Great Video. As a train driver I always blow the horn when i see enthusiasts or kids waving ect. trouble is we get told of by our managers for doing so. There are too many miserable people waiting to complain about the noise, and horn usage is monitored on the black box, so have to be careful.
A lot of driver friends of mine also say the same with the horn usage and thrashing the locos. shame really, just a bit of harmless fun .
I know like on heritage railways they use there horns/whistles and they have no restriction .

inside outside upside downside train driver is a proper job, without trains, this country would grind to a halt

Brilliant, got some absolute awesome tones there, my fave however is the 37 n steam, answering each other back, love it.

When I was on Trains I had a jammed horn which stayed on and it's somewhat embarrassing. I had to stop at next station (not scheduled) where luckily an Engineer in an orange jacket found the "short" quickly and fixed it within 15 minutes.

You would like coming to the Northeast Corridor. 150 mph, SAAHC all the time. The best engineer is whoever is on 2809, because he has given me the best hornshow twice. But if you wait an hour you get Northeast Regional 165, who never ceases to amaze. So if you are planning a vacation I really suggest New England. I also know lots of engineers, so I get railfan perks (aka cab tours).
Nice. I would love to visit America in the near future for a railway holiday. I will definitely visit the North East Corridor if I do come over :)

My dad was a loco driver after he came off steam engines always used to do this if he passed bottom of our street

Excessive use of the horn is a big no no these days and the driver can't deny it with the spy in the cab ( data recorder ).
Pre-war, the nearest things to 'spies in the cabs' were the Flaman speed recorders in the cabs of the A4s (which lived under the fireman's seat). Always surprising how many shovels 'accidentally' damaged them, however... ;-)
They should get a massive pay raise!

What's the matter with people these days complaining about train horns, it's a bit of fun at the end of the day and kids love it. I used to live next to the main London to Holyhead rail line near Rhyl in North Wales and there was a right of way crossing where enthusiasts used to gather when a steam excursion was due and the drivers to warn of their approach gave a little medley on the horn which everybody enjoyed. I used to train spot as a child in the steam age which was great, I still go to Llangollen occasionally to ride a team train with my friends who are like me, it's a great day out and there are pensioner discounts available.
I need to go and find my self some east coast/ VTEC train drivers they love there horns don't they ;) i find the class 67 drivers to be all ways happy to have that train horn :) last time i seen one they all most blew Bristol temple meads up with them ;)

What is it with east coast drivers and hst horns? GWR and AXC are ignorant down in the South West
Kian Corrie same with east coast. Too many complaints of idiots who don’t like beautiful sounds. I could go to bed with a dvt mk4 holding a high tone blare

Why are train operating companies so bothered about a tone or two for fun? It's not as if they're going to become bankrupt from running a compressor! Or as if it damages the environment. I don't see why officials are so strict nowadays...

you do realise that east coast as a company doesn't exist anymore right? LNER now operate the east coast mainline. You'll still find HSTs

Think east coast drivers are the best! Shame signallers don't appreciate it! Particularly love dvt horns.

What a sad country this has become where train drivers are chastised for being friendly, all because they may get complaints. Cab monitors and all that. Unbelievable. When I was young a wave and a whistle was commonplace. These so called complainers should spend some time in the U.S where the drivers (engineers) hardly take their hand of the button. Keep on hooting lads, sod em all.
