This is a hidden detail, but if you notice kageyama's serve routine at 29:30 it has started to resemble like oikawa's serve routine when in season 1 and 2 he spins the ball before starting his serve. Kageyama is incorporating more and more elements from Oikawa after going up against him.
i know right! i was telling my brother the exact same thing the other day!! Im seeing that too!! in general Kageyamas whole progression is his style while incrporating Oikawa elements for sure
he's actually been doing this since the beginning of the anime I think, it's clear he looks up to oikawa a lot as his senior, and he learned how to jump serve from watching oikawa (since he refused to teach him) so he kinda follows a bit of his mannerisms ^^;
He's already better than Oikawa at this point. He knocked off four service aces on a better defensive team than Karasuno, sets better and learned how to elevate everyone. - Forced Tsuki to hit higher. - Forced Tanaka to angle harder. - Set Asahi perfectly to let him unleash his hardest hit. Higher quality sets, better serve, better leader. Kageyama became what Oikawa dreaded.
Yay! My favorite Inari player is coming in the next episode. He doesn’t get much screen time, even as a captain, but every time he’s on screen he makes an impact.
29:42 We need to give props to Kageyama's voice actor for that grunting sound. It sounded genuine and powerful. Such a simple thing that is often overlooked, but it's so important for conveying intensity, emotion, and many other things.
Absolutely! That's probably why watching him get this service ace in particular never gets old for me. It's the same as what Oikawa's VA does when he does his crazy serve in season 2 episode 20.
Kageyama talking about "prickly air" is likely him being at least partly in the zone and really into the game, especially given how well he's serving. Thinking back, I remember how Ukai described Kageyama being in good shape as "calm before the storm" in 2x10, which I think also parallels well with "prickly air". His serves sure struck down like lightnings here!
Another possible factor, the Japanese equivalent to “reading the room” is more accurately translating as “reading the air”. Kageyama’s “prickly air” could be a way to say that the mood on the court is tense and exciting.
It's actually just one of those phrases that's hard to translate. Kageyama says "空気がひりひりしている" which depending on how you translate it means "this atmosphere is tingly", "the air is tingly", "I can feel the tension in the air". These are all valid but from the context of the scene and the way kageyama says it, it just basically means he feels the tension but he's also excited. kind of like having goosebumps.

Hey coach, regarding the bottom text during the timeout @32:05 in the video, that was actually the announcers talking and not the teams. The announcers were basically talking about the current state of the game.
I personally think the puffy cheek animation is to help emphasize the amount of power they are putting into the hit, another way to illustrate just exactly how hard they're hitting when they release that breath
Definitly YES for re-watching, I cannot count how many times I went through the whole series and still get hyped and emotional for each episode. I practiced Kageyama’s horizontal ball spinning routine and now I mastered it, please try as well 🏐
13:43 about that scene, if I recall correctly, in the manga there was a whole situation in which Asahi just did a normal standing serve instead of his jump one since he was afraid of missing, later on, he got over it by adding this "fist-clenching" into his routine.
I interpret the “prickly air” as it feeling electric or alive. Also, if you remember the grid lines from earlier in the season, it seems that Kageyama has a really strong mental image or intuition for his whole environment. So maybe it’s another way of indicating that he is so dialed in that he can even describe exactly how the air feels. For me, when I was in a good serving rhythm, I felt a chill on my neck, right where my hairline ends.
Coach you can watch run with the wind after you finish this series, it’s anime by the same animators, has a great story and characters like haikyuu, only 24 eps…plus it’s about running track and athleticism, I think you’d enjoy it
just a little side note, but I really appreciate Haikyuu and how they depict Aran! He doesn't look like a minestrel character, he's got exaggerated features like every other character but he still looks like a human and not a caricature. he's so beautifully drawn and you can really see the care that Furudante, the author, put into designing Aran. it's the bare minimum, especially when there are Japanese born black people, but it's appreciated nonetheless.
Yo, trying to do the freak quick would be awesome for a silly video, maybe with the spiker literally closing their eyes? Also, no, this match wasn't over, the story just decided to go the Nekoma match while the Karasuno game was still going. Now that the Nekoma match is over, we're back again with Karasuno.
