    After posting my question I went to my shop and tried cutting with my SS,you are absolutely right about having to cut both ways, although in my case (being left handed or just a habit)I always start the initial turn clockwise.,thank you for your reply.

      Yes, many people favor one direction or another. But ultimately, you do need to go in both. No getting around it! :D

    Wow . . amazing . . I've just borrowed my brother's Scroll-saw, and seeing how easy you make that look has inspired me to try some intricate work . . just practising getting tight turns like you did, and trying to stay relaxed while doing it, using some waste pieces of timber first.

    Hi! It is nice to meet you. I am also happy to see another woman so scroll saws. I am happy you are thinking about choosing an Excalibur. I find it the best saw on the market. I had a DeWalt prior to buying this saw, but it was the older, Type 1 version that is no longer available. The Type 2's are made much cheaper and weigh 13 lbs less than the Type 1's did. There are lots of problems with them.

    Hi, George: I use Olson scroll saw blades. The most common sizes that I use for the type of work I do are the 2/0 Reverse, 2 Reverse, Mach blades in size 3 and Mach blades in size 5. Those pretty much cover the type of things that I cut on the saw. :)

    I learn something new from each of your vids. Thanks for posting!

    Since the blades are really tiny, there is very little dust. If you use a larger blade or thicker stock, the kerf is wider and more material is being removed from the piece. Therefore - more dust. Much of what I cut is pretty intricate and I generally use very small blades (2/0, 2, 3 and sometimes 5's) Dust is really minimum when doing scroll work of this type. :)

    Hi its so nice to see another woman with a scroll saw, here in the uk there is not a big scroll saw community. As a woman its nice to see you using the saw so proficiently. I want so much to get into this hobby, however im not sure if i should buy the excalibur ex or the new compact size ex 16. What do you think.

    nice, watching how easy it is to release the blade on yours i think i might have to upgrade from my craftmans 16" variable speed some time in the future

    oh i forgot to ask why you chose the excalibur over the dewalt as i know in canada you have access to the dewalt unlike me in the uk where we cant get hold of dewalt scroll saws.
    thanks you so much in advance

    Part 2 - I think the 16 Excalibur is fine if you do smaller projects. I don't like big projects and I could probably have easily gotten along with it. But I figured that if there were a call for me to do something larger, I would get the mid-size saw just in case. If you have any questions regarding the saw, please feel free to email me at sheilalandrydesign@gmail.com and I will be able to answer your questions fully. I think you will be happy with your choice and will have a great time.

    Hi Sheila,it,s ken from ontario,I was wondering why do you cut clockwise?I do this myself and the reason for me is,I'm left handed.
    Thanks.

    • @SheilaLandry
      @SheilaLandry  10 років тому

      Hi, Ken:
      I cut both ways. You have to with scroll sawing. Most scrolled designs require that you cut clockwise AND counter clockwise in the same designs (like when cutting the perimeter of the letter "s" for example) You just have to learn to do both. :)

    Hi Trevor. I am glad the video helped you. I have several that you may want to look in on that cover lots of basics and some harder things too. I hosted an online class at Lumberjocks which is a great woodworking site and it has tutorials, diagrams and even some practice patterns that you can download. You may want to check it out (link in description). You can email me at sheilalandrydesigns@gmail.com if you have any questions and I will do my best to help. Thanks for the comment!

    What spiral scroll saw blade number would you use on half inch thick pine?

    • @SheilaLandry
      @SheilaLandry  6 років тому

      Hi, Adelina. I am not much of a fan of spiral blades, as I feel they chew the wood up a lot and leave a wide kerf line that doesn't work well with many of my designs. However, I know many really like them. I don't feel qualified to recommend a blade to you because I don't have much experience with them. Maybe one of the other viewers here will offer their opinion? Thanks so much! Sheila

    Hi Sheila, I'm just about to buy a 16 inch...when they come back in stock:) Have you tried the spiral blades that let you go any direction. What about the sanding scrolls?

    • @SheilaLandry
      @SheilaLandry  8 років тому

      +Nothing Here For You I am not a fan of spiral blades. They do have their purpose when you need to cut longer pieces, but I feel that they leave the edges too 'ragged'. I suppose it depends on what you are making. The kerf is also larger due to the teeth being in all directions. Many use them for portrait style scrolling, but I don't do that so I don't use them at all really. But my advice is to give them a try if you think you will like them. Everyone is different. :) The sanding scrolls won't be necessary if you have a decent saw. I have the DeWalt and the Excalibur and both leave the edges very smooth. If you are sanding other things, you may want to keep a pack on hand, as they could come in handy for some things. I have a pack that I have had for years and never used them yet. ;) But they are good to have. :)

    What is the blue tape for? Do you have the paternity on top of the tape? thanks

    • @SheilaLandry
      @SheilaLandry  8 років тому +1

      The blue tape is placed on the wood before the pattern to help facilitate easy removal of the pattern after cutting. Also, the adhesive in the tape helps lubricate the scroll saw blade so it runs cooler and it will not leave burn marks on the wood. :)

    Hi Sheila what is the difference between the 21" and the 16"?

    • @SheilaLandry
      @SheilaLandry  10 років тому

      Hi, Mario: Not much at all. I almost got the 16" saw because I don't really like doing larger pieces. The 16" throat is certainly deep enough to cut just about anything that I cut. I just thought that getting the mid-size 21" saw would be good because it wasn't that much more expensive than the 16" saw and sometimes I use it to cut larger pieces of wood to a manageable size. I could have certainly got away with the 16" scroll saw. They both preform equally well, I think. :)

      +Isaac Juarez I think most Woodcraft stores have them. I am living in Nova Scotia now and got mine from Ray at Seyco (seyco.com/) He is the known 'expert' on the saw. He not only sells them but fine tunes each of the saws that leave his place before sending them out. His customer service is exceptional and even though I live here in Nova Scotia, I find that he is very helpful when any issues or questions arise. I highly recommend getting the saw from him. We also have articles on our site with adjusting and using the saw. I hope you check them out www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/free-pattern

      Adnan Ansari I had got mine from the USA about 7 years ago and it was about $900 USD if I remember correctly.
      I don't think they are even sold in the USA anymore. I would suggest going online to locate someone near you who may have them. :)
