  • Fight scenes in movies and TV shows are more realistic than ever. The art of fight choreography has evolved significantly since the era of Bruce Lee. To find out how these scenes come together, we interviewed Anthony Vincent, a top stunt coordinator and performer. He demonstrated some of the fundamentals of how to make a fight scene look real.

If you look at a lot of 80's Hong Kong action scenes then you'll realise that a lot of stuntmen took a lot of real hits. This is because they didn't make very much money so most of their income came from being paid 'extra' in order to take real, full-force hits from people like Bruce Lee.

personally, check out most of Donnie Yen's movies (SPL: Kill Zone, Flash Point, Raging Fire). The thing that is most amusing is that the ASP baton vs. Tanto knife fight scene in SPL: Kill Zone is actually mostly improv, imagine how cool that is. rumour goes as well that they turned it into a competition to see who would get more hits on the other to add more realism to it.

Tony Vincent made me lose consciousness with my own gi in 2000 during a Judo/BJJ class. It was accidental and since I was facing away from him and being stubborn trying to escape, he had no way to know that I wasn’t still resisting when I started to spasm and convulse. Luckily our mutual friend, Bill Carter, saw what was happening and told Tony to release the hold. I have about 10-15 seconds of lost time and was on my way out for at least 10 seconds before he cinched it tighter with a knee in my back. I peed my pant at some point and woke up with my body still chest and arms spasming with my arms stuck wide and feeling very confused. Tony was a apologizing (unnecessarily, I should have tapped out with my foot) and I remember asking him while still in a daze “Did I get pee on you?” . Great guy and training partner.

I wonder if his father told him how many times he went to the can? I've watched The Sopranos all the way through more than 10 times, but I swear for the life of me he never mentions how many times.. he's very humble and secretive about that..

Or in wrestling, in nano second, the clenched fist turns to an open hand strike. It produces sound that makes audience perceived the thrown punched is really hard. Then, there are times the offhand slaps a part of the body on the same sequenced as the thrown punch to produce the same sound effect. The offhand can be done by either the puncher or the receiver.