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial some members of Japan's national team actually did that as an experiment (not during a match of course :"D). Since now you're on season 4, you can check out the Haikyuu documentary I have on my channel (~50 minutes) if you'd like (I translated and subbed it) - gives more insight into the story and how Haikyuu influences volleyball culture in Japan. There's some national team players, school kids and coaches involved for a variety of perspectives.
@@TrianaNero I think I randomly found that video a while ago but lost the video before getting to finish, thanks for the reminder. I would avoid the channel though if not done with haikyuu manga bc other thumbnails are huge huge spoliers (Im anime only but unfortunately so much has been ruined with just thumbnails 😩)
i think the re-reactions should be more bundled, like 2 or 3 episodes at a time. we don't need to see the whole show again with you, it'll mostly be similar reactions... would be interesting to see, but i think its a bit off to use the series for thaaaat much content again
So excited for Coach to meet Kita (Inarizaki's captain) next episode. Personally, I think he has one of the best philosophies regarding volleyball and just life in general in the show and his part in the series has always been so inspiring to me. Looking forward to the next reaction!
The cheeks of the players being puffed out (whether it's realistic or not) is just a signature part of Haikyuu's art style; it's everywhere in the manga especially. It's essentially used to show when someone is concentrating or expending effort, such as the moment when they're contacting the ball or when they're jumping up to block.
What I love about Karasuno’s game plan is that not only are they chipping away at their opponent and doing just enough to throw them out of rhythm or to make uncharacteristic mistakes, but they are also actually playing to their strenghts. They are used to switching things up, making adjustments and working with what they’ve got because they have been going up against better teams and improving by doing so. Karasuno is able to stay calm, adjust and often capitalize when things are out of system or slightly out of rhythm. Of course, they play best when all the pieces fall into place, but of all the teams, they are the most resiliant and adaptable.
(My take on Coach's take on the amazing animated sequence at 10:24) 😄 The animation didn't lower in quality here and, yes the animator changed. That 1 minute and 12-second sequence was animated by one of the best animators in the industry (Takashi Mukouda). Not many productions let animators draw characters to move/look the way they want to. Nowadays, it's rare to see animators taking so much freedom and going this wild, especially in an anime like Haikyuu. He draws characters with exaggerated expressions and proportions, that's what makes his style so eye-catching and unique. If you scour through the whole season for great moving animations you'll find that more than half of the most amazing animated sequences were done by him (and the majority of those weren't liked by the coach lol). Variety is not a bad thing and every frame does not need characters to be on-model. Stretch and squash is literally one of the first things animators learn so, why can't animators apply those rules to the characters? Less detailed linework gives the animator more drawing milage to draw even more ambitious sequences. Coach stating he has some experience animating and, then him saying that this cut (14:07) is better than the previous AMAZING looking Mukouda cut is just so bizarre to me... (Not anatomically correct) =/= (bad drawings/animation) No disrespect to Coach but, it's just ridiculous to me that somebody who says that they have dabbled in animation themselves can't recognize well-animated sequences. [The Booru link (check out the comments!): www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/136758 ] Edit: Yes, the episode has some rough animations as this episode was partially outsourced (some of it had been done in-house and some of it was given to another helping studio).
the animation is really good on that. yeah its not on model. but the exaggerated expressions is really good. that Asahi face is all over the manga when someone about to spike. its really sell the anticipation.
They don't show this in the anime but, from what I recall from the manga, Asahi clenching his fist and then letting go was a way for him to relieve the " excessive power ", that way he can serve with more control
Hey coach would you also be interested in doing a haikyuu QandA after you finish season 4? maybe about correcting misconceptions haikyuu fans have about volleyball or just more specific volleyball details that the reactions didn't touch up on,or even just as questions about the show like your fav character/team/moment or what impression you had on the show before and after watching it all that kinda jazz That would be really intressting to watch! :))
13:15 what suna basically does is he leans his entire upper kind of horizontly and uses his upper core power to swing the ball with his arm. For example, if a normal hitter's body is up vertically when they spike, then sunas body is slanted because it gives him more reach and more power because he is using his upper core body to swing
I have been waiting for the next episode ever since coach got to season 4. Inarizaki's captain really seems like a character that coach will love. :) ❤️
Hey coach, I remember you was wondering about Inarizakis banner slogan in a previous episode. Just wanted to let you know that in episode 22, most of that episode relates to that. And then remember Inarizakis serving specialist, he'll be back there aswell!
