I can't believe I didn't know any of these. Seem simple but never taught it.
Amazing video... Really helpful.. Thank you for sharing this video 👍👍👍
The fluff not sprinkle. Brilliant!
This was so helpful, thank you.👍😊