I honestly thought that Haikyuu was exaggerating a bit when they talked about Rintaro's ability to control his body to manipulate blockers. Really cool to see that it's very real and for someone so experienced to talk about it. Thanks for the breakdowns!
I love your comments on how Rintaro’s technique is real and how it works, because when I watched haikyuu I thought it was like some fake anime throw in.
Yes coach, rereacts are the way to go. Watching Haikyuu after understanding everyone and their journey, it just hits differently. That's why we all love watching this story over and over again.
I'd love to see you do some of the moves they try in Haikyuu!! Would be a great way to show people how realistic the anime is and would look really awesome too!
I love how after Inarizaki's fans are booing at their pinch you can see yamaguchi and kinnoshita looking angry/upset. because even if it was a good thing for their team to get the point they know how hard it can be to be the pinch server...
I'd LOVE for you to rewatch Haikyuu. If you do decide to rewatch season 1, might I suggest watching it in the english dub, just to keep it feeling fresh. Also without the subs around you can pay more attention to the animation and quality. Also, also, the english dub is just a great time, highly recommend.
I think the puffy cheeks are a physical sign of exertion in preparation/anticipation of a heavy spike or serve, the same as when a weight lifter is holding their breath or straining visibly in their face, neck and breath control when they are pushing themselves.
I don't really see it that often in anime because I don't pay much attention like that but in sports manga's especially in baseball manga's for pitchers, I see authors make it puffy cheeks to show that they're going all out for that one moment.
I've watched a lot of Haikyuu reactions and your perspective as a coach really is interesting and different. This gives me more information about volleyball, animations, and a different perspective of Haikyuu. Thank you, Coach!
The reason they "missed" that ball compression, and they did several other times in this season, is because they're not actually drawing the ball by hand, but using a 3D asset and just squishing it for a few frames. Back in the other seasons, while most of the time the ball is indeed a 3D object they're moving across the screen, at the time of serves or powerful spikes with Oikawa or Ushiwaka, when the ball hit the floor, you could see it properly compress, with it being drawn in 2D. But due to the usual production issues they had in Season 4 pt.2, they decided to cut back on the times they drew every individual frame of that compression and used the 3D model (which they dont need to draw but can just move) for times where they would have otherwise gone 2D in other seasons. There's an even more egregious example of this in a later episode with a line shot, where the ball compresses but the wrong way around, meaning the ball hitting the floor remains a semisphere while the above half compresses down concavely. Though I dont remember if in that case it was some 3D+object warping or straight up animators not knowing how physics work or having somehow not seen the previous 3.5 seasons
Oh man, here we go. Time for Coach to meet the character I personally have been waiting for to show up next episode. He's is definitely a must have if I were to make a team!
would definitely love to see you coach make reactions again cause as per my experience, i got to love haikyuu moree after rewatching it. the depth from plot and characters is just soo wonderful.
Kageyama’s serving routine has slowly become more and more like Oikawa’s! It’s my favorite detail but no one talks about it. I also think it’s such an excellent detail because of course a first year doesn’t have a routine figured out yet and keeps mixing it up.
Question for the coach: Is the jump float technique ever used in a situation other than a serve? How successful would it be to back-set someone to hit a floater instead of a spike?
I'd think it's significantly more difficult to manage the spin of a set ball in active play. Where as in a serve toss the server has complete control over the spin of the ball they're going to hit
Jump float is only for serves. There's not enough time coming off of a set otherwise. When serving, you can take your time and as many steps as you want. Not so while the ball is already in play
Man it has been 4 seasons and I can finally point out the main reason I can't stop watching coach's Donny reaction. The breakdown of most plays of that high level with the knowledge of volleyball and the way to put it into words so natural how he teaches Also the details that he notices from animation and explanation he gives, that little extra that almost no one else has, is such a great combination
Coach I have a recommendation! You should do character analysis, it's when you observe a character about they're personality, skills, habits, strengths, weaknesses or anything about the character overall. It's overall useful and can be insightful when also observing for real life players. I think observing real life or haikyuu characters overall is great content as well. And we even dig deeper into they're decisions and actions. It's kinda like Psycho Analysis in Psychology but pretty much volleyball. And it would be also helpful for me that doesn't know how to look or observe when trying to understand another player. I would greatly appreciate if you take this into consideration!
Hey Coach! I know you've been mentioning a few times in the past that Osamu is the bigger brother but I just want you to know that Atsumu is actually the older twin!
I personally love when you rewind because you almost always have some knowledge or insight to share, that’s honestly the reason I love your reactions coach it separates you from other reactions that don’t give anything in their videos and simply sit quietly and let the episodes play through. People like you really show what a reaction video can be. I love channels that give knowledge, opinions, or even have a discussion of what they thought and their theories on what will happen next so please continue to do so I appreciate it. ✌🏽❤️
i personally dont mind if you rewind as many times as you want, coach. your commentaries on both volleyball and animation gives me an insight to the episodes i've already watched before. its why i keep coming back, after all
I would love to see you re-react to all of Haikyuu again! I really gained a lot of new insight on my second viewing of the show. Plus it'll be great to see what sort of fun stuff your editor does with your reactions to the earlier Haikyuu seasons!😁
I can’t tell you how many times it’s a struggle to do overhand passes. Especially when the ball slips through your fingers or you mis position yourself too much under the ball instead behind. Lots of mental stress when you fail your teammates on the serve receive, but when you managed to get a good up with your overhand, definitely a rewarding moment like nishinoya!! (And not breaking your fingers) Being scared to try new things makes the journey not fun at all!!
Another amazing little detail from this show, at 36:48, the libero receives a ball that was actually going out while kenma is talking about messing up their rhythm
Just a quick thought on the puffy face during the really hard hitting serve: I feel like the puffy face is similar to how you look when you really tighten up for a max strength situation. Like when you bite down, tighten the lips and air is getting pushed against the wall of your cheeks - just like that final press on max bench-press. So with that in mind, for me - the animation seems fitting. But I don't play volleyball, so I wouldn't know if it's the same for that particular setting😅 Love the reactions, Coach! 😄👍
Dose anyone else wanna see a reaction video with coach and some of his teammates ?! I think that would be so cool. All the reviews they can do together!! Man keep up the amazing content coach !!
the puffy cheeks before a hard hit/serve are likely to communicate a sort of "brace for impact" moment, since obviously you have to be conscious of clenching up other parts of your body. but keeping the air sucked into your mouth to the point that your cheeks puff up feels almost like they're almost straining to keep all of that energy locked in for that moment they make that super powerful contact with the ball. so excited for you to meet the inarizaki captain next episode!! pls feel free to take as many pauses/rewinds as you like to discuss any details that interest you, coach! hoping it's not too much hard on your editor, but it's always wonderful to hear any and all commentary you have! that's why we're all here :)
It seems like Inari is the god of harvest and the foxes are his messengers. As an argentinian i'm very proud by you praising Seba Solé. I also love this content. This, the olympics performance and a few more events encouraged me to start playing volleyball.
I noticed in sports anime judges rarely make mistakes, or if they do, it's a BIG deal. I think they want the story focused on the accomplishments of the players and not the mistakes of side characters. If a team wins, they win because they were better not because of questionable judgements from the ref. Not just in haikyuu but in other shows as well.
Let's be honest, aside from the usual reasons of wanting to see Coach Donny's interpretation and comments on the haikyuu plays, plot and animation gems that he always provides, this is just an excuse for most if not all of us to rewatch the show 😂
That was the last episode of the lower quality ones, the next coming up episodes are a hell of a ride, my personal favourites. Hope you enjoy them Coach.
Pause whenever you want, rewind whenever you want Coach. I think everyone would rather you understand/appreciate a scene after watching it a few times than a more seamless viewing 😁
the animation at 9:57 to minute 12:10 changed because the animator who did the key animation of those scenes focused more on the movement and "animated" expressions in the face, this same animator also participated in the OP of this season (where hinata goes from one side of the court to the other and then jumps, the camera going from behind hinata to the front).

Ikr idk why they didn't add it in the anime
Its his way of gauging how much force he will use right? 70,80,90% etc
@@taichiixsan4619 yeah
Man, I‘m really looking forward to his reaction to the next episode. It has one of the greatest life lessons I could‘ve ever retrieved from Haikyuu
Agreed
I interpret the “prickly air” as it feeling electric or alive. Also, if you remember the grid lines from earlier in the season, it seems that Kageyama has a really strong mental image or intuition for his whole environment. So maybe it’s another way of indicating that he is so dialed in that he can even describe exactly how the air feels. For me, when I was in a good serving rhythm, I felt a chill on my neck, right where my hairline ends.
Can’t wait for you to meet #1 probably my favorite on this team. And yes he is the captain and one of the best captains in the entire show
Next episode is probably my favorite in the series, really excited to watch your reaction to it
literally the last ball compression was just 3 episodes ago with tanaka's cross lol
maybe he was talking about the compression while touching the player's hand
Coach you can watch run with the wind after you finish this series, it’s anime by the same animators, has a great story and characters like haikyuu, only 24 eps…plus it’s about running track and athleticism, I think you’d enjoy it
I would love to watch a re-reaction, havent seen any other channel do that either, so I think its great idea!
After re-reading and rewatching Haikyuu countless times, I can convincingly say that I adore Kageyama a lot.
just a little side note, but I really appreciate Haikyuu and how they depict Aran!
I would love to see your re-reactions, Coach!! Also, rewind all you want, your comments are always really informative!
@@TrianaNero please link the video please
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial it's not a good practice, but not dangerous
@@TrianaNero I think I randomly found that video a while ago but lost the video before getting to finish, thanks for the reminder.
I would avoid the channel though if not done with haikyuu manga bc other thumbnails are huge huge spoliers (Im anime only but unfortunately so much has been ruined with just thumbnails 😩)
@@zaeya_bw You can literally fall into the net or onto the ball if you miss and your eyes are closed. That is dangerous
You can also rewind to understand what's happening. Not just for the animation
i think the re-reactions should be more bundled, like 2 or 3 episodes at a time. we don't need to see the whole show again with you, it'll mostly be similar reactions... would be interesting to see, but i think its a bit off to use the series for thaaaat much content again
(My take on Coach's take on the amazing animated sequence at 10:24) 😄
The animation didn't lower in quality here and, yes the animator changed.
(Not anatomically correct) =/= (bad drawings/animation)
No disrespect to Coach but, it's just ridiculous to me that somebody who says that they have dabbled in animation themselves can't recognize well-animated sequences.
[The Booru link (check out the comments!): www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/136758 ]
Edit: Yes, the episode has some rough animations as this episode was partially outsourced (some of it had been done in-house and some of it was given to another helping studio).
Up
this. this. this.
the animation is really good on that. yeah its not on model. but the exaggerated expressions is really good. that Asahi face is all over the manga when someone about to spike. its really sell the anticipation.
@@teee123 Exactly!
UP UP UP UP UP UP UP UP UP UP UP
They don't show this in the anime but, from what I recall from the manga, Asahi clenching his fist and then letting go was a way for him to relieve the " excessive power ", that way he can serve with more control
I’m so excited for you to watch the next episode I love their captain and his philosophy really changed the way I viewed sports and life in general.
Thanks for the breakdowns!
the no. 1 inari is a underrated player...can't wait to see next episode...💯❤
I love your comments on how Rintaro’s technique is real and how it works, because when I watched haikyuu I thought it was like some fake anime throw in.
here comes my baby kita!!! i hope you're gonna love him as much as we do, coach!!
Next episode is gonna be amazing! Coach is gonna love him!!
Finalmente! Fico esperando a semana toda por uma reação sua. Adoro o seu trabalho, treinador. Abraços de Portugal!
Absolutely Coach, id love to see your second reaction to this series, you see so much more the next time you watch it.
I didn't know Suna's torso trick was a real technique in pro volleyball. I love learning new things like this.
Oh man, here we go. Time for Coach to meet the character I personally have been waiting for to show up next episode. He's is definitely a must have if I were to make a team!
I have found myself waiting for these videos to come every week now. Thank you for the uploads
After finding the coach about a month ago, I finally finished binging the rest of the Haikyuu vids and had to actually wait for this episode!!!
"these guys are looking funny real fast". Rofl I've been waiting all season for this moment.
I'm happy that you have been rewinding scenes you want to talk about :)
would definitely love to see you coach make reactions again cause as per my experience, i got to love haikyuu moree after rewatching it. the depth from plot and characters is just soo wonderful.
No not emough time to move
I'd think it's significantly more difficult to manage the spin of a set ball in active play. Where as in a serve toss the server has complete control over the spin of the ball they're going to hit
Try it and see if it works for you or your games. If you dont see it at higher levels, there's probably a reason
Jump float is only for serves. There's not enough time coming off of a set otherwise. When serving, you can take your time and as many steps as you want. Not so while the ball is already in play
@@Destamoon of course there's a reason, that's why he's asking. Do you know the reason then? No?
Man it has been 4 seasons and I can finally point out the main reason I can't stop watching coach's Donny reaction.
The breakdown of most plays of that high level with the knowledge of volleyball and the way to put it into words so natural how he teaches
Also the details that he notices from animation and explanation he gives, that little extra that almost no one else has, is such a great combination
I am SOOOOOO excited for the next episode!!!!! You're gonna love it, coach!!!!
I cannot tell you how excited im going to be to watch your rewatching now with superb quality
This will be like my 5th time watching the entire anime
Re-watching reaction videos will be amazing! Especially now that you have the history. Great idea!!! Can't wait!!!!! YAY!
ABSOLUTELY I'd be here for the rewatch.
next episode is one of my favorites, can't wait for the reaction. Lots of thoughts to take in the next episode
i personally dont mind if you rewind as many times as you want, coach. your commentaries on both volleyball and animation gives me an insight to the episodes i've already watched before. its why i keep coming back, after all
Yes rewatch it I would watch those all over again with the info you know now haha
Kita is one of my favorite characters, I'm so excited for coach to get to know him! Great video as always.
YES YES YES!!! can't wait for the next episode introducing one of my favorite Haikyuu character LETS GOOOOOOOOO!!!
But I don't play volleyball, so I wouldn't know if it's the same for that particular setting😅
Love the reactions, Coach! 😄👍
Dose anyone else wanna see a reaction video with coach and some of his teammates ?! I think that would be so cool. All the reviews they can do together!! Man keep up the amazing content coach !!
COACHHH YESSSSS PLEASE REREACT ALL THE WAY!!!!!!! VERY IMPORTANT
Hells yeah. Rewatch please. Looking forward to it
I just went back to the first episode and was surprised that it reached 1 million view. Amazing
yess pls to rereactions! i look forward to these videos every week and love watching your reaction coach :)
the puffy cheeks before a hard hit/serve are likely to communicate a sort of "brace for impact" moment, since obviously you have to be conscious of clenching up other parts of your body. but keeping the air sucked into your mouth to the point that your cheeks puff up feels almost like they're almost straining to keep all of that energy locked in for that moment they make that super powerful contact with the ball.
so excited for you to meet the inarizaki captain next episode!! pls feel free to take as many pauses/rewinds as you like to discuss any details that interest you, coach! hoping it's not too much hard on your editor, but it's always wonderful to hear any and all commentary you have! that's why we're all here :)
10/10 would definitely watch again with you!
It seems like Inari is the god of harvest and the foxes are his messengers.
As an argentinian i'm very proud by you praising Seba Solé.
I also love this content. This, the olympics performance and a few more events encouraged me to start playing volleyball.
OMFG ITS FINALLY HAPPEND, COACH YOU ARE GONNA LOVE INARIZAKI´S CAPTAIN
HE IS SO COOL, THE BEST CHARACTER
I noticed in sports anime judges rarely make mistakes, or if they do, it's a BIG deal. I think they want the story focused on the accomplishments of the players and not the mistakes of side characters. If a team wins, they win because they were better not because of questionable judgements from the ref. Not just in haikyuu but in other shows as well.
Ohhhhhh my surprise to see video today! What a gift coach!
Let's be honest, aside from the usual reasons of wanting to see Coach Donny's interpretation and comments on the haikyuu plays, plot and animation gems that he always provides, this is just an excuse for most if not all of us to rewatch the show 😂
i was so happy to hear u would re react there is so much depth in Haikyuu it will b interesting to get your second take
When this season was airing I was so excited after this episode, to see one of my favourite characters
